■ The Liberal Party continued to lose its grip on Eastern Suburbs politics at this year’s State Election held on November 26. Jackson Taylor (ALP) retained the redistributed seat of Bayswater, knocking out Nick Wakeling (Lib.) who had held the Ferntree Gully seat. On a two party preferred basis, and whilst votes are bneing re-counted, Mr Jackson had 23,028 votes (54.11 perf cent) against Mr Wakeling on 19,528 (45.89 per cent). In Ashwood, Matt Fregon (ALP) on 25,012 votes (56.39 per cent) bettered Asher Judah (Lib.) on 19,340 votes (43.61 per cent). At Box Hill, incumbent Paul Hamer (ALP) held the seat with 25,087 votes (56.77 per cent) against Nicole Ta-Ei Werner (Lib.) on 19,106 (43.23 per cent). The Bulleen contest saw State Opposition Leader Matthew Guy (Lib.) win 23,632 votes (56.05 per cent) against Ian Rogers (ALP) on 18,533 votes (43.95 per cent). There is already speculation that Mr Guy may step aside from the seat to make way for Upper House Liberal Matt Bach who may have leadership ambition. The Croydon seat was retained by David Hodgett (Lib.) on 23,301 votes (51.31 per cent) against Sorina Grasso (ALP) on 22.114 votes (48.69 per cent).
● Jackson Taylor, Bayswater MLA Bridget Vallence (Lib.) held on to the Evelyn seat with 24,017 (55.24 per cent) against Lorna Dent (ALP) on 19,458 votes (44.76 per cent). Neil Angus, the former MLA for ForestHill, lost his bid for Glen Waverley, winning 20,804 votes (46.75 per cent) to John Mullahy (ALP) who secured 23,701 votes (53.25 per cent). Although Melissa Lowe (Ind.) received indications of victory of the seat of Hawthorn from p;undits on election night, with 21,232 votes (48.56 per cent), it appears that it has been won by John Pesutto (Lib.) with 22,487 votes (51.44 per cent). Kew, once held by Tim Smith (Lib.), went to Jess Wilson (Lib.) with 23,342 votes (53.72 per cent) after polling
night hopes were on a high for Sophie Torney on 20,113 votes (46.28 per cent). Monbulk, previously held by retiring Deputy Premier James Merlino (ALP) went his colleague Daniela De Martino on 24,009 votes (57.56 per cent) against opponent Gareth Ward (Lib.) on 17,699 votes (42.44 per cent). Premier Daniel Andrews was one of 14 candidates for Mulgrave, winning with 22,834 votes (60.16 per cent), against Michael Piastrino on 15,123 votes (39.84 per cent). Independent Ian Cook had won 6810 first preference votes (18.03 per cent). Will Fowles (ALP) was successul in his bid to transfer from Burwood to Ringwood, with 26,460 votes (58.34 per cent), against Cynthia Watson (Lib.) on 18,892 votes (41.66 per cent). Watson is a Councillor at Boronndara. Liberal veteran Kim Wells secured the Rowville seat with 23,272 votes (53.73 per cent) against Mannie Kaur Verma (ALP) on 20,042 votes (46.27 per cent). Ryan Smith took the Warrandyte seat after winning 24,321 votes (54.14 per cent) against Naomi Oakley (ALP) on 20,598 votes (45.86 per cent). For several days, Mr Smith flirted with the idea of putting his hand up for the State Liberal leadership. Upper House seats are still being counted.

With trains running by 2035, SRL East will open up access to key education, health and employment centres in Melbourne’s east and south east, relieving pressure on roads and slashing congestion and travel times across the network, as well as supporting up to 24,000 local jobs in the construction phase. “Those jobs were on the ballot paper on Saturday and Victorians overwhelmingly voted for ongoing investment in the transport infrastructure the state needs,” said a State Government representative last week. “SRL will transform the public transport system, delivering the critical wheel on our hub and spokes train network and changing how people move around Melbourne. “The multi-faceted project will reshape how we grow in the decades ahead – creating major employment centres in the middle suburbs with more housing options, services, and open and public space all a short walk from an SRL train station. “SRL Airport is also underway from

Sunshine to Melbourne Airport, delivering a long-awaited rail connection to the airport by 2029. Early works have been underway in Clayton since June and the next phase of service relocations starts in Glen Waverley in the new year. Preparatory works will also kick off at Burwood and Monash, and at Box Hill to relocate the 109 tram terminus on Whitehorse Rd ahead of construction of the new Box Hill SRL station. With the next stage of early works beginning in 2023, hundreds of local jobs and a pipeline of opportunities for apprentices, trainees and cadets will start to take shape on one of Victoria’s most important projects. Jacinta Allan, Deputy Premier, said: “ Suburban Rail Loop is a project our city and state needs – and the emphatic election result shows beyond doubt that Victorians want it too. “Suburban Rail Loop won’t just transform our public transport system – slashing travel times and easing congestion – it will help manage how our city grows, creating a long pipeline of jobs and training opportunities.”

■ Monash Council last week endorsed its inaugural LGBTIQA+ Action Plan. Monash Mayor, Cr Tina Samardzija, says she is proud that the Plan was endorsed at her first meeting as Mayor. “As the closest level of government to the community, we have an important role in celebrating diversity, encouraging social inclusion and ensuring equity, safety and access across Monash for everyone, regardless of sexuality, sex characteristics or gender identity,” said Cr Samardzija.
Knox leads study
■ Knox City Council will lead a study conducted by seven councils to research and understand how to implement a reusable sanitary and incontinence program to reduce waste to landfill. After food waste, disposable nappies and sanitary and incontinence products going to landfill is becoming one of the most significant waste issues, comprising between 5-15 per cent of waste in household bins. The other participating municipalities are Whitehorse City Council, Hume City Council, Maribyrnong City Council, Maroondah City Council, Stonnington City Council and Yarra Ranges Council.
Steane is Mayor
■ Cr Rob Steane was elected as Maroondah’s 27th Mayor during a special ceremony livestreamed to the community. Cr Tasa Damante was elected to the role of Deputy Mayor. Cr Steane said it was a great honour to be elected to represent the Council in its third year of the current four-year term. This is Councillor Steane’s third Mayoral term and he will hold the position for the next 12 months.
Plastics ban soon
■ Whitehorse Council advises that the State Government will phase out some problematic single-use plastics from sale or supply across the state from February 1. Items proposed for this ban include: ■ drinking straws ■ cutlery including knives, forks, spoons, chopsticks, sporks, splades, food picks and sporks ■ plates ■ drink stirrers and sticks ■ cotton bud sticks? ■ expanded polystyrene food and drink service containers including plates, cups, bowls, c■ lam shells and any cover or lid. The ban will apply to items made from conventional plastic, and those made from degradable, biodegradable and compostable plastic. This change will help Victoria reduce the impact single-use plastic items have on our environment, wildlife and health. Often, they end up incorrectly placed in the recycling bin. This can cause a high level of contamination of recycling materials and put avoidable stress on the cost of waste processing and the environment. Items from the Victorian ban list can often be avoided or replaced with reusable products. The health advice for the government supports the use of reusable items with appropriate cleaning.

■ A former election candidate received a six-month good behaviour bond after pleading guilty to nominating as a candidate while ineligible in a hearing at Ringwood Magistrates’ Court. Steven Andrew Marks will serve the bond without conviction and pay a $300 penalty and $700 towards the prosecution's costs. Mr Marks nominated as a candidate for McAlpin Ward in Maroondah Council in the 2020 general election. The Victorian Electoral Commission referred information relating to Mr Marks’ eligibility to the Inspectorate, who confirmed that Mr Marks had prior convictions that would render him ineligible to be a candi-
