Hello, my name is Nestor L. Arce, CPA; this is my second term as the President of the Suburban Essex Chamber of Commerce. We support the Townshipâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s of Bloomfield and Belleville, and the Borough of Glen Ridge. In my last message, more than three years ago, I stated that this economy presented opportunities for the creation of new businesses. In my CPA practice, I have been witness to that fact. More and more entrepreneurs are coming to me for assistance in helping them startup their businesses. Even though the economy is bouncing back, as of this writing, unemployment benefits have not been extended. This is yet another incentive for starting your own business! In the beginning, all entrepreneurs have to overcome the fear of failure, when going out on their own. They have many unanswered questions. Such as: How do I start my business and where do I start my business? As a sole-practitioner, I also had this fear and questions. The place to start is with your local Chamber of Commerce, where you can network with other business owners who have been there and done that. The chamber provides you with valuable contacts and resources not found anywhere else. I have been honored to rub shoulders with many influential persons in our community (both politicians and business owners). My business has benefited immeasurably from these encounters. We recently ran a three month promotion, where new members (for a limited amount of time) were allowed to join at a discounted rate. That promotion went well with several new members seeing the value of The Suburban Essex Chamber of Commerce membership. Of special note: In the last year, our chamber has started a Scholarship Foundation, which will provide scholarships to three worthy students within our jurisdiction. So as you see, we give back to the community!

From the Chamber Office The Suburban Essex Chamber of Commerce “chamber” is celebrating its 97th year in operation. We are a New Jersey non profit organization which represents and promotes local businesses. The chamber’s future goal is to grow through membership and in the services that we are able to provide to the business community. The chamber's members include many professional practices, service and retail businesses, civic organizations and patron members. I do not have to tell you what members mean to any organization. They keep the doors open and help the organization grow. The Spotlight Directory is an annual community information and resource guide. It contains local township emergency contact information for administrative offices, schools and government elected officials in each of the towns that we represent. The directory also provides a complete listing of all our members along with announcements, events and programs that we provide throughout the year. It is important that you patronize our local businesses to help our community prosper. Monthly board meetings and networking events encourage members to connect with one another to develop relationships and share ideas that stimulate growth opportunities within our local community. The chamber has recently incorporated a 501 (c)(3) tax deductible organization under the name of the Suburban Essex Chamber of Commerce Foundation, Inc. The foundation is solely for the purpose of providing scholarships for graduating high school seniors that reside in Bloomfield, Belleville and Glen Ridge. The service will be provided to make it easier for those seniors who have no means of transporting themselves to necessary doctor and dentist appointments. While medical appointments are given priority scheduling, the senior citizens, along with our handicapped population, are eligible for this service for other necessary transportation needs. Those needs could include a trip to the cemetery, the library, a nursing home or hospital to visit a sick friend or relative or any of a number of other destinations in Essex County. •Open to all Bloomfield residents' ages 60 and older or person with disabilities. •All requests must be made at least 2 weeks prior to your scheduled appointment. • First come first serve basis.

TOWNSHIP OF BELLEVILLE CELEBRATES ITS 175TH ANNIVERSARY

2014 marks the 175th anniversary of Belleville as a municipality and the 100th anniversary of the construction of its Town Hall. On April 8, 1839, Belleville became an independent township by an act of the New Jersey state legislature. Separating from Bloomfield Township, Belleville at that time included Nutley and Woodside, about 1/3 of the area that had been Bloomfield.

Settled in the late 1600’s by the Dutch and English, Belleville was part of the original Newark land grant. The area took its first step toward municipal independence in 1743. At that time, it was agreed that the territory called Second River would administer poor laws, fines and assessments separately from Newark. Then in 1797, the inhabitants “near the bridge” signed a resolution naming their village “Belleville”. With ready water power and river transportation, trade and industry in the settlement grew rapidly. Various mills sprang up along the water and shipbuilding was an important industry. Entrepreneurs of Belleville pioneered steam power and manufactured copper wire for the telegraph. Belleville played a prominent role in the industrial development of America. The cornerstone of Belleville’s Town Hall at 152 Washington Avenue was placed on July 19, 1913. By Dec. 30, 1914 the Town Council was able to meet in the new building. Several additions and major renovations have taken place in the 100 years since, but the building remains a prominent symbol of the municipality.

The Suburban Essex Chamber of Commerce Foundation held its first scholarship awards luncheon on June 19, 2013 at the Forest Hill Field Club in Bloomfield. Recipients of scholarships must be graduating seniors who reside in Bloomfield, Belleville and Glen Ridge with plans to attend a college in the fall to further their education in business.
