Melbourne Press Network

54-Year Tradition

The Melbourne Press Network story began on September 14, 1969, when Gordon Barton published the first edition of the Observer newspaper.

Over the ensuing half-century, with several interruptions, there have been four publishers: Gordon Barton, Maxwell Newton, Peter Isaacson and Ash Long. Long has published the Melbourne Observer for the past 21 years, since 2002. He is the longest-serving Publisher of the popular Victorian masthead.

(Long, aged 12, was an Observer newsboy for Barton back in September 1969.)

Newspapers Evolve

The Observer newspaper was published on Sundays for 20 years. Since 2002, it has been a midweek publication.

The Observer is now contained as a free insert into each of the localised editions covering 40 areas across all of Melbourne, the Mornington Peninsula, and peri-urban areas.

Since 2002, the Melbourne Observer has also been available online, with Digital Editions appearing free.

The print editions appeal to the older demographic, 39-andover, with a particular skew towards 55-and-over. It has a 72 per cent female readership.

Closest to the people

Since 1978, Ash Long’s companies have also been involved with local newspapers.

Long was an executive with Leader Newspapers, a consult-

tant with Text Media (as Publisher of The Canberra Weekly), and as a Proprietor of his own publishing companies.

As a journalist, Long was named Victorian Best Local Reporter (Country Press Association). He was a member of the National Promotions Committee of the Australian Suburban Newspapers’ Association, later a National Awards Judge. He was a Director of the industry body, Allied Suburban Newspapers.

Targeted media

As well as the Melbourne Observer, the local newspapers have been consolidated under The Local Paper banner.

After the 2009 Black Saturday fires, a special purpose newspaper called The Phoenix was produced, which gave away $1.3 million of free advertising to small businesses in the bushfire recovery area.

Since 2016, Local Paper titles have grown across Victoria, with

localised editions for 40 different local government areas. The editorial forumula is ‘local names and faces’ with hyperlocal coverage of news and sport.

When Leader Newspapers closed the last of print operations in April 2020, The Local Paper network expanded across almost all of Melbourne, Mornington Peninsula, and beyond.

Value for advertisers

This Media Kit provides information for each of the localised editions.

The Divisions of the newspapers are organised as:

■ Eastern Suburbs: KnoxSherbrooke, Manningham, Maroondah, Progress (Boroondara), Whitehorse

■ Greater DandenongFrankston-Peninsula: CaseyCardinia, Greater Dandenong, Frankston, Mornington Peninsula, Southern Peninsula, Western Port

■ Northern: Diamond Valley, Heidelberger, Northcote, Preston- Reservoir, Whittlesea Post
