Direct Bin Hire

After working for somebody else’s company for 10 years, Mustafa Elboden decided to launch out and start his own rubbish removal and bin hire company, Direct Bin Hire. Being inb the ‘bin’ business for over 10 years, Mustafa says he loves the job because of the daily changing surroundings. “You are never certain where you will be from day to day,” he says. “I enjoy the physical side of the work. Men’s Health Week: June 13-19 Mind, Body, Soul Festival in Melb. this weekend

■ In celebration of Men's Health Week 2011 (June 13-19), the 'What'sYour Score?' survey has been developed to encourage Australian men to start thinking about their health. Participants are given the opportunity online to compare their score with some of Australia's high profile sport personalities, such as Danny Frawley, Alistair Clarkson, Sam Thaiday and Matt Giteau, to see how they measure up. The simple health assessment, which is based up on questions developed by Foundation 49, Diabetes Australia and the Skin College of Australia and New Zealand and supported by the Australian General Practice Network, covers a number of health and lifestyle related questions, which can impact on men's health. The survey will assist GPs and pharmacists to manage lifestylerelated risk factors by providing a framework for raising and discussing lifestyle risk factors with men and

providing simple patient education and referral to other providers to support a healthy lifestyle. Australian men are being encouraged to complete the survey, either online or in the campaign brochure, take it along to a GP, then send it in for a chance to win a number of sports prizes, including signed AFL and NRL merchandise,V8 fast laps and tickets to football games. Men's Health Week is a strong reminder to men that their health is important. Health risks, such as type 2 diabetes, bowel cancer, skin cancer and even testosterone deficiency, can be reduced through simple lifestyle changes and a yearly visit to the GP. It is often the simplest alterations to day-to-day life that can make the difference to a man's health risks. It has been proven that by increasing heart rate, with 30 minutes of daily exercise, sexual function issues, depression and type 2 diabetes can be prevented. - Sarah Campbell

Travel & Touring:Victoria

Enjoy the Queen’s Birthday holiday weekend in Victoria ■ The countdown is on for the biggest craic in the southern hemisphere as the National Celtic Festival gets set to take over the coastal town of Portarlington on the June 1013 long-weekend. Now in its ninth year at the beautiful seaside village on Victoria’s Bellarine Peninsula, the National Celtic Festival is proudly the largest and most diverse celebration of Celtic music and culture this side of the equator. Organisers have pulled out all stops, gathering together a line-up of acts of unprecedented calibre, and assembling some of the most interesting elements of Celtic culture to tickle the fancy of the thousands who flock to this family-friendly event. One of the unusual inclusions this year is ‘The Coming of the Quaich’. This traditional Scottish communal drinking vessel, used to share a “wee dram” among friends, will make a special stop at Portarlington as part of its two-

year-long world tour. Those who partake of the Quaich are invited to sign the accompanying logbook, post a photo online and view the map showing the Quaich’s extensive travels. Practitioners from The Glen Lachlann Estate College of Arms. Celtic branch of Western Martial Arts, will be displaying its historical fencing techniques and holding competitions at the festival, including longsword, short sword, sabre, rapier and dual weapons. Young maidens beware! The ‘Obby ‘Oss will be appearing over the weekend trying to catch you as it goes by adorned with gruesome mask and black cloak. This ancient tradition originated in Padstow, Cornwall where the ‘Obby ‘Oss (Cornish dialect for ‘Hobby Horse’) Festival is held annually to celebrate the coming of Spring. Festival director Una McAlinden said this year’s program was by far the

June 25, July 23 and Aug. 27

festival’s best yet:“The calibre of bands, both internationally and nationally, is the best ever, and the sheer diversity of cultural experiences available is incredible.” Ms McAlinden said. Transportation to the National Celtic Festival also gets interesting this year, with the historic replica tall ship Enterprize providing unique seafaring passage to and from the festival and even overnight accommodation onboard ship (details at www.enterprize.org.au ).The Enterprize is also one of the many atmospheric venues at the festival from which to enjoy world-class Celtic music. Searoad Ferries has a special offer for those coming across the bay from the Mornington Peninsula to nearby Queenscliff – passengers in a car will travel free when they present their National Celtic Festival ticket (details at www.searoad.com.au ). The music really drives this

festival, and whether you’re a hard-core traditionalist, partygoer, or just a family looking for a fun weekend, this year’s program truly has something to suit all ages and music tastes. The international line-up includes arguably the world’s most popular Celtic-folk band, Solas (US), performing in Australia exclusively at the National Celtic Festival; the “pure dead brilliant” Scottish fiddle of Hanneke Cassel Trio (US); edgy contemporary singer-songwriter Eleanor McEvoy (Ireland); Scottish Gaelic songstress Christine Primrose (Isle of Skye); and two cultures unite with hot young duo Sophie and Fiachra (Canada/Ireland). The Australian contingent will be well-represented by loads of festival favourites and fresh new faces including The Bushwackers; Sunas; Maria Forde; McAlpine’s Fusiliers; Jimmy Moore and Claddagh; Catherine Fraser and Friends; Highlander; Oriel Glennen;

George Jackson Band; SiobhanOwen and Riogh. “This festival’s profile has grown to the point that it now attracts a great number of people from interstate and overseas,” Ms McAlinden said. Among the many highlights on this year’s program will be the Celtic Pipes and Drums spectacular featuring hundreds of pipers and drummers gathered from across the country. Also the festival’s own National Golden Fiddle Awards; Celtic comedy shows; a huge singing program; and a treat for fans. All festival venues are cosily heated and located within easy walking distance around the town centre.The undercover Celtic market will house more than 80 stalls bursting with Celtic treasures, delicious food and local produce to take home. To book tickets, visit www.nationalcelticfestival.com or phone Geelong Performing Arts Centre on (03) 5225 1200.

Travellers’ Good Buys

with David Ellis

Adventure destinations are islands apart ■ They're not the places you’re going to get to on gargantuan cruise liners that register their guests in their thousands. Nor where the emphasis boasts of gourmet dining – if such is not a paradox when you consider they’re nightly churning out up to 12,000 or more soups, entrees, mains and desserts at dinner . Nor where afterwards your interest is a glitzy stage show through which you mostly ponder whether next-day if it will be a facial, nail-job, time on the treadmill, or in the bar… But then if they’re the ships that hold the most interest for you, you’re probably not interested in these other places anyway. We’re talking about the world’s most-remote island destinations, places that have even the eyes of your travel agent most-likely glazing over in disinterest, and yet with our planet transforming every day, have 21st century adventure-holidaymakers lining-up to visit like there’s no tomorrow. And they’re doing it on “expedition vessels” that most often carry fewer than 100 environmentally-sensitive and ecologically-aware travellers to some of the most remote and fragile destinations on Earth. “Expedition cruising is quite possibly the purest form of ecotourism,” says Roderick Eime, editor of Adventure Cruise Guide, whose fourth edition has just been published by

NZ gold rush country yields again ■ Back in the 1860s thousands of hopefuls rushed to New Zealand’s Otago region as the cry of “Gold!” rang out across the South Island countryside – and today, 150 years on, there’s a new “gold rush” going-on in the region. But this time it’s for the wines from vineyards that many consider impossibly steep and rocky, and in particular Pinot Noir that’s winning gold at shows and judging from vines that seem to revel in these toughest conditions. One maker, Essenze Wines has just released here its 2010 Regional Central Otago Pinot Noir from fruit that winemaker Corey Ryan chose from a scattering of vineyards to give diverse flavours from diverse ripening times. “Bendigo is the warmest region,” he says, “giving rich, full-flavoured fruit, while Northburn Station’s organically-run vineyards produce fruit with a touch of typical Central Otago thyme, and a half dozen others even further south give later-ripening fruit with differing but wonderful red-fruit and floral characters.” It all makes for a great drop, particularly at $19.99, whose overall red cherry and plum characters make it a nice choice with veal cutlets and roast vegies.

We’re archived on http://vintnews.com

One For Lunch ■ With winter now on us, a great combination for a family or friends’ Sunday lunch is Logan Wines’ Weemala 2009 Merlot, teamed with roast chicken and Mediterranean vegetables, or a simple hearty beef stew. This wine from Mudgee in the NSW Central Ranges, is one of those brooding reds to enjoy right now, or to put away in a cool dark spot for anything up to five years of so to brood to its heart content over its rich berry-fruit flavours that are paired with tobacco, violet, black olive and chocolate characters. At just $18 you’ll realise why winemaker, Peter Logan says it’s shaping as his favourite from 2009 for this year’s cold-weather dining enjoyment.

Australia’s Cruise Passenger Magazine. “Adventure and expedition ships take small numbers of thoughtful people to places where there is no infrastructure when they arrive, and at which no evidence is left behind when they leave,” he says. “They’re some of the world’s most remarkable destinations and can only be reached by small ship – and the occasional yachtie – and thank goodness for that.” We asked Roderick to suggest his favourite five island destinations you can’t fly to, nor ever hope to visit aboard the 3000-passenger behemoths. Here are his nominations: 1. Macquarie Island, Australia: Home to around 20 Australian scientists and support staff, Macquarie captivates everyone who visits as part of an Antarctic adventure cruise. Halfway between Tasmania and Antarctica its seals and penguins were hunted to almost-extinction in the 19th and 20th Centuries. Replaced by cats, rats and rabbits, man’s influence is slowly being reversed; the ferals are going, the wildlife returning. Apart from the wildlife, Macquarie is famous for its unique rocks. 2. Fatu Hiva, Marquesas, French Polynesia: After Hawaii, the secondmost remote archipelago in the world. Fatu Hiva is renowned for its unique wood carvings and tapa (bark) cloth making. Thor Heyerdahl and his wife spent time in 1937 researching Fatu Hiva, Back to Nature. A visit can include a challenging hike across the mountain to Hanavave, possibly one of the most delightful and isolated villages anywhere in the world. The picturesque Bay of Virgins is visited monthly by cargo/passenger supply ship Aranui 3. 3. Espanola (Hood) Island, Galápagos Islands: Tiny Espanola was named by the Spanish after themselves. The British also named it after their Admiral Samuel Hood. Its isolation in the Galapagos Islands was also its salvation as the more northerly islands were attacked by mutineering seamen, pirates and whalers. It’s home to seals and marine iguanas, the unique Blue Footed Booby and critically endangered Waved Albatross. Excellent diving and snorkelling for its few visitors. 4. Deception Island, Antarctica: This collapsed volcanic caldera off the northern tip of the Antarctic Peninsula drips with history, wildlife and stunning scenery. It was once home to whaling and Antarctic researchers. There’s a treacherously narrow and windy entry; visitors can stroll the abandoned whaling base and teeming colony of 200,000 Chinstrap Penguins. Sir Hubert Wilkins and pilot, Ben Eielson set off from here to become the first to fly over Antarctica in 1928. Their hangar’s still there. 5. Beechey Island, Canadian Arctic: In Canada’s Wellington Channel. Some time in 1845, the English explorer and one-time Lieutenant-Governor of Tasmania, Sir John Franklin sheltered here in winter in 1845 during his ill-fated quest to chart the Northwest Passage. Three of his men are buried there today, including a 21year-old Petty Officer whose body was found amazingly-preserved above ground; Franklin’s and other’s bodies were never found. Adventure Cruise Guide details how to visit these and other impossibly remote locations. There’s a comprehensive listing of major operators, what you should pack, and what adventurous add-ons are available.
