GREATER TORONTO EDITION, MAY 2021

How remote workers can separate work life from family life Working remotely from home or another location has become the norm for many professionals. The ability to set one’s own hours and avoid lengthy commutes can be quite a boon to productivity. Business owners also may find they can reduce overhead costs by not keeping a static office location.

Finding the balance between work and home life when your home is your place of employment can be tricky. But practice makes perfect. Those who work exclusively from home may find it challenging to separate their work from family life and vice versa. While there is bound to be some overlap, the following strategies can help remote workers deftly manage their responsibilities to their employers and their families.

ESTABLISH A CLEAR-CUT WORKSPACE Working at the dining room table or in the bedroom may seem convenient, but these places are full of distractions, whether workers realize that or not. Plus, they may cause the mind to wander, as they’re usually associated with other tasks, like eating or lounging. Creating a specific work-only area is a great way to stay on target and maintain focus.

BUILD IN BREAK TIMES Treat working at home as you would working in an office. Schedule breaks to get up and run errands, eat lunch away from your desk, take a breather to soak up some sunlight, or engage in a brief conversation with a friend.

TURN A BLIND EYE TO DISTRACTIONS Is the laundry piling up? Does the dog need a walk? What about that grocery list? Home life distractions and needs can

slowly creep into your work realm if you let them. If you’re meant to be putting in hours, resist the urge to do household chores. Instead, wait for break times to handle such tasks. Remember, if you wouldn’t be doing it in an office setting, you shouldn’t be doing it while working remotely.

MAINTAIN A CONSISTENT SCHEDULE

pick up a sick child sick from school. But it’s easier to get into work mode and then disengage from work mode if you have a relatively consistent schedule. A schedule also makes it easier for coworkers and clients to know when they can get in touch with you – and when it’s family time. Finding the balance between work and home life when your home is your place of employment can be tricky. But practice makes perfect. ●

How to avoid this common workplace injury Eye injuries in the workplace are more common than we think and can happen in any type of environment. From flying objects to chemicals, tools, particles and even ultraviolet rays, everyone is at risk of suffering an eye injury on the job.

When possible, eliminate any obvious hazards surrounding you before beginning work. Every day, almost 700 Canadians develop an eye injury while at work. As such, it is important that workers in every environment pay attention to their surroundings and take action to prevent injury.

Eye injuries at the workplace can happen fast, and, most of the time, they can be prevented. To help reduce the number of workplace eye injuries, the Canadian Ophthalmological Society recommends these tips: Always wear protective eyewear: Depending on the type of environment you work in, adapting your level of eye protection to your surroundings is key. Experts suggest wearing glasses or goggles that protect the front and sides of your face. Even if you’re just passing through areas that pose eye hazards, protective eyewear is encouraged. Eliminate obvious hazards: When possible, eliminate any obvious hazards sur-

rounding you before beginning work. You can consider adding machine guarding, work screens or other engineering controls, particularly for construction projects. Make yourself known: Ensure those working around you are aware when you are present and within their range of motion so that you don’t come into contact with each other and can help avoid accidents or injuries. If you suspect that you or a coworker has suffered an eye injury, it is important that you do not attempt to treat it yourself, but immediately seek medical help from a local hospital or ophthalmologist. ● News Canada

CAREER TRAINING

GREATER TORONTO EDITION, MAY 2021

How to handle the ‘change’ in career change Right now, I’m surrounded by change. Several friends are moving away or having babies. My parents are downsizing from my cherished childhood home. A wonderful elderly relative has died. An adorable lost kitten has charmed his way into our hearts and our household. I’m congratulating several clever courageous clients who are starting new roles having completed our sessions over recent months.

Career change is a prime source of fear and uncertainty. It’s hard to let go, and even harder to trust that what’s coming next won’t bring you unstuck. A focus on changing autumn leaves at the heart of a weekend yoga retreat got me thinking about the impermanence of everything. Ok so it probably wasn’t ideal to be thinking so much as I moved between Downward Dog and Warrior One. However I caught myself meditating on changes of all kinds-the big scary ones like leaving

REFRAME A FALL Finally, I’m a fan of author Susan Jeffers’s timeless advice in ‘Feel the fear and do it anyway’. Essentially, every decision we make is an opportunity to grow and learn. CONSIDER DESIGN Design your résumé so it will look good whether it’s viewed on a screen or a mobile phone or printed on paper. BE BRIEF YET EFFECTIVE A concise design is key. According to data from the 12th annual Mystery Job Candidate survey by CareerXRoads, the average recruiter spends six seconds looking at a résumé. If a résumé is lengthy or doesn’t attract attention, it will likely be ignored. Stick to a single-page and make sure wording is brief but meaty.
