■ What a televisual delight to watch the subtle intelligence (dare we say flirting?) of Jennifer Byrne with author Thomas Kenneally on ABC’s Book Club interview series. ■ English language pedants will be interested in Byrne’s use of the word ‘aborginals’ as a noun, rather than aborigines. ■ And full marks to Brilliant Creatures (ABC-TV) with its first instalment concentrating on Clive James, Robert Hughes, Barry Humphries and Germaine Greer. It is presented by novelist Howard Jacobson. ■ Margaret Pomeranz and David Stratton will present their final At The Movies episode on ABC-TV on December 9. The pair have fronted the show for 28 years. ■ Trademark lingering looks in The Bold And The Beautiful have been trimmed by Network 10, by as much as 1:22 in each 30-minute episode ... so there is more time to air commercials. ■ Former Melbourne radio man Tony MacManus is returning to 3AW sister station 6PR to host their Saturday night program. ■ Steve Woods is now hosting a weekly show called Musical Notes on Vision Australia Radio (1179 AM), reports Greg Newman of Jocks Journal.
● Ian Pidd and Sue Giles in Dead Set ■ Dead Set was first performed at La Mama some 20 years ago and yet this quirky, well-crafted musical, feels fresh, funny and original. Written, composed and performed by established theatre directors, Sue Giles and Ian Pidd, the play tells the story of Lionel Tonks (Pidd), a maths teacher complete with Rubiks cube who dreams of being a successful songwriter, and Verity Charity (Giles), English teacher, gifted lyricist and compulsive liar. Recognising how bad he is at metaphors (an introductory song comprehensively and wittily illustrates the point) Lionel advertises for a lyricist. Enter Verity Charity. There are plenty of hilarious moments as the two create a world of their own – “a double life”, to write the great Australian musical, Humping The Swag. There is so much to like about this play. The performances are exceptional – Giles’s over exuberant and uber confident Verity Charity is contrasted by the prickly and insecure Janice Black. Pidd plays the boring maths teacher with consummate awkwardness – only finding his true self when he is the “songwriter”. I particularly enjoyed the classroom scene where he attempted to solicit answers to his unanswerable questions from the audience (enthusiastically assuming the role of students). Music features strongly in the play and Giles and Pidd prove to be talented musicians – it’s amazing how good one guitar and two voices can sound. They created some wonderful melodies with catchy, humorous and sometimes rather odd lyric s. This is clever and entertaining theatre with a dash of nutty charm. I highly recommend this Melbourne Fringe Festival offering at La Mama – you don’t want to wait another 20 years to see it. Season: Until September 28 Time: Wed, Fri 8.30pm, Thurs, Sat, Sun 6.30pm Venue: La Mama, 205 Faraday St, Carlton Tickets: $25 Full, Concession $15 Bookings: www.lamama.com.au or 9347 6142 - Review by Beth Klein

‘The Mesh’ at St Kilda ■ Red Stitch Actors Theatre teams with Arthur in a first-time collaboration, to present The Mesh, playing a premiere season from October 15-November 8. Written by Elise Hearst and directed by Paige Rattray, The Mesh is inspired by the story of Elise’s grandparents, Austrian Jews who fled Europe after the German occupation, daringly escaping and making the long journey to begin a new life in Melbourne. Wolf and Clara, Max and Lottie know how to throw a costume party. Clara is a butterfly and singer, Lottie is a witch, Max is a king amongst men, and Wolf, well, a bit of a wolf. Refugees with no homeland to return to, they ‘party’ in an effort to band together, maintain hope, and save their faltering sanity. Caught in a cruel limbo between past and present and striving to find their place in a new land, they fall under the increasingly sinister surveillance of The Suits as they attempt to gain safety and security. The Mesh is a haunting and timely allegory filled with dancing, original songs and a rich musical score. The cast features Red Stitch ensemble Ella Caldwell, Rosie Lockhart and Olga Makeeva, with guests Tom Dent, Kevin Kiernan-Molloy and Nick Masters. Led by Rattray and producer Belinda Kelly, Arthur makes both text-based and devised new Australian work exploring contemporary Australian identity, myth and magic in a variety of venues including theatres, churchyards, cabaret venues and under their mini-big top. This partnership between Red Stitch and Arthur was born from a shared interest in exploring current voices and urgent questions, and The Mesh unites the intimate text-based work of the Red Stitch ensemble with the heightened visual and physical style of Arthur. Such talent! ■ Talented creators Jane Miller and Beng Oh were the drawcard to attend opening night of Motherf***** (my added asterisks) in La Mama’s Melbourne Fringe Festival at the Courthouse. 15 Minutes From Anywhere presents classical theatre reimagined, in this collective adaptation of works by Greek playwright Sophocles and Roman dramatist Seneca. Text adaptation is written by Jane Miller, with two poems by Ted Hughes. A slow-moving curse resonating down the Cadmus family lineage, including great grandson Laius, king of Thebes and father to Oedipus, results in murder, incest, suicide and self-mutilation. Miller’s script commendably underwent intense workshopping, with an interesting focus on developing the previously minor character of Jocasta as Oedipus’s partner, lover, wife and mother, and her relationship with first husband Laius and brother, Creon. Rarely mentioning characters’ names in the narrative risks confusion for audience members, even those familiar with these classic works. However, the result is a poetic, at times chilling, tale of murder, love, lust, and the tragic consequences of boy unwittingly meeting girl and discovering she is his biological mother. The strong, multi-role playing cast includes Tania Lentini (Jocasta), Antony Talia (Oedipus, Tiresias, Messenger), Troy Larkin (Laius, Oedipus), Keith Brockett

● American comedian Tig Nitaro (see story at right)
■ Bookings are now open to see popular American stand-up comedian Tig Notaro’s show Boyish Girl Interrupted on Tuesday, December 9 at 8pm at the Athenaeum Theatre, as part of her Australian tour. A lot has happened to Tig since she last performed here in 2011. In 2012 at a Los Angeles show, Tig made a seemingly nonchalant detour in her stand-up set to announce that she had just that day been diagnosed with breast cancer. Her blend of humour and matter of fact approach left her audience, including host Louis CK, in both tears and laughter. CK later tweeted, “In my 27 years doing this I have seen a handful of truly masterful performances. One was Tig Notaro last night.” After a hugely successful and critically acclaimed sell-out Edinburgh
Fringe run last year, Notaro has toured extensively. Her second comedy album Live (as in, to live) has sold more than 100,000 copies, a figure unheard of for contemporary comedy albums. The Grammy nominated album was ranked No.1 Comedy Album of 2012 by Entertainment Weekly, New York Magazine and The Onion AV Club whilst Tig herself was recently ranked No. 21 on Rolling Stone’s “50 Funniest People in the World Now” list. Laidback, surreal and sardonic, Notaro’s humour has seen her guest star on shows like The Office, The Sarah Silverman Program and Community with supporting roles in films such as In A World and Walk of Shame. Almost Face To Face
● Stephen House ■ Almost Face to Face is a solo performance written and performed by Stephen House at La Mama and is part of 2014 Melbourne Fringe Festival. This is a premiere and was written during an Irish literature residency. Stephen is a talented writer and performer. He is the Awgie winning playwright-actor of the hit play Appalling Behaviour and has a long relationship with La Mama. Stephen’s impressive performance was quite enticing, maintaining excellent eye contact with his audience, with whom he had a good rapport. This piece, which is directed by Peter Green, is quite challenging and takes us inside the creative mind. He takes us into a risky Dublin world, which is dark, yet at times moving. This is a self-indulgent and at times confrontational journey about creative chaos and living on the edge on the fringes of society. The character seems to roam endlessly through a series of brutal and edgy scenarios. Is it ever too late to face up to what we have become? Performance Season: Until September 28 Venue: La Mama Theatre, 205 Faraday St, Carlton Tickets: $25/$15 Bookings: www.lamama.com.au or 9347 6142 - Review by Jill Page
The Last Torch ■ The Melbourne Fringe Festival launches a new Australian musical, The Last Torch, on October 1 at The Coopers Malthouse. Set in 1588, the show offers a new perspective on the reign of Queen Elizabeth I, and pays homage to the fallen Irish who fought for their independence through the journey of the last Clan leader, Brian O’Rourke. Written by husband and wife duo Frances and Simon O’Neill, The Last Torch tells of the love of the Irish for their culture, love for their children, and their love for each other. “It is romance and passion in the midst of conflict,” says composer/director, Frances. “It’s Les Mis meets Game of Thrones, and a timely piece in many ways. For the first time the O’Rourkes (Princes of Breffny) are to have their story told.” The show explores the writers’ Irish heritage, and Simon O’Neill points out that in the pages of Irish history, their families fought together. “Now we are united again in telling this important story,” he says. Fresh from the West End, actor Tim Carney will lead a cast of 19 performers, while a 13-piece orchestra under the musical direction of Simon O’Neill, will bring to life the show’s traditional Irish and Spanish music. Actor Tim Carney says a new musical is a huge creative process. “It’s brilliant to see an Australian musical hit the Melbourne stage,” says Carney. Seven years in the making, The Last Torch promises to deliver a night rich in Irish passion. Performance Season: October 1-4 at 7pm Venue: The Coopers Malthouse, The Beckett Theatre Tickets: $28/$22 Bookings: www.melbournefringe.com.au or 9660 9666.

Movies, DVDs With Jim Sherlock and Aaron Rourke
What’s Hot and What’s Not in Blu-Rays and DVDs
● The monstrously disappointing Godzilla, king of the monsters, roars his way on to DVD and Blu-ray, for a few minutes anyway. FILM: GODZILLA: Genre: Action/Adventure/Sci-Fi. Cast: Aaron Taylor-Johnson, Bryan Cranston, Ken Watanabe, David Strathairn. Year: 2014. Rating: M. Running Time: 123 Minutes. Format: DVD, BLU-RAY and BLU-RAY 3D. Stars: ** Verdict: The world's most famous monster is back, and this time he's pitted against two malevolent creatures who, bolstered by humanity's scientific arrogance, threaten our very existence. Beginning with pages ripped from other science fiction classics, it continues with an unending series of clichés taken up by banal dialogue and too many talking heads trying to justify their existence, until finally, almost two thirds into the film we finally see the full size creature, only to have him quickly and constantly disappear behind doors and buildings. When he is on screen the results are spectacular, however, his screen time is far too brief at around 11-12 minutes, and the results are ultimately a tiresome and mind numbing experience filled with hot air, an obtuse spectacle of monstrous proportions. FILM: SNOWPIERCER: Genre: Action/Sc-Fi/Thriller. Cast: Chris Evans, Jamie Bell, Tilda Swinton, John Hurt, Octavia Spencer. Year: 2013. Rating: MA15+. Running Time: 126 Minutes. Format: DVD and BLU-RAY. Stars: **½ Verdict: Sombre and bleak post apocalyptic tale set in a future where a failed climate-change experiment has killed off all life on the planet except for a lucky few who boarded the Snowpiercer, a train that travels around the globe. With-in the train a class system rules and rebellion erupts from the lowest order and they fight carriage by carriage from the rear to the front to confront the ruler. Fine cast all do well, the standout being Tinda Swinton in a delightfully quirky and over the top role. However, even though the tension builds intensely and there are moments to grasp and admire, its claustrophobic setting, bizarre set pieces, downbeat plot and muddled payoff make this an ultimately bumpy and disappointing ride. FILM: RIO 2: Genre: Animated/Family/Adventure/Comedy. Cast: Jesse Eisenberg, Anne Hathaway, Jamie Foxx, Andy Garcia. Year: 2014. Rating: G. Running Time: 101 Minutes. Format: DVD and BLU-RAY. Stars: **½ Verdict: Following on from the 2011 hit, and this time our fluffy furry feathered friends are hurled from Rio de Janeiro to the wilds of the Amazon jungle. As in the first adventure, it's all here, they're all back. Lots of colour, flashy musical numbers, standout voice talent, unending humour and eye popping animation. However, as far as the story goes it's pretty much a rehash of the first one, only this time more unfocused, and the dialogue an unrelenting ramble. The result is exhaustion to a point of boredom, unlike its predecessor. But that said, it has enough to offer as a solid and predictable entertaining diversion for the little ones, even though the adults may have wished to have chosen something else. FILM: THE LAST WAVE: Genre: Drama/Mystery/Thriller. Cast: Richard Chamberlain, Olivia Hamnett, David Gulpilil. Year: 1977. Rating: PG. Running Time: 106 Minutes. Format: DVD. Stars: ***½ Verdict: Director Peter Weir followed 1975's Picnic At Hanging Rock with this story of a Sydney lawyer who defends five Aborigines in a ritualized murder, and in the process strange and mysterious occurrences begin to happen including warnings of an impending Armageddon. The Last Wave is an intelligently written and superbly directed journey deep into the mystical heart of Australian myth. Richard Chamberlain is highly effective as the young lawyer as his experiences lead him to an unforgettably powerful, yet subtle, conclusion. Breathtaking cinematography by Russell Boyd (Gallipoli) and overflowing with atmospheric, chilling and haunting moments, this is a bewildering experience that transfixes the imagination with surreal imaginings, nightmarish paranoia and thought provoking results.

Easy guide to Fringe Festival Dreamers
● Daniel Keene and Ariette Taylor’s new play Dreamers premieres at fortyfivedownstairs on November 6. Photo: Jeff Busby ■ For the first time in over a decade, Fortyfivedownstairs is bringing together again the creative team of writer Daniel Keene and director Ariette Taylor, with designer Adrienne Chisholm, to present the Australian premiere of Dreamers from November 6 – 30. Mary Lou Jelbart, Fortyfivedownstairs founder and artistic director, says it’s difficult to express just how exciting it is that Daniel Keene and Ariette Taylor are again working together to present Dreamers in Australia. “The collaboration between these two talented artists produced some of the most unforgettable theatre I have ever seen,” says Jelbart. Keene and Taylor previously worked together in the highly successful Keene/Taylor Theatre Project that ran for five years from 1997 until 2002, and together presented 17 seasons of works with a total of 47 productions, including full length and short plays (four of the last five seasons were presented at fortyfivedownstairs in 2001 and 2002). Dreamers (originally commissioned for the French theatre company Tabula Rasa in 2009) is a play about the struggle against intolerance, racism and exclusion. The central character, Anne, is in her sixties. She begins a relationship with a much younger man of a different race and she must face an avalanche of prejudice and disapproval. Keene says that Dreamers also addresses the problem of isolation – particularly the lives of older people. “It is a view of the underside of contemporary Australian life,” says Keene. “Theatre is a place for complex social conversations, somewhere to broker understanding and to hopefully generate inspiration and discussion. We hope that Dreamers contributes to achieving those ends.” Season: November 6-30. Times: Tue-Sat 8pm, Sun 4pm Tickets: Full $45, Seniors $42.50, Concession $35, Preview $35. Venue: fortyfivedownstairs, 45 Flinders Lane, Melbourne Bookings: 9662 9966 or fortyfivedownstairs.com

● Dan Sultan will perform in the 2015 Riverboats Music Festival. ■ Bookings are now open for the fourth annual Riverboats Music Festival, set to return to the banks of the Murray River at Echuca-Moama from February 13 – 15, 2015. The 2015 line-up includes Dan Sultan, Sarah Blasko, Tex Perkins and The Dark Horses, The Whitlams, The Bamboos, Adalita, Mick Harvey, Diesel, FraserA. Gorman, Matt Walker and The Lost Ragas, Sal Kimber and The Rollin’ Wheel, Stella Angelico and The Switch, and Raised by Eagles. Festival Producer David Frazer said it is exciting to be bringing this spectacular line-up to the banks of the mighty Murray next February. “Riverboats provides festival-goers with an opportunity to experience a truly beautiful part of Australia without the queues, ticket prices and hassle of larger events,” says Frazer. “We are particularly proud of the fact Riverboats has remained boutique in both its size and philosophy, yet continues to attracts artists of the calibre of Dan Sultan, Sarah Blasko, Tex Perkins and the Whitlams.” From lunchtime until late each day, an eclectic mix of Australian icons and trailblazing up-and-comers take to the stage for the Murray River’s premier contemporary music festival. Riverboats’ captivating location lends a leisurely, laid-back vibe to the weekend’s festivities. Whether relaxing on picnic rugs or dancing under the dappled light of towering river red gums, the festival’s diverse crowd ranges from urban roadtrippers to country families and discerning musos. In keeping with the festival’s namesake, revellers can also experience a two-hour river cruise aboard a century-old paddle steamer. Whilst on-board the PS Pevensey, deluxe ticket holders will feast on a delicious local brunch accompanied by live music from Sal Kimber and The Rollin’ Wheel. The cruise takes place on Saturday February 14 from 11.30am to 1.30pm, returning to the historic Port of Echuca in time for the Saturday afternoon line-up. Just 2½ hours north of Melbourne, Echuca-Moama offers a broad range of accommodation options. From serviced apartments, houseboats, quality motels and bed and breakfasts, to backpackers, caravan and camping options, every budget is catered for. The Riverboats Music Festival is fast becoming a summer highlight for lovers of quality Australian music, keen to while away a weekend in the charming surrounds of this iconic regional event. Your Stars with Christina La Cross ARIES (MAR 21 - APR 20) There is an array of enticing offers coming your way today, but make sure you don't let down those you've made promises too. There may be more to lose than you realise if you do. TAURUS (APR 21 - MAY 21) Temptations in love are around and you would be wise to set your boundary lines so that you know you can be proud of your actions and words. Don't accept second best, not again. GEMINI (MAY 22 - JUNE 21) Don't take out money you can't afford to spend and, if necessary, leave your credit card at home. You'll only kick yourself when you see what you'll miss out on if you don't later this month. CANCER (JUNE 22 - JULY 23) An unresolved personal issue is still at the forefront of your mind. Don't waste any more time but deal with it head on. You have the answers you need. You just need to say that out loud. LEO (JULY 24 - AUG 23) You are going to be tempted to invest a large sum of money into something. Ensure the advice you are getting is of the professional variety. Paying for assistance can help you secure a long lasting deal. VIRGO (AUG 24 - SEPT 23) You have been losing sight of what and who is really important in your life but today Saturn gives you clarity and also shows you what needs to be done to heal a recent rift. LIBRA (SEPT 24 - OCT 23) You take on a more positive attitude and so problems which last week felt out of your control now feel within your power to conquer and challenge. New friendships prove lasting ones. SCORPIO (OCT 24 - NOV 22) There's much to be gained by giving your close ones a little more time and attention. A lot has been going on in the heavens recently and changes they've been through require a meeting of minds. SAGITTARIUS (NOV 23 - DEC 21) You're not feeling as determined as you were about a project which could actually help you to move into the area of your work you've longed for. Push the boundaries today. You can excel if you try. CAPRICORN (DEC 22 - JAN 20) Don't lead on those you're not interested in. It will only come back on you. A family member needs your support in a life change they seek. Make the effort to give it to them today. AQUARIUS (JAN 21 - FEB 19) There's a really social feel to your chart which should see you making many new and lasting friendships. Travelling out of your way for business can help seal a deal you want. PISCES (FEB 20 - MARCH 20) I know you feel as if a close one hasn't really been there for you, but the stars suggest their hands were tied more than you know. Give them a second chance and let them explain.

■ I am still under daily radiation treatment for the eye cancer. The specialist is pleased, but there is another eiught weeks of treatment due to continue after this week. ■ I haven’t been able to send the usual emails and have had Mark Kentwell’s help with this typing. ■ Thanks to all for your messages of support – they do help and humble me at the same time ■ I have enjoyed the Sydney Swans chairmans’ luncheon and two AFL official finals functions – all at ANZ Stadium. I have been absolutely spoilt by Mark performing his usual chauffeuring and Batman duties. Sue Max from ANZ Stadium helped me in providing a cart from the car-park to these functions and return which helps me immeasurably as I am not as sprightly on my pins as I used to be. ■ I would also like to thank Craig Willis for his official welcomes to the AFL luncheons, John Mangos for his at the Swans Chairmans Luncheon and to Gillon McLachlan for his acknowledgment. ■ My very special thanks go to Janene Thoma for her unending help, assistance and encouragement as we are now kindred spirits having a shared battle. ■ Congratulations to the AFL on the Finals series. In my vast experience I have never seen so many close and riveting finishes as we have had this
Harry Beitzel www.squidoo.com/harrybeitzel year – a real testament to all the AFL have done over the past decades to make our game stronger. The biggest week in Australian sport culminates this Saturday and I wish both the Sydney Swans and Hawthorn the best and hope for another fantastic finish. As I said to Mark Evans this Saturday: If we can make sure the umpires don’t get fooled by the players holding the ball to themselves in order to slow the game down and our players take a leaf from Sam Mitchels
book and do everything in their power to keep the ball moving, we will have a game without any equal. All we can hope for is a tough, honest and close game to finish off a great year, so lets make sure all involved are playing and adjudicating to the spirit of the best game in the world... I am Harry Beitzel and until next year, where I hope to be back on my feet and more reliable with the columns: That is my say!

Works underway at Sandown ■ Sandown Greyhound Racing Club continues to enhance their Springvale facility, with further renovation works currently underway. The western end of the grandstand is currently being renovated, with the old bookmakers ring being turned into a premium viewing and function area, which overlooks the track at the top of the home straight, near the gaming venue. An escalator will also be installed, along with a foyer leading into the extsting grandstand. Once completed, the new building will blend seamlessly into the existing facility, enhancing the race night experience for punters and also creating another fantastic option for non raceday functions. The new area should be operational for the club’s premier event, the $600,000 Melbourne Cup, on November 21.
Media rights ■ Sky Racing and Greyhound Racing Victoria have announced they will extend their media rights agreement. The agreement was first signed in 2011, and means Sky Racing will continue to provide live coverage of all greyhound race meetings from the 13 tracks in Victoria. Greyhound Racing Victoria CEO, Adam Wallish, priased his oganisation and Sky Racing for the strong relationship they have built over the years. "The extension to the existing broadcast agreement will be well received throughout the greyhound racing industry and recognises the key role Sky Racing plays in driving wa-

with Kyle Galley gering turnover on our sport,” Mr Wallish said. “Greyhound racing is becoming one of the best entertainment options for consumers. It is fast, exciting and consistent, which is what racing fans and punters enjoy. “GRV will continue to work closely with Sky Racing to examine innovative ways to present Victorian greyhound racing locally and internationally.” Although these kinds of media agreements usually grand the broadcaster exclusive vision rights, one wonders whether the code should also explore one of the many free-to-air channels available as well, as the short, direct advantage of greyhound racing telecasts would make for a good regular program to tap into a more mainstream audience.
Couple wins ■ Husband and wife Brooke and Jamie Ennis captured a two state feature race double on Sept. 14 with runners from their talented kennel.
Size Does Matter won the Healesville Cup in the afternoon, before My Bro Fabio collected the Canberra Cup that night. My Bro Fabio flew the flag for the locals in the nation’s capital, collecting a $25,000 winners purse, while the Healesville race carried a first prize cheque of $45,000, not a bad effort for one day’s work. “He (Size Does Matter) is a pretty classy greyhound and I think he’ll be a force to be reckoned with in the big races coming up such as the Geelong Cup and the Melbourne Cup,” Jamie Ennis said. “Canberra is a long way to go but My Bro Fabio needs runs on the board at group level if he is to be considered for (hand-picked) races such as the Topgun and the Silver Bullet. You can’t get in those races by winning Free For All races, you need to be winning group races,” he said. Jamie has been involved in the greyhound caper all his life, with his dad Garry also a successful trainer. The younger Ennis has also dabbled in the trotting caper on occasion over the years, and prepared the multiple race winner Barcode when he trained from the Ted Demmler stables at Carrum Downs. The Victorians also claimed another feature race success the night before, when Seymour trainer Peter Dapiran plundered the New South Wales riches with Zipping Maggie in the Chairman’s Cup at Sydney’s Wentworth Park.

Perfect passage ■ Bolinda trainer Brent Lilley enjoyed a super 2013-14 season and looks set to do similar this season, with smart Kiwi bred 6-Y-0 Earl/Sun Mist mare Pretty Sunday a most impressive winner of the Tom Tassie Rundle Trotters Mobile for T4 or better class over 2240 metres at Tabcorp Park Melton on Friday. Driven by Rod Petroff, Pretty Sunday enjoyed a perfect one/one passage after facing the open from gate four in the early stages, with the noted front runner Mister Gunsen (gate two) adopting his usual role at the head of affairs. Easing three wide on the final bend, Pretty Sunday ran home stylishly to record a 3.8 metre victory over Cardigan Boko, with Mister Gunsen holding down third..

Russell and Nathan Jack were successful with 4-Y-0 Mach Three/Hayley Franco mare Honey Maravu in the Hunter Rural Pace for C0 class over 1690 metres. Leading out from gate three, Honey Maravu was eased to allow Sheza Wildcard from outside the front line to take over after travelling a couple of hundred metres. Battled on strongly ■ Brett Bunfield combined with Gavin Lang to snare the Betta Home Living Pace for C0 class over 1690 metres with consistent Dream Away/Lombo Tit For Tat 4-Y-0 gelding Arrokeefe in a rate of 157.6. Pressing forward from gate four to take control, Arrowkeefe was rated to perfection by Lang who was cool calm and collected as challenges came from all directions on straightening, resulting in a 2.9 metre victory in advance of Village Me which led from gate three before taking a trail, with Givemeaspell battling on strongly to finish third after working forward from gate six to park in the open. New South Wales was well represented at the meeting, with Forestspider (Greg and Grant Forrest - Henty) landing the Alan McNeill Wholesale Confectionery Trotters Handicap for T1 or better class over 2190 metres and David Druitt (Morundah) the Schweppes 3-Y-0 Pace over 1690 metres with The Final Frontier. Gaths take Melton honours ■ Long Forest trainer Andy Gath and reinswoman wife Kate snared the two feature races at Tabcorp Park Melton on Friday with two very special horses Maximan and Elegant Image. Maximan, a Kiwi imported 6-Y-0 gelded son of Armbro Operative and Clifton Beauty, made it three from three on Australian soil when a brilliant victor of the $20,505 Preux Chevalier Free For All for M0 or better class over 2240 metres. Having his first outing since August 14, Maximan flew away from gate six to lead and although tested by the inform Exciteusinthecity for most of the journey, defied all challengers to score by a fighting neck margin over Cut ForAnAce (three back the markers) along the sprint lane, with Alchemy third after trailing the winner from the pole. The mile rate 1-55.5. Seven year old S J's Photo/Whitney Grace gelding Elegant Image has been in the top accolade of trotters over the past few years after being a Breeders Crown victor and also resumed after a lay off of five months to register an ultra impressive victory in the (Group 3) $20,275 Maori's Idol Trotters Free For All over 1720 metres (a race he has won previously). Driven for speed from gate five, Elegant Image had little difficulty in obtaining in taking the lead away from El Paco, leaving the hot favourite My High Expectations facing the open. Allowed to run, Elegant Image ran his rivals ragged in setting a new track record of 1-55.2 in defeating El Paco and Cold Sister. It was Elegant Image's 21st victory from only 54 race appearances.
Exciting ■ Hopetoun Park duo Ross and Greg Sugars were also winners at Melton when exciting Kiwi bred Bettors Delight/ Jingle Belle Rock 5-Y-0 gelding Bettor Rock On chalked up his 13th success in 37 race appearances (six from six in Australia) by taking the Sunbury United Cricket Club Pace for M1 & M2 class over 1720 metres. Thriller ■ There was a thrilling finish to the Peter McErvale Real Estate Trotters Mobile for T1 & T2 class over 2200 metres at Bray Raceway Ballarat on Tuesday, with Dunnstown trainer/driver David Murphy's Monica My Dear ($1.60) deadheating with Daylesford trainer Bob Conroy's Chipmont Lad ($24). Monica My Dear, a 7Y-0 home bred It Is I/ Biddy My Dear mare, was given the run of the race from the pole trailing the speedy The Dutchman (gate four), whereas 9-Y-0 Band Of Chips/ Kept Lady gelding Chipmont Lad spent most of the race three back in the moving line. Gaining an inside passage in the straight, Monica My Dear momentarily hit the front in the shadows of the post, but was swamped by Chipmont Lad which angled in-between runners resulting in the judge being unable tp separate the pair in a mile rate of 205.4. The favourite Nomistakingpegasus was a nose away in third place after racing in the open, with Lombo Scrutinizer (three back the markers) a nose away in fourth place only a half neck in advance of Mygreekkalesa (one/one).

Matthew turns 21 from gate six, with Phillips restraining him to possie five back in the running line, with the polemarker Dora Pepperell being given no respite by a hard pulling Bubba Macray (gate five). Easing three wide in the final circuit, Stunning Jasper was accommodated by William John coming out ahead of him from three back in the moving line, but going nowhere, resulting in Stunning Jasper having to go four wide approaching the final bend. When Dora Pepperell kicked away on turning, she appeared to have the race in her keeping until Stunning Jasper motored to the wire down the centre of the track to register a runaway 4.3 metre victory in a rate of 2-02.4. Ballan Road finished third after following the runner up.
Settled ■ Glen Park father and son - Bassie and Zac Steenhuis - combined to capture the National Tiles Trotters Mobile for T0 class over 2200 metres with much improved Great Success/Calder Image 4-Y-0 mare Racewaycalder in a rate of 2-05.2. Settling a long way back in the field after starting from gate two on the second row, Racewaycalder was sent forward three wide uncovered in the last lap and sustained a long run to blouse the pacemaker Drunken Maniac in the last couple of bounds to score by 1.1 metres, with Opia (one/ two) third. Since joining the Steenhuis stable, Racewaycalder has shown rapid improvement.
■ Likeable Matthew Caldow, son of Long Forest co-trainers John and Maree celebrated his 21st birthday in style at Melton on Friday with numerous family members and friends present. Matt actually reached this milestone on Monday - congratulations are extended to him.
Safe outside start ■ At Tabcorp Park Melton on Friday, Shepparton based Amanda Turnbull landed the Fast Forward Transport Pacers Handicap for M0 or better class over 2240 metres with smart 5-Y-0 Christian Cullen/Signnorina gelding Highview Conall. Driven by partner Nathan Jack, Highview Conall began safely from outside the front line to lead for most of the journey, coasting to the wire untouched in defeating Shakti Bromac (three back the markers) and Mista Styx which trailed the winner in a rate of 2-00.8. It was Highview Conall's 16th victory in 39 outings.
Trailed pacemaker ■ Terang's Matt Craven combined with cousin Jason Lee to land the Sportsmens Association Of Australia Pace for C3 & C4 class over 2200 metres at Bray Raceway Ballarat on Tuesday September 16 with talented five year old Faraway Man in a rate of 1-59.6. Despite racing in the open from gate three with the opening favourite Allies Mate (gate two) leading, Faraway Man was always a length off the pacemaker travelling under a tight rein. Creeping forward in the approach to the home turn, Faraway Man headed the leader halfway up the running and just held on to score by a half neck from No Bettertime (three back the markers) and I Am Louie which trailed the pacemaker.
Manning’s success ■ At Monday's Stawell fixture Great Western's Peter Manning was successful on two occasions during the afternoon - smart 4-Y-0 Village Jasper/ Mixed With ATwist gelding Mixedwithajasper taking the Grampians Estate Pace for C1 class over 1780 metres and 7-Y-0 Garymeade/Smokey Robyn gelding Hinault the Fosters Mensland Trotters Handicap for T0 or better class over 2175 metres. Mixedwithajasper was sent forward from outside the front line to end up with a beaut one/one trail following Dagati Image which shadowed the surprise poleline leader Pandoras Jet and when eased wide on turning, ran home best to gain the day by 3.1 metres in a rate of 1-59.8 over Elsu Prince (three wide last lap from mid-field), with Tres Homres third after trailing the pacemaker. Hinault coming from a 30 metre handicap settled well back in the field with Matt Craven sending him forward mid-race in an effort to park outside the leader A Stylish Jewel, however Tony Xiriha aboard a hard pulling Arctic Wolf had other ideas keeping him posted for the last half of the race. Eventually crossing Arctic Wolf prior to the home turn, Hinault outstayed his rivals to record a strong 1.9 metre victory in a rate of 2-07.6 over A Stylish Jewel and Keystone Blues one/one which switched to the sprint lane on straightening. - Len Baker
