■ Heidelberg West have entered the top four of the NFNL Division 3 ladder after coming from behind at half time to defeat Old Eltham Collegians by the narrowest of margins at Eltham College.

The form lines of both sides coming into this match suggested that it might be a close encounter and it lived up to those expectations, with the Hawks turning a 14-point half time deficit into a 8.11 (59) to 9.4 (58) triumph.

Both teams now sit on seven wins and while the Turtles have the superior percentage, Heidelberg West move into fourth spot on the ladder because of their game in hand. They have now defeated Old Eltham Collegians for the fifth consecutive time.

“It was a grinding win but a special effort,” Heidelberg West coach Michael Missen said.

“The boys gave 100 per cent effort and there were no passengers.”

Despite the close final margin, both teams had periods of significant dominance at various stages of the contest.

Matthew Sleeman’s men looked to be in total control midway through the second term. Matthew Williamson had just kicked his fourth goal of the afternoon and when Jake Tyson snapped truly soon after, the home team led by a game-high 23-points.

Sebastian Francis-Perkins was getting his hands on the ball and using it well in the midfield while midfielder Nick Snowdon also impressed and hit the scoreboard.

From that moment on however, the Hawks gradually worked their way back into the match. They had all the play just before the main break but failed to make the most of their control of the game and scored 1.3 to reduce the half time deficit to a manageable 14 points.

The visitors had a goal on the board within two minutes of the second half when Nicholas Paton received a handball for an easy goal.

Dane Dmitrovic then showed a lot of poise when receiving the ball 60 metres out. Instead of blazing away or attempting a pass to the forwards who were covered, he ran his full measure and slammed the ball through for a major.

A Matt Reinke snap late in the quarter put the Hawks in front at the last change, and with the visitors firing on all cylinders, the Turtles were kept goalless for the quarter.

Heidelberg West coach Michael Missen urged his team on at the three quarter time break, noting that his team was working harder.

He had praise for Michael Adams who had moved onto Williamson in the mid stages of the game and kept the tall forward in check.

The last term was a tense struggle. Nicholas Milne out bodied his opponent to take a mark close in on a tight angle early in the quarter and curled the ball home to grab back the lead for his team.

But it didn’t last long as the Hawks cleared the ball from the next centre bounce. Louis Hill was very industrious on the day and was involved in the chain of disposals which led to Alex Hywood marking close in and goaling.

Hywood was to be the only multiple goalscorer for the away side on the day and his second regained the lead.

With Lachlan Evans getting on top in the ruck and their top line players in Daniel Kelly, Marcus Hill and Bradley Moore winning crucial battles around the ground, the Hawks attacked relentlessly for most of the term.

But they could only manage four behinds in that time in what was a period where moving the ball fluently was difficult.

Then, against the run of play, Milne snapped a wonderful goal from deep in the pocket for his third of the day. It put Old Eltham Collegians in front by a point with little time left.

Soon after, Heidelberg West’s Louis Hill won a free for a great tackle and hit Billy Wright in space 45 metres out on an angle. Wright’s slightly errant shot was enough to tie the scores.

The Hawks surged again and managed to rush a behind to hit the lead with seconds remaining. A risky kick-out from the behind by the Turtles came unstuck and resulted in the ball going back to the Heidelberg West goal square as the siren sounded.

Daniel Hallett was again impressive in a Turtles defence that was under siege for the latter part of the contest.

Benjamin Cox was his usual productive self on the wing, but his teammate Niall McDonough had a rough day, suffering injuries in the first and final term of the contest.

Bulls claim enormous triumph

■ Bundoora have made a massive statement in the NFNL Division 1 competition, after defeating Montmorency by 39 points in impressive fashion at Yulong Reserve

It was a tale of effort versus execution from two of the league’s best sides. The Magpies had the better end of the possession difference, while the Bulls controlled the tempo more often and were able to link up their midfield and forward line seamlessly on many occasions.

It allowed Bundoora to form a 9.16 (70) to 4.7 (31) victory in front of their home fans.

The third placed Bulls are now just one game behind the second placed Magpies but more importantly, are now eight points clear of Greensborough in sixth spot.

Meanwhile Montmorency’s 10-game unbeaten streak has come to an end and are a now game and a half behind top of the table Heidelberg.

Bundoora star Sam Lloyd was the man of the moment throughout, snapping six majors in blistering fashion to swing the momentum all the way toward his side.

While in the midfield, the pairing of Ben McNiece and Luke Collins poised many problems for the opposition, continously charging out from one of Hamish Shepheard’s many ruck contests wins, only helping to enforce the big man’s stellar game around the ground.

For the Magpies, Ben Paterson was a consistent spark on the field with his accurate kicking, while Connor Kane played numerous positions excellently around the ground that gave his side much needed dynamic.

Other key contributions came from the likes of Joshua Mills, Liam McMahon and Patrick Fitzgerald, who helped win the majority of possessions for the Magpies, but without their star ruckman in Liam Wale-Buxton , the visitors struggled to control the key areas of the game that saw them draw with Heidelberg last week.

The standard for scoring was set early in the match by Lloyd, who managed to snag two majors from set shot distance in the opening 10 minutes of the game.

But the Magpies were able to respond quickly with a chain of kicks that fell into the hands of Patrick Fitzgerald, who thumped the shot on goal from 40-metres out to reduce the margin to within a goal.

With minutes remaining in a quarter where the two sides looked about even, Lloyd would come charging down the forward line to snatch his third of the term and give the Bulls an 11point lead at the break.

Ryan Sturgess placed more heat on the scoreboard, by opening the second quarter with a thunderous snap around the body to push the lead further for the Bulls.

Lloyd then continued his stellar form by snapping from the boundary for a goal, followed by being the beneficiary of another one by sneaking out the pack and slotting the ball through the big sticks.

With the Bulls lead stretched out to 29 points, Neville Jetta helped make sure it would stay that way by dominating the term and disrupting the Magpies attack that set his side’s control of the ball well.

The quarter ending in the same fashion as the one prior, with Lloyd finding the ball right in front of the goal square to snap his sixth of the first half.

Heading into the second half, the Bulls ability to find targets inside-50 went untouched as Sturgess kicked true for a goal that signalled the biggest lead of the game at 47 points.

However, Jono Manzoney’s men weren’t giving up anytime soon with a whole half left to play and found the start of the momentum shift they needed thanks to a goal from Liam McMahon.

The Magpie flock followed with more majors coming from the league’s leading goal-scorer in Fitzgerald, who kicked two majors that reduced the lead to 30-points.

But it was the Bulls who had the last say of the term, with a set shot conversion from Jedd Longmire halting any panic from the home crowd.

With a comfortable lead of 35 points heading into the last term, Bundoora were happy to let the final term play out.

Both sides were locked in standstill with neither one separating themselves from the other in a match that was now played under wet conditions.

It would be reflected on the scoreboard in a goalless quarter for both teams, allowing the Bulls to maintain their lead and hold on for a 39point victory.

Local Sport Saints catapult into top five

■ Watsonia responded to their heavy defeat last week and have now entered the top five in NFNL Division 2 after claiming a 29-point win over Thomastown at Binnak Park.

After kicking one goal to nil in the opening term, the hosts kicked four goals to three in each of the remaining three quarters to secure an incredibly important 13.14 (92) to 9.9 (63) triumph.

This was a crucial performance from Watsonia as losses from the Bears as well as Northcote Park and Panton Hill in Round 13 see the Saints rise into fifth position on percentage, while Thomastown move to seventh, but only two points shy of the top five.

James Lucente kicked four brilliant goals for Watsonia to maintain his handy lead in the competition goalkicking tally, while Corey Potter slotted two majors and worked hard around the ground.

For the visitors, it was Masaki Miki who proved valiant in his sides defeat, accumulating many possessions in the middle alongside Lawrence Lopiccolo.

Three majors from Todd Hughes kept the scoreboard ticking, he has now kicked eight majors in his three senior games in 2023.

Both teams struggled to maintain possession from the first bounce in the overcast but still conditions.

Finals race far from over

■ The finals race is far from over throughout all three competitions following some important results during last weekend’s action in the NFNL senior women’s football competition.

Division 1

Montmorency 1 hosted Eltham under Friday night lights, with the Magpies run continuing after a 22-point victory at Montmorency Park North Oval. The Magpies only led by eight points at three quarter time, before a two goal to nil final term secured the 6.5 (41) to 2.7 (19) triumph. It was Madeline Gallagher-Beanland who stood out for the hosts in a dominant display, also finishing with a major. Abbey Ward and Shelby Coall produced great game too for Montmorency while Jacki White was named as Eltham’s best.

Darebin 1 and Banyule’s contest was decided in the final term, with the visitors winning by 10 points at A.H. Capp Reserve. Scores were locked at 1.3 (9) apiece heading into a huge final term, before both sides registered the same scoring shots, however it was the Bears who were more accurate, holding on to win 3.7 (25) to 1.9 (15). Annabel Goodison had her best performance in what has been a brilliant couple of months, now being named in her side’s best in six consecutive matches. Olivia Perillo also impressed while Karmen Wong was outstanding for the Falcons in the tight loss.

Division 2

Diamond Creek Women’s 1 moved one step closer to snatching fourth spot on the ladder after a comfortable 63-point triumph over West Preston-Lakeside 1 at J.E. Moore Park. A sixgoal to one first half set up the 14.9 (63) to 4.6 (30) win and has seen the Creekers jump into the top four on percentage with just three games remaining in the home and away season. Linda Thorp kicked five majors in another terrific game, while Maykaylah Appleby led her side brilliantly with three majors. Chiara Fitzgerald made it back-to-back weeks as the Roosters’ best.

St Mary’s further stamped their authority on the competition on Friday night, after a 170-point victory over bottom placed Hurstbridge at Whatmough Park. The Bridges were kept scoreless in the 26.14 (170) to 0.0 (0) win, putting the Burra in the hot seat to claim the minor premiership. The two standouts throughout the night were Megan Girolami, who produced seven majors, and Jessica Hardy, whose talent was on show throughout the match. Natarsha Harrop rallied hard for the Bridges despite the loss.

The Fitzroy Stars pulled away from Mernda in the second half to claim an important 29-point

triumph at Sir Douglas Nicholls Oval. Heidelberg’s push for top spot remains intact after defeating Whittlesea by 42 points at the Whittlesea Showgrounds. A huge five-goal to one first half was the base of the 7.6 (48) to 1.0 (6) result, which is now the Tigers fifth consecutive victory in the competition. Mia Tascone was excellent as was Emily De Sando with the duo dominating the midfield. Paige Thompson and Emma Rowe kicked two majors apiece for the visitors, while Tiana Markey was a standout for the Eagles and was her side’s only goalkicker for the afternoon.

Division 3

North Heidelberg are keeping their slim finals hopes alive after a 31-point win over West Preston-Lakeside 2 at J.E. Moore Park. The Bulldogs third triumph of the season came after an impressive six goal to one second half, which saw them secure a 7.5 (47) to 2.4 (16) result and go one game behind fifth placed Diamond Creek Women’s 2. Mikayla Clarkson had a great afternoon and has now been named in her Bulldogs’ best eight times in 11 games in 2023. Nikita Scott and Amy Pullar kicked two goals each for the visitors while Sara Santoro’s efforts didn’t go unnoticed for the Roosters Heidelberg West have locked in a double chance spot in their inaugural season of the women’s competition after defeating Darebin 2 by 51 points by 51 points at Heidelberg Park.

The Hawks registered 18 scoring shots to two in the 8.10 (58) to 1.1 (7) win, and now extend their gap from the Falcons to 16 points with two matches remaining. Chloe Rowan kicked three goals in a best on ground performance with Molly Reinke also excellent. Alfe Larkin and Cambel Rowland did their best for the Falcons Montmorency 2 came from behind at half time to claim an important 15-point victory over Diamond Creek Women’s 2 at Montmorency Park North Oval. The Magpies trailed by seven points at half time before keeping the Creekers scoreless and kicking three majors themselves in the second half to prevail 4.5 (29) to 2.2 (14).

Sian Capito kicked two majors for the hosts, now taking her tally to 14 majors, while teammate Josephine Akuei performed well. Jessica Thompson kicked both of the visitors’ goals with Bentley Butler being named as the side’s best.

Wallan have gone 12 straight games without a loss after proving too good for Laurimar at Laurimar Reserve, winning by 63 points. The Power were kept scoreless until the final term, while the Magpies dominated throughout to win 10.5 (65) to 0.2 (2).

- NFNL

To both teams’ credit, the play was relatively open, but the tackling was fierce with high pressure being applied by defenders at either end of the ground, and with the two sides looking to break into the top five, it appeared that both coaches were determined to win with busy interchanges and plenty of on field adjustments.

The only major of the term came from James Lucente 10 minutes in when he was the benefactory of a free kick off the ball.

His teammate Julian Janev was prominent early, igniting many transitions from half back into their forward 50.

While both sides had scoring opportunities during the quarter, hurried play caused by the defensive pressure at both ends made it difficult to score goals.

Thomastown seemingly had enough of the lack of goals and were quick to hit the scoreboard in the second term as Todd Hughes snapped across his body within the first minute of the quarter.

Possession was shared evenly between the two teams for the next ten minutes, however Corey Potter drifted forward to take a great contested mark, before kicking truly to score Watsonia’s second of the game.

Kobe Van Zwienen was busy in the middle for the Saints, providing great run and carry as well as an ability to lower the eyes to spot up his teammates.

One of those teammates was Kristian Lawson who slotted a major to add to an already healthy score line for the hosts.

The Bears were able to respond by kicking the next two goals of the match to keep them within reach as they entered the main change 17 points down.

As they did in the second quarter, Thomastown came out hot in the third term.

Majors from Anthony Capeci and Ross Hatzis within the first five minutes brought the deficit to within a goal.

But Watsonia were able to hit back via Lucente again, as he kicked his third of the afternoon from the set shot. Adrian Alfonsi joined the party by finding the big sticks to push the margin back to beyond two goals.

Their lead was again extended through Blake Charles as he crumbed the ball from his own marking contest and snapped it across his body to float through another major.

Lucente then put his stamp on the quarter as he was set up by a lovely kick from Janev to simply convert his fourth goal.

The margin was 21 points at three quarter time, with the hosts flurry of majors late putting them in control heading into the final change.

Again, the last quarter started with back-toback Bears majors, as Hughes and Shannon Ball helped bring the margin back to nine points.

But as they had done all afternoon, the Saints had the answers just as Peter Bugden’s men looked to build some momentum.

They kicked four of the next five majors to round out a deserving 29-point victory and keep their finals tilt intact.
