MAY THE FOURTH BE WITH YOU The Legend of King O’Malley

● King O’Malley ■ “The Honorable Members will kindly refrain from spewing, spitting and breaking wind.” The legendary King O’Malley was born in Quebec, Canada, sometime in the 1850s, but may have been born in Kansas, USA. The one-time insurance agent reinvented himself as the first (and only) bishop of the Waterlily Rockbound and Redskin Church of the Cayuse Nation where Bishop O’Malley warned his disciples of the evils of ‘stagger juice’. Abandoning his life as a fundamentalist preacher O’Malley set sail for a new life in Australia – “God’s own country” - where “caucus is the next best thing to religion”. O’Malley drove the first foundation peg in the dirt for the national capital, called for a national Commonwealth Bank and championed the rights of women and illegitimate children before, as the Honorable Member for Tasmania and ‘ruminating non-conformist’, he took on the Member for West Sydney, Billy Hughes, in the battle over conscription. Written by Bob Ellis and Michael Boddy, The Legend Of King O’Malley was first performed in 1970 during the Vietnam War and would have had an enormous impact on that war’s own contentious conscription debate. Looking at it from this century it is showing its age and is a little long. However it is great to be able to revisit Australian classic political satire in all its glory. A combination of music hall, vaudeville and revivalist meeting, the success of this production is its cast who all lend their considerable talents to this rousing and energetic production. James Cook is a convincing King – ‘the general of Jesus’ and federationalist. Tara Rankine does a great job as O’Malley’s long-lost love Rosie and Alex Duncan is terrific as Nick Angel, O’Malley’s devilish conscience. Designers Daniel Harvey and Zoe Rouse have also done a great job in transforming the tiny Courthouse space. Season: La Mama Courthouse, Carlton, until April 20. Tickets: $25/$15. ■ Sometimes people think that accomplished classical musicians are only interested in one field of music. Nothing could be further from the truth for orchestral conductor Brett Kelly, whose other job is principal trombonist in the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra. Brett is also a passionate Star Wars movie fan, so when the chance came to lead an extravaganza to celebrate International Star Wars Day on May 4 (“May the fourth”), he jumped at the opportunity. Brett will lead Melbourne Youth Orchestra, guest musicians, choirs and actors, making a 200-strong performing force to unleash a performance on a Star Wars-loving audience at Melbourne Recital Centre. Well-known professional classical musician will join Melbourne Youth Orchestra to lead the way, with Sarah Curro as guest concertmaster, Jasen Moulton as guest French Horn principal, Shane Hooton as guest trumpet principal and Chris Farrands as guest trombone principal. The concert will feature the much-loved music form the six Star Wars films, and the audience will be forced to decide their own fate by choosing to be either Sith or Jedi, against the background of a choral clash and an epic light show. Star Wars fans are encouraged to don appropriate costumes. Melbourne's choral community will come together to form the Tusken Raider Choir, Grand Choir of the Republic and the Imperial Army Chorale. And for die hard Star Wars fans, there is a special interval event where premium ticket holders will have access to the 'Mos Eisley' space port, featuring the music from the Cantina Band, with imperial refreshments. ● Te Ua, Alison Lemoh and Sheridan Hussein ■ Good opera is that it can be interpreted and performed well so many ways. Bizet's Carmen is a case in point. Melbourne company Emotionworks Cut Opera is staging a non-traditional version of the famous opera at the Spanish Club in Fitzroy. Director Julie Edwardson has fused the delightful Carmen score with a mix of salsa, Latin, blues and jazz, to produce an exciting version of this opera classic. Julie's idea is to expose non-opera audiences to opera by mixing it with other performance styles, using a mix of musical genres and vocal styles and including some Salsa dancing as well. "Our company is unique by changing the face of opera which is long overdue - our aim is to excite and generate a new audience to opera by fusing musical genres and performing in site-specific spaces," she explained. Julie promises that this Carmen will have blood, sex, murder and intrigue in this cabaret version of Carmen that will get your feet dancing. And she promises that in this 90-minute show there are definitely no boring bits, making it an ideal way to introduce newcomers to the great world of opera, and shake up a few traditionalists. The cast includes Te Ua, Alison Lemoh and Sheridan Hussein, and is on at the Spanish Club, 59 Johnston St, Fitzroy on Saturday, May 17 at 8.30 pm, and Sunday May 18 and 25 at 2.30 pm. ■ More than 100 years since it alarmed censors, appalled critics and thrilled audiences, Henrik Ibsen’s Ghosts will open on Thursday, May 22 at Southbank Theatre, The Sumner, when internationally renowned Australian director Gale Edwards returns to MTC to direct this unflinching critique of marriage and social convention. Linda Cropper and Philip Quast star in this gripping revival of Ibsen’s masterpiece about a wronged wife alongside Pip Edwards, Ben Pfeiffer and Richard Piper. Featuring Edvard Munch inspired set and costume designs, the story tells of Pastor Manders coming to Mrs Alving’s home to discuss the opening of an orphanage in her late husband’s name, permanently honouring his goodness and generosity. For Mrs Alving, however, the dedication will be the final great lie in a marriage filled with lies. As the façade begins to shatter, Mrs Alving is forced to reveal the truth about her husband’s secret indiscretions, in a desperate attempt to exorcise the ghosts of her past and save her son Oswald. Director Gale Edwards says the power of Ibsen’s writing is his ability to give the lives of women the weight that the Greeks gave their tragic male heroes. “Mrs Alving in Ghosts is one of Ibsen’s most intriguing and tragic characters. Stars: **** Verdict: In this sequel to 2012's The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey director Peter Jackson doesn't disappoint as the dwarves, the Hobbit Bilbo Baggins and the Wizard Gandalf continue on their quest through dangerous territories to reclaim their mountainous homeland and valley's of gold, Erebor, guarded by the all powerful and legendary Dragon, Smaug. This is the one fans of J.R.R. Tolkien's epic novel have been waiting for, and they are in for the big treat! After setting up the characters and story in the first instalment, The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey, this is a full on, full throttle, no holds barred spectacle filled with thrills, chills, excitement and eye-popping imagery, a cinematic feast that devours everything in its path. And just when you thought you've seen it all, the final confrontation with the Dragon Smaug (brilliantly voiced by Benedict Cumberbatch) is a jaw-dropping, awe inspiring experience of storytelling and technology unlike anything before! Verdict: With the 70s behind him, a once top rated newsman, Ron Burgundy, and his old team return to take New York's first 24-hour news channel and the world by storm. This follow up to 2004's cult hit Anchorman: The Legend of Ron Burgundy is an embarrassingly unfunny turkey, and that's putting it mildly. It took ten years to bring this mess to the screen, and my sympathy goes to those who had to cough up hard earned money to see this at the box office. I heard star, co-writer and co-producer Will Ferrell say he felt like he had an 'out of body experience making Anchorman 2 .... well Will, it was not only an out of body experience for me, I had an out of stomach experience as well watching it. Like Father, Like Son ■ (PG). 121 minutes. Opens in selected cinemas on April 17. Quietly and emotionally observant, Like Father, Like Son is the kind of satisfying cinematic experience that adult audiences crave for. Masaharu Fukuyama plays Ryota Nonomiya, a very successful businessman who prides himself on having a strong work ethic and a controlled, orderly home environment. His wife Midori (Machiko Ono) helps maintain this sense of structure, as does his six year-old son Nobuko (Jun Fubuki), who is pressured by his father to excel in a variety of areas, whether it be school or learning the piano. All this changes when Ryota and Midori are contacted by their hospital to inform them that the child they have been raising for six years isn't theirs, and that their son was actually switched at birth. Representitives from the hospital set up an introduction with the parents who that received the Nonomiya's child, Yudai Saiki (Lily Franky) and his wife Yukari (Yoko Maki). This allows the Saiki family to meet their real son as well. Yudai is the polar opposite of Ryota; a relaxed, occasionally irresponsible man who runs a local repair shop. But where Ryota is cool and distant, Yudai is open and warm-hearted, leading to a number of humurous encounters. The confronting proposition is put forward to both families; do they keep the child they have nurtured and loved for the last six years, or will biology rule the day with the children being given back to their rightful parents? In lesser hands this could have become overly manipulative and exaggerated, but in the hands of writer/director Hirokazu Kore'eda, this evolves into a delicate and tender drama, developing his characters in a real, convincingly natural manner. His work with children is again exemplary (anyone who has seen the heartrending Nobody Knows or the charming I Wish will undoubtably agree), and the way Kore'eda gets seemingly genuine responses from his young actors is a sight to behold, keeping this compelling story utterly believable. The whole cast is superb. A huge star in his native country, Fukuyama (who starred in the recent Midsummer's Equation, a highly entertaining mystery/drama that was a big-screen spin-off of the hit TV series Galileo, which also comes recommended) perfectly balances Ryota's steely surface with a growing awareness of what this distressing situation is doing to Nobuko. Ono is a tower of strength as Midori, as is Maki as Yukari, and author-turned-actor Franky (Tokyo Tower - Mom And Me, And Sometimes Dad / The Devil's Path / All Around Us) makes Yudai the kind of good-natured, flawed person that many people can relate to. Like Father, Like Son is a movie that earns the audience's respect and involvement, crafted by a gifted filmmaker (whose other notable credits include Afterlife, Distance, Still Walking, and Air Doll) who puts genuine people and emotion over caricatures and melodrama, and should be

sought-out by any movie-goer who wants something that is truly nourishing. RATING - ****½.

The Raid 2 ■ (R). 148 minutes. Last days in cinemas, coming soon to DVD and BluRay. After leaving action fans breathless with The Raid, editor/writer/director Gareth Evans returns with The Raid 2, which should have audiences feeling similarly exhilerated and exhausted. Picking up almost directly after the first film ended, Part Two sees a battered Rama (Iko Uwais) being ushered away to a secret location by a covert anti-corruption squad, lead by Bunawar (Cok Simbara). The bewildered officer is convinced to go undercover in an effort to bring down several dirty police officials, who are in the pockets of two major crime gangs, one Indonesian, the other Japanese. In order to do this, Rama is sent to prison so he can befriend Uco (Arifin Putra), the son of the Indonesian gang boss. The mission Rama thinks will take a matter of months ends up consuming over two years of his life, isolating him from his wife and young child. The emergence of a third gang, headed by the ruthless Bejo (Alex Abbad) threatens to cause this careful plan to come crashing down. The refreshing thing about The Raid 2 is that Evans doesn't merely rehash the original, but instead wants to build on the foundation he has created, expanding the world that the straight-arrow Rama has entered. From the lowly foot soldiers to the powerful bosses, Evans certainly wants to enter Godfather-type territory, and while it may not achieve those kind of heights, it's an ambitious approach that is both admirable and effective. A jump in budget also sees a more accomplished and visually impressive movie. Uwais is again dynamic as Rama, and remains an action hero who is human and likeable. A strong cast helps validate the sincere script, adding weight to the many extended dramatic sequences. The action, like in the first film, is dazzling, with brutal, brilliant martial arts work that appears jaw-droppingly realistic (the prison courtyard sequence is amazing). These extremely well-trained experts are so quick that sometimes the camera has trouble picking up all their moves. The Raid 2 is a commendable, worthy sequel that more than delivers the goods, and after draining moviegoers for two-and-a-half hours, it leaves the way open for Part Three. Bring it on. Musical director Stacey-Louise Camilleri is a seasoned performer, musician, director and choreographer, having been involved in a plethora of productions over the years. A private vocal coach and piano teacher, she holds a Bach. Flying Fruit Fly Circus ■ The Melbourne International Comedy Festival and Arts Centre Melbourne present the Flying Fruit Fly Circus – Circus Under My Bed – until April 19 at the Fairfax Studio, Arts Centre. Some 17athletic, talented young circus performers aged between nine and 19 present a spectacular, fast-moving show, with acts timed perfectly to retain young audience interest and enthral all ages. Under the direction of Jodie Farrugia, the story unfolds around principal character Celeste having built an imaginary world in her bedroom, a circus, which vibrantly comes to life. Well-rehearsed, polished circus performers treat us to acrobats, trapeze, rings, aerial silks, hula hoops, juggling, clowns, breathtaking balancing acts, slapstick and mime, and more. A worthwhile message this show conveys to young patrons is the importance of mutual trust, care and teamwork to achieve a goal. The terrific choreography is creative and innovative, and varied background music helps set the narrative’s tone and mood beautifully, although occasionally overpowers the narration. The Flying Fruit Fly Circus is Australia’s National Youth Circus, founded in 1979 . Based in Albury-Wodonga, the company offers a full-time, elite circus training course for young people aged eight to eighteen years of age. It is exciting to watch these amazingly agile ‘ordinary kids doing extraordinary things’ and wonder if one day we will see them performing as adult circus performers.. Blind umpy has the surgery! ■ Yes I’ve had the eye surgery. Yes it was successful. Yes I have the other eye done in three weeks. And Yes to the multitude of fanatical, AFL fans, who yelled 60 odd years ago, with raucous voices when I was umpiring that I was ‘blind’. And where was my ‘white cane’? So belatedly accept my apologies! Perhaps it was a good thing because I earned the reputation of “letting the game flow” with a minimum of ‘whistle blowing’! Our game and its administrators will always be criticised. This past week it was about the poor crowds blamed on the boring football and the exorbitant prices of the food and drink. In respect to the boring spectacle the fans have to realise the game is all about winning. The coaches are judged on their success of wins, will the team make the finals and can they win the flag? In the final analysis who cares whether to win the coach has to choke the defence, eliminate the thrilling spectacle of great high marking with preference to the fisted punch in the pack and in so doing destroy the glamour of the goal-kicking full forwards who regularly booted 100 goals or more. Today up forward the dribble kick is preferred. It is not FOOTball. It is Dribble ball and Handball. And ‘turnovers’. We do have a saviour in the dominating Hawks whose success is built on pure, pin-pointed, perfect foot skills.

This man is a credit to his athleticism and endurance. He stamped on the ruck wrestling, the holding and blocking going for marks and would not allow the endless packs to form like most current umpires who wait an interminable time for a miracle to see the ball dribble out from frenzy hands.

He explained to young Magpie ruckman, Brodie Grundy, why his crude interference was penalised and hopefully this upcoming star took the advice on board. Umpire McInerney did influence his colleagues which is one of the reasons for mixing the umpiring teams of three with experience and youth. ★ One other observation concerns the bouncing of the ball in the centre to start each quarter and after a goal is kicked. The modern day ‘experts’ especially the on-ball ex player commentators are continually calling for the ‘throw-up’ and so entirely eliminate the bounce. Why? Because the majority of umpires cannot master the simple skill procedure for the perfect bounce. Fortunately Leigh Matthews, the player voted the Best of the Century, jumped into the debate and pointed out this is an ‘unique’ skill in our game and it should be retained. We spend fortunes on player skills but it amazes me no one bothers with this simple art in umpiring. It is pleasing to report young umpire, Nick Foot, No. 25, is very good at bouncing. I’m proud to be the sponsor to ‘keep the bounce’ unlike Jason Dunstall’s hate of the exciting ‘dribble’ goal.

The Mike Moroney-trained Voleuse De Coeurs, who likes it wet, could be hard to beat. It raced in last year's Melbourne Cup, before being transferred to the powerful staying stable of Moroney. Another Victorian galloper who is improving the Sydney way of galloping is the country trained Sertorius, who has come in sharply in the latest markets. ATC Oaks ■ The Kris Leestrained filly, Lucia Valentia, has firmed into outright favourtism after a big win in the wet recently. She has come right into 2-1 favourite from the Victoria filly Solicit, who ran on well for a good second behind Lucia Valentia, at Rosehill. Of the others don't leave out Zanbagh, my tip for the Oaks at $6. She was runner-up in the Victorian Oaks last November and finished fifth at her last outing after drawing out in the car park, and came from about 11th from the 300-metre mark to run fifth behind Lucia Valentia. She has been trained to the minute and will be very hard to beat. Of the other fillies, New Zealand Derby runner-up Rising Romance will improve on her last run.

This is an over the top, in your face tale from Trainspotting author Irvine Welsh. Driven with fierce energy and black humour, James McAvoy is a standout as he attacks his character ferocious energy and compelling conviction. There's something here to offend everone. However, it falls short being in the league of Oscar winning director Danny Boyle's groundbreaking Trainspotting and you can only wonder what the outcome may have been had Danny Boyle been at the helm. This is not exactly a picture postcard or commercial for the Scottish Tourism industry. You have been warned. - James Sherlock

3 nights of racing ■ The focus of the week has been on Mildura with the annual Pacing Cup Carnival taking place consisting of three night's racing - Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday. Whilst the locals enjoyed a good night on the Tuesday, so did the visitors - Ballarat's Colin Holloway and reinsman son Brett successful with 4-Y-0 gelding Excuse To Live in the 2nd Heat of the Mildura Working Man's Club Pace, Melton's Lance Justice the 1st Heat of the Mildura Pacing Cup with Machin Out, Long Forest duo Andy and Kate Gath the 1st Heat of the Mark Gurry & Associates Cup with Graybuck and Bannockburn's Geoff Webster the 2nd Heat of the Pacing Cup with Flaming Flutter driven by Greg Sugars.

Winners at Cobram ■ At Cobram on Wednesday, the Goulburn Valley waswell to the fore - Kialla's Peter Hornsby scoring with Nica Macdonon, Gavin Blake (Echuca) with Robbie Zuve, Steve Boyington (Kialla) with Magic Moment Lombo and Darryl Hill (Kaarimba) with Lust. Bendigo's Garry Graham was victorious with Endorsement (Haydon Gray), as was Avenel's David Aiken with Dizzy Interest (Chris Alford). Narrandera visitor Shaun Snudden landed a stable double with Thunder Tom and Transaction both handed to perfection by Victorian Leigh Sutton who is now attached to the stable.

Sent ahead mid-race ■ The most impressive winner on the day at Cobram was Courage Under Fire/Pareen gelding Smokey Quartz in the Wadeson Family 3-Y-0 Pace over 2170 metres. Trained and driven by Monegeetta's David Miles, Smokey Quartz bred and raced by John Dorrington under the banner of Dorro Nominees Pty Ltd possied well back in the running line from gate four on the second line, before being sent forward mid-race to park outside the heavily supported Jack Starzzz first up for David Aiken's barn. Showing plenty of staying prowess, Smokey Quartz proved too strong at the finish for the leader in a rate of 2-02.7 on the wet track, with the rank outsider The Waratah third.

Fisrt win in 11 trips ■ At Bray Raceway Ballarat on Wednesday evening, Ararat trainer Ian (Bomber) Boyd snared the M & L McLean Cleaning Services Trotters Mobile for T0 class over 2200 metres with 4-Y-0 Wind Cries Maori/Katie Page 4-Y-0 mare Brisharlo in a rate of 2-05. Raced by Ian, Darren (Dasher) Davies and families, Brisharlo with Mick Bellman in the sulky led virtually throughout from outside the front line to defeat Caledonian Breeze and Im Not A Trotter to record her first victory in 11 outings.

Winners of interest ■ Other winners of interest on the program were Lierre Noir for Alan and Amy Tubbs (Bacchus Marsh) and Happy Hombre (Barry Lawrence Melton) with Ginger Gleeson in the sulky.

Wet day at Bendigo ■ At a rather wet Bendigo on Thursday, Melton's Mario Azzopardi scored with Tiavons Dream in the Bertocchi Smallgoods 3-Y-0 Vicbred Trotters Mobile, as did veteran Echuca trainer/driver Ron Gilligan with Salute The Wind in the Aldebaran Park Trotters Handicap. Marong trainer John McDermott was successful with Whata Avenue (Lisa Miles) in The Probus Club Of Victoria Friendship Day Pace and Melton's Rod Petroff landed the Bendigo Bank Vicbred Pace with smart 4-Y-0 mare McRita.

Mildura Cup family affair ■ Eight-year-old Jet Laag/Preserved entire Im Blue Double Dee was victorious in taking out its 57th running of the $50,275 (Group 2) Park Douglas Printing Mildura Pacing Cup for M0 or better class horses over 2600 metres at Mildura on Saturday April 13. In what was a real family affair, Im Blue Double Dee trained at Bathurst (NSW) by Steve Turnbull, raced by wife Jenny and driven by daughter Amanda settled four back along the markers after starting from gate two on the second line, with the polemarker Maastricht leading as the start was effected keeping the favourite Flaming Flutter (gate three) wide and Machin Out even wider on the track from outside the front row. Driven with aggression by Greg Sugars, Flaming Flutter was able to assume control within a lap. The action didn’t stop there however, as runs came thick and fast with Hilltop Hustler and Mark Dennis both making forward moves through the middle stages. This allowed Shayne Cramp aboard the home town hero Washington Heritage to ease away from three back the markers into the running line mid-race after starting from inside the second line and going forward to park outside the leader with a lap and a half to travel. Metro Mike (Mark Hayes) was set alight three wide from near last at the bell, with Villagem and Glenn Douglas immediately latching to his back. Putting his foot to the floor at the bell, Cramp and Washington Heritage pressured the leader which kicked away on the final bend. While all this was going on, Im Blue Double Dee which had moved to be three back the markers after Washington Heritage left the inside appeared to be travelling kindly approaching the final bend. Gaining an inside passage on turning (no sprint lane), Im Blue Double Dee ran home best to score by two metres in a thrilling finish over a game Flaming Flutter, with Maastricht running the race of her life to finish third , nine metres away. Both the runner up and third placegetter shifted away from the inside on straightening. Kotare Roland finished fourth after following the winner throughout. In quarters of 30.7, 31.7, 29.7 and 28.4 for the final mile, Im Blue Double

Dee returned a mile rate of 1-59.1 for the journey, nine tenths of a second outside Safari’s 1-58.2 set in 2007 and in winning, took his stakes tally to almost $200,000. A winner of 21 races from 110 outings prior to the race, Im Blue Double Dee has been a consistent performer in the western part of NSW since he first graced the tracks. Im Blue Double Dee was the fourth NSW trained winner of the prestigious race, the others being Wongala Glen (Bill McKenzie 1965), Dillon Light (Kevin Robinson 1973) and Ben’s Image (Vic Frost 1987), although Wongala Glen did the majority (if not all) of his racing in Victoria as he was trained just across the Murray River from Swan Hill. It was also the second time that the fairer sex has won the Cup, the other being Kerryn Manning aboard Go Charles in 2001.

Nostalgia ■ Memories of a bygone era were revived at the Cranbourne Trots on Sunday April 6, when 5Y-0 Modern Art/Schere gelding Wills Son greeted the judge in the Mark Gurry & Associates Pace for C0 class over 1609 metres carrying the colours of the late Lloyd Coram - dark blue, yellow diamonds and sleeves. Trained in the name of Lloyd's widow Rosemary at the family property in Bangholme, Wills Son bred and raced by daughter Georgina was driven by Georgie's close friend Simone Walker, settling mid-field in the moving line from gate two, with polemarker Glenmars Tiger leading. Commencing a forward move at the bell, Wills Son sustained a long run to score a strong 3.2 metre victory in advance of Glenmar Tiger who was no match over the concluding stages,

with Great Caesar Ghost third. The mile rate 2-00.5. Lloyd and brother Bruce were sons of legendary Inter Dominion winning trainer/driver Ben Coram (Dan's Son - 1937) who also had two very good horses by the name of Miraculous and Modern Miracle who were regularly in the winners stall in the halcyon days of the Melbourne Showgrounds.

Settled ■ At Maryborough on Monday, Nagambie's Chris Lang (Jnr) was successful in taking the Aldebaran Park Monte for T0 or better class over 2190 metres with ex-Kiwi 6-Y-0 Sundon/Dispride gelding Lysenko. Ridden by cross country hoop Paul Hamblin, Lysenko stepped cleanly from the 10 metre mark, but took a while to muster speed, settling at the rear of the field, with last season's Monte specialist Optimum leading. Gradually making ground to be three back along the markers at the bell, Lysenko was let down in the final circuit and cruised to the front on the home turn to score an untouched 6.4 metre victory over Optimum and Chipmont Lad which followed his stablemate throughout , returning a mile rate of 2-09.1. Paul Hamblin has been a regular competitor in the Monte races and finally landed his first winner.

■ All eyes were on Mildura on Thursday night for the running of the $14,505 Seelite Windows & Doors Mildura Trotters Cup for T5 or better class over 2600 metres, with Kiwi bred four year old Monarchy/Sunny Gem gelding Unico Crown scoring a brilliant all the way victory. Trained at Lara by Dean Braun and driven by the stable's number one reinsman Chris Alford, Unico Crown began smoothly from the pole to lead and rated to perfection around the tight circuit, ran out an easy 7.7 metre victor in advance of Sandys Boy which trailed, making no impression in the run home, with Monte specialist Motu Young Jacob a further 2.7 metres back in third place from a 20 metre handicap after racing mid-field in the moving line. With quarters of 31.1, 31.1, 31.2 and 29.9 for the last 1609 metres, Unico Crown returned a mile rate of 2-05.5, well outside Si Capisco's track record of 2-03.3 set in 2012. Unico Crown has made only one blemish since crossing the Tasman, when unable to handle the tiny Boort track in the Boort Trotting Cup. Earlier in the evening the VSTA Trotters Handicap for T0 to T4 class over 2190 metres was taken out by the Brent Lilley (Bolinda) trained and Lance Justice driven in-form five year old gelding Like It Chilled, a son of Sundon and Rite Effort. Raced by Bruce and Margaret Dalton, Like It Chilled coming from a solo 20 metre backmark settled six back along the markers, with the South Australian visitor Buff Orpington leading out from from the pole before going off stride entering the straight on the first occasion which allowed The Final Cut to take over. Set alight racing for the bell, Like It Chilled was able to stride clear when the leader galloped a lap out. Travelling easily, Like It Chilled coasted to the wire by 18 metres in a rate of 2-08.4 over Candy Digger which was always handy, with Featherfoot Sun another SA raider third.

Winners at Mildura ■ Other visitors to salute the judge on the night at Mildura were : Morior Invictus (Mick Stanley Haddon) with Gavin Lang in the cart, Charli Springfield (Peter and Katrina Salathiel Goornong), Liston (Shaun Kittel -Terang) with Mick Bellman and Sacred Art for veteran South Australian trainer Jim Hurley and Mark Billinger.

Return to the list ■ At Tabcorp Park Melton on Friday, David Aiken's 7-Y-0 Our Sir Vancelot/Troys Dream gelding Composed returned to the winners list for the first time in a eighth month period when victorious in the Cockfighters Ghost Wines Pace for M1 class over 1720 metres, defeating Lombo Cloud Nine and Johnny Quid in a brilliant rate of 1-53.7. Other TP winners were : Josephine Jones (Anna Farrell - Ballan), Mindarie Priddy (David Miles Monegeetta), Weallwantano (Kevin Brough Heywood with Matt Craven in the sulky), Aleppo Midas (Michelle Eastman - Shelbourne with Kerryn Manning driving), Lovable Larrikin (Gaita Pullicino - Rockbank and Daryl Douglas). Bacchus Marsh father and daughter Alan and Amy Tubbs enjoyed a great night with both Blazeaway Macray and Milliondollar Wave winning their respective races. - Len Baker
