Seniors urged to be scam savvy Seniors Briefs Company probe ■ A Melbourne hearing company has some questions to ask after it sent a promotional letter to a man last week, offering its services. The problem is that the gentleman died 45 years ago, and the letter was sent to his widow’s latest address, south-of-the-Yarra. The Melbourne woman, in her 90s, has had half-a-dozen address changes since the man died in 1966., the living north-of-theYarra. How did the company marry the man’s name, and the widow’s address ... after almost half-a-century? The woman in her 90s - who is obviously much alert that the hearing company - wants answers, and won’t be giving up until she gets them!

Heart attacks ■ The number of Aussies having or dying from repeat heart attacks is expected to rise by 40 per cent by the year 2020, according to an Access Economics report released yesterday (Tues.). The risk of death for women from repeat heart attacks is expected to escalate over next 10 years. Women are at lower risk of having an attack than men.

■ Fair Trading officials are reminding seniors to be wary of random phone calls, emails or letters they may receive requesting money or personal details as many of these are simply a scam. Brian Bauer says seniors should examine those issues that affect this group in the community. “From a consumer protection perspective, one issue that seems to be relevant to seniors is the prevalence of scams targeted towards them,” Mr Bauer said. “Sadly seniors are commonly the unsuspecting victims of common scams like the Nigerian money scam, inheritance scams and fake overseas lotteries. “Therefore it is timely to remind seniors to be wary of these types of scams which operate on the basis of appearing to be legitimate request but in reality is just a ploy to gain access to your hard earned savings or to obtain your identity to be used for fraudulent purposes.” Mr Bauer said the well-known computer virus con seems to be the scam of the moment with Fair Trading offices around Australia receiving many reports over the past few months. “In this scam, consumers receive a cold call from a person purporting to be from a reputable computer company,” Mr Bauer said. “The caller advises the person that they have a record showing their computer has been infected with a virus and by allowing remote access to their computer the company can run a scan to identify the virus. “Usually a fake scan is done on

OFFICIAL WARNING the computer with the caller informing the consumer the scan has indeed confirmed a virus however by purchasing a virus protection program over the phone they can install software to eradicate the virus. “The caller requests bank details to purchase the software but sadly the only thing that is removed is funds from the consumer’s bank account. In some cases a person’s identity can also be stolen from this type of scam.” Mr Bauer said many seniors may fall victim to this type of scam. “If you receive a call from a person saying your computer has a virus our advice is simply hang up. These callers are usually based overseas and are banking on you believing their fabricated story is the truth and in order to protect yourself you must give them access to your computer and buy their computer software,” Mr Bauer said. “If you have some concerns about the security of your computer take your machine to a reputable computer service centre or arrange for them to visit you in person at your home. “Better still ask a family member or trusted friend who may have some knowledge of computer security to install authentic virus and spyware protection. “Always be wary of any person who contacts you out of the blue whether it is via email, phone or letter requesting an upfront payment or personal details. “There is a very good chance their intentions are not as honourable as you may think,” Mr Bauer said.

Green Hearts Recyclers to launch

■ Melbourne’s newest not-for-profit organisation, Green Hearts Recyclers, will be launched on Monday (Dec. 5). Green Hearts will be launched at a function to be held at 6pm on Monday at Ormond Hall in Moubray St. Green Hearts Recyclers has been founded by Philip Sidebottom with three objectives: ■ Reduce the demand on landfill in Australia; ■ Provide individuals and businesses with quality, affordable recycled goods; and ■ Maximise fundraising efforts enabling it to continuously distribute funds to five nominated charities. Green Hearts Recyclers’ innovative process of recycling materials has made an immediate impact on the way companies are now choosing to discard unwanted products that will ultimately reduce land fill waste, whilst improving the quality of lives of others. Green Hearts Recyclers was founded by the Melbourne businessman following his approach to former St Kilda Rd business Hospira during their relocation process to the CBD. Mr Sidebottom asked if he could take their unwanted office furniture, telephones, cables and even stationery in the event they had no destination in mind. He was given the go ahead to sell their unwanted furniture and office equipment and within four weeks raised $23,000 - 100 per centof the proceeds going directly to The Think Pink Foundation. Philip’s basic concept of intercepting goods destined for land fill to recycle back into the community soon

● Philip Sidebottom, founder of the Green Hearts Recyclers foundation

caught the attention of other likedminded companies around Melbourne, inspiring him to take the concept to a new level. Philip is inundated with calls offering entire office strip outs, unwanted furniture and recently received twenty reconditioned PC’s donated by ARRB Group Ltd in Vermont South that will be delivered to the homes of underprivileged children to assist with their education and home studies. Green Hearts Recyclers’ five nominated charitable organisations will be officially announced at the launch on Mondayand representatives from each organisation will be introduced on the night. “With the positive response and support we have received whilst establishing Green Hearts Recyclers, I am thrilled to be able to officially launch in the lead-up to the holiday season as we have immediate plans to collect and recycle clothing in the new year and we are currently finalising the infrastructure to enable

Green Hearts to turn scrap metal into monetary value,” Mr Sidebottom said. Green Hearts Recyclers is seeking support from a variety of sources including; large and small commercial strip outs, individuals and corporate sponsorship. Green Hearts Recyclers will soon provide collection bins in a number of commercial and residential apartment buildings throughout the Melbourne area, for collection of small soft items such as clothing. Of recent years, Philip has been the driving force behind raising muchneeded funds for several Melbourne based projects, having raised in excess of $1.5 million in direct donations, goods and services to meet project objectives including: the development and completion of the multi-million dollar project; ‘The Think Pink Living Centre’on St Kilda Rd and the redevelopment of the outdoor dining, entertainment and children’s playground area for Parkville’s Ronald McDonald House. “I am absolutely passionate about making a positive difference in the lives of others. I’ve enjoyed working on various not-for-profit projects and believe Green Hearts Recyclers will appeal to like-minded companies and individuals who want to help improve the quality of lives of those facing health, financial or social challenges, whilst creating a sustainable environment for future generations.” For collection of recyclable goods or to learn the many ways you can support Green Heart Recyclers such as volunteering or corporate sponsorship, please call 9391 0048 or visit www.greenhearts.net.au

Special event

● Matthew Tennant ■ Musicians Matthew Tennant and Renae Mockler will perform the Green Hearts theme song, Wonderful You - Green Hearts Can Shine - at the launch of the organisation on Monday. The five nominated charities to be supported by Green Hearts Recyclers will be announced by organisation founder Philip Sidebottom. There will also be the official release of the Recycle Rush game application, donated to Green Hearts by Raptus Games. The function, being held at Melbourne’s Ormond Hall, will also feature announcement of major partnered sponsors. The Green Hearts Recyclers organisation is employing the slogan: “Green at heart - Charitable by nature”. - Mark Richardson

Luisa and the Chocolate Factory ■ If ever there’s a town that’s a ‘must-visit’ for romantics or chocoholics it’s Perugia in Italy. And if you’re both, you’ll find yourself in Seventh Heaven: One of the town’s biggest factories makes chocolates called Kisses – and there’s a street that’s so narrow it’s officially named Woman Kisser Lane, and whose tradition demands that you offer a kiss as you squeeze past anyone coming in the opposite direction. There’s no mention if you give them a chocolate afterwards. Perugia is the capital of Umbria about halfway between Rome and Florence and it’s Perugina chocolate factory makes the world-famous chocolates called Baci – Italian for ‘kisses’. As anyone with a sweet tooth knows, these tasty little bundles of chocolate incorporate nougat and ground hazelnuts, and are then topped with a whole hazelnut, covered with another coating of chocolate, and finally wrapped in foil that carries an expression of love in a half-dozen or more languages. Luisa Spagnoli started the Perugina chocolate factory with fellow confectioner Giovanni Buitoni in 1907 when she was 30 years old. Locals say the pair fancied each other and initially exchanged clandestine messages through their own handmade chocolates – but historians scotch that as fanciful urban myth. The factory started with a handfull of workers, but today is owned by the multi-national Nestlé company

Fling with cool Highlander ■ NSW’s Southern Highland Wines has released a crackajack 2011 Oldbury Reserve Sauvignon Blanc that’s very much in the style of its 2009 – the most-awarded wine in the company’s young eight-year winemaking history. Located in picturesque high-altitude and cool-climate country outside the little hamlet of Sutton Forest, Southern Highland Wines produces a credible eight white varietals and styles, and five reds, under their S H W and Oldbury labels, the latter crafted from the best fruit from their 40ha of vineyards. Winemaker Dominic Bosch used skin contact, cold maceration and low temperature fermentation to create the 2011 Oldbury Sauvignon Blanc, that exudes a stylish personality with nice varietal lychee, kiwi fruit, thyme, lemongrass, lime and asparagus aromas that follow through with a smooth seamlessness on the palate. If you’re into seafood, match this one with banana prawns, oysters or pan-fried snapper, or try it with a herbed pork casserole, Japanese dishes or blue cheese; pay $28. If you have trouble finding it locally, it can be ordered online through www.shw.com.au, with freight costs additional. Sutton Forest is 1.5hrs drive from Sydney or Canberra; SHW’s Cellar Door is open daily 10am-5pm and their restaurant for lunch Thursday to Monday.

One For Lunch ■ Fans of Evans & Tate will know how the company’s WA Margaret River vineyards enjoyed ideal vintages from 2007 to 2009, and now the just-released 2010 Evans & Tate Classic Shiraz Cabernet reflects a fourth great vintage that year too, with warm weather and low rainfall meaning low fruit yields that offered-up outstanding flavour ripeness and tannins. At $19.99 this is a wine with a beautiful palate of forward Shiraz black-fruit flavours, making for an ideal match with barbecued beef ribs or grilled tuna.

that ships its chocolates, candies and after-dinner mints around the world. Free tours of the factory, in the Perugian suburb of San Sisto are held in specific languages daily, and include a visit to the Museum of Chocolate, a video on how chocolate is made, a guided walk along the production line, and a shop that sells the full range of chocolates, candies, nougat and biscotti, T-shirts and memorabilia. And, yes, for chocoholics the guides offer free samples from silver trays at different points throughout the tour. And possibly the best time to visit Perugia is in October when the annual nine-day EuroChocolate Festival is held. But be prepared for the crowds: it attracts more than one million tourists, and is one of the largest chocolate festivals in the world, with visitors able to buy such delights as chocolate-covered bananas, chocolate liqueur, chocolate moulds, and giant bricks of chocolate. And wallow in a spa-full of chocolate. But Luisa Spagnoli, the woman whose talents spawned the town’s fame, didn’t stop at just chocolates. She turned her business acumen to the breeding of angora rabbits and in 1928 became the first person in the world to turn the soft, silky fur into shawls, boleros and fashion garments under the name l’Angora Spagnoli. Today some 100 Luisa Spagnoli fashion stores are scattered around the world, with headquarters firmly entrenched in Perugia. The townsfolk are also proud that it was here that the famous Renaissance painter Raphael learned his trade. He was apprenticed to another master Perigino (who was born Pietro Vannucci, but took the name of the town where he grew up). Art lovers flock to Perugia’s Exchange Guild to see one of the bestpreserved Renaissance frescos in Italy, painted between 1498 and 1500 by Perigino and some of his students including the young Raphael. Art historians attribute the figure of Fortitude, seated on a cloud, as the work of Raphael – who, incidentally, the locals delight in telling visitors died at an early age of 37 “from an overindulgence in sex.” Another must for anyone interested in art is a visit to the town’s Franciscan Church to see a copy of Raphael’s painting Entombment of Christ. The original caught the eye of Cardinal Scipione Borghese, a wealthy and powerful nephew of Pope Paul V, while he was on a visit to Perugia in 1607. The painting wasn’t for sale but the Cardinal had some men “acquire it,” and the original remains to this day in the Borghese museum in Rome. And if you take a visit to Perugia, you just simply can’t miss a visit to Vicolo Baciadonne (Woman Kisser Lane.) But just remember – before you head along the half-metre wide laneway, make sure you check who is coming the other way, and whether or not you would enjoy the traditional greeting. Carolinasusi Italian Tours have 3week escorted tours to Umbria and Tuscany every northern Spring and Autumn. Details (07) 3396 8652, (07) 3262 6332 or www.carolinasusi.com.au - David Ellis
