Firearms seized in raid
■ Detectives from the Major Drug Squad seized 10 imitation firearms, five scopes, a silencer, three imitation grenades and various drugs during a Firearm Prohibition Order service in Coburg on Thursday (Feb. 2).
Police had been at the address to serve the FPO on a 40-year-old Coburg man.
During a search of the property, police located the imitation firearms (including imitation handguns, assault rifles and submachine guns), five scopes, a silencer, three imitation grenades, a grenade launcher, nine magazines and small quantities of what appear to be heroin and prescription medication.
The man was charged with 10 counts of prohibited person possess imitation firearm, possess heroin and possess prescription medication.
He has been bailed to appear at Melbourne Magistrates’ Court on April 21.
Since they were introduced in May 2018, Victoria Police has issued over 1700 FPOs across the state.
Once issued, an FPO remains in effect for 10 years for adults and five years for children, which is those between 14 and 17 years of age.
During that time, the individual is prohibited from acquiring, possessing, carrying or using any firearm or firearm related item such as ammunition.
They are also unable to enter a range of premises including firearms dealers, shooting ranges or firearms clubs.
The charges relating to FPOs are significant – 10 years imprisonment for acquiring, possessing, carrying or using a firearm or firearm related item.
