KEITH McGOWAN HONOURED Mike Walsh Fellowships announced

Koorie gala concert on Dec. 5 ● Bill Armstrong with Marcus Herman ■ The Australian recording industry said ‘thanks’ to retired 3AW Overnighters broadcaster Keith McGowan at a presentation at Toorak this week. A&R man Bill Duff made the presentation, and those present included recording industry professional Bill Armstrong, longtime associate Marcus Herman, and retailers Max Robenstone of Discurio, and Kenn Clark of Katie’s at Mount Waverley. Marcus Herman traced Keith’s involvement back to his teenage years, when Planet Records were located at the Eastern Market, on the Southern Cross Hotel site. Max Robenstone said that interest in a title by Keith McGowan, sharing in its listeners, had the potential to boost CD sales by thousands of units.

● Naomi Edwards ■ Two Victorian graduates are among seven lucky young theatre practitioners are heading overseas to hone their skills thanks to winning Mike Walsh Fellowships. Victorian College of theArts graduates Naomi Edwards and Jenny Ellis join NIDA's Shane Jones, Ailsa Paterson and Tirion Rodwell, along with Tim Walter and Stephen Wheat from the WesternAustralianAcademy of Performing Arts. In the past the fellowships were an all-Sydney affair, focusing on NIDA graduates, but with Mike Walsh owning Melbourne's Her Majesty's Theatre, he decided to extend eligibility for the fellowships to graduates from the VCA and WAAPA. The annual awards are worth $50,000, which should be a big help to our emerging theatre practitioners, as they go overseas to further their knowledge and experience before returning home to Australia. Victoria's Naomi Edwards is already well known as a theatre director, having directed Victorian Opera's inaugural production of Noye's Fludde which launched the state opera company in 2006, and the contemporary opera How To Kill Your Husband And Other Handy Household Hints for Victorian Opera earlier this year. - Julie Houghton

Clough Chroisters present Messiah ■ The Clough Choristers will be presenting their annual performance of Handel's muchloved Messiah at Sacred Heart Church, 116 Cotham Road, Kew, at 2pm on Saturday December 3, Conducted by Savoy Opera Company's recently retired long time conductor, Brian Clough, it features excellent soloists, some of whom have also been Savoy Opera principals. Fresh from her winning performance as Yum Yum in Savoy Opera's The Mikado, Lucinda Fitzmaurice will be ● Lucinda Fitzmaurice the soprano soloist in this Messiah. Taking to the platform alongside her are fine mezzo soprano Ursula Paez Zapata, silver voiced tenor David Campbell and the bass role will be well filled by Oliver Mann, currently popping up in the chorus of Opera Australia's La Traviata. The Clough Choristers' chorus and orchestra will be conducted by Brian Clough. Tickets are $25, concession $20 and Under 12s $10 and can be booked on 9458 1797. - Julie Houghton

● Wendy Stapleton ■ The Koorie Heritage Trust presents its fundraising Gala Concert For Youth at the Athenaeum Theatre, Melbourne on Monday, December 5 at 7.00pm. The event features a showcase of indigenous and nonindigenous visual and performing arts and artists – ranging from stand-up comedy, cabaret, music and dance performances. Performers include comedians Rod Quantock and Dave Callan, musician Deborah Conway, Aria Award-winning singer/songwriter Dan Sultan, Peter Rotumah, Lindsay Field (John Farnham Band), Paul Norton, Wendy Stapleton, Noel Tovey, Constantina Bush and The Bushettes, burlesque performers Lyra la Belle and Radha Leigh, James Henry and The Sunshine Sisters. The Koorie Heritage Trust aims to bridge the cultural gap between Koories and non-Koories by generating greater awareness and understanding. In the indigenous community, an understanding of and connection to one’s culture and country is an essential part of each individual’s physical and spiritual growth and maturity. Unfortunately for Aboriginal Australians, time has seen a growing distance between today’s Indigenous youths and their connection to their culture and heritage – with many young Aborigines now having limited or no understanding of their cultural heritage. As a means of counteracting this issue and in an effort to bridge the cultural gap, the Trust places particular emphasis on its effort to educate Koorie youths about their country and culture. Gala Project Manager Kamahi Djordon King says, “It is our aim that through this event the Trust will be able to expose the wider Australian community to the great work they are doing, with the proceeds being used to ensure the longevity and future development of these programs.” Performance: Monday, December 5 from 7.00pm9.00pm Venue: Athenaeum Theatre, 188 Collins Street, Melbourne. Tickets: Premium $100 (middle section of the front two rows of the Dress Circle), Single ticket $55. Bookings: 9650 1500 or 132 849 www.ticketek.com.au - Cheryl Threadgold

● Noel Crowe ■ Noel Crowe has “stepped down” as CEO of Radio Sport National after 16 years. Michael Harms will assume the Role of Executive Chairman of Radio Sport National until a new General Manager is appointed. Harms will be working alongside Denis Stirton who will take on more of the dayto- day management responsibilities. Harms’s statement, alte last week, was curious. It concentrated heavily on sending a message that the station, once known as 3UZ, was not for sale by its owners, the Victorian racing industry. “It should be noted that the racing industry in Victoria has a track record of securing IP assets rather than divesting them.” Why would it be necessary to say that in a press release farewelling a CEO?

Melbourne credentials ■ Noel Crowe’s sudden departure from Radio Sport National 927 came in a week where a highly crtical item was fed to The Age newspaper. Crowe , a former Balwyn High and St Kevin’s boy, has strong Melbourne radio, having been a former Sales Manager at 3AW and 3DB.

Crowe had also been a Manager at 3MP, when it was owned by Wesgo, and operated as a Mornington Peninsula station. Age reporter Patrick Bartley said Radio Sport National was losing between $3.2 million and $4.5 million per year. He said RSN had lost $20 million over the past five years. “Some inisders clkaim that a full audit of the business is the only way out for Radio Sport National,” he said.

Unattributed ■ Bartley quoted an unnamed

“media consultant” criticising the pay rates offered to RSN staff. “Here is a station that has really no audience paying staff as though they were as powerful as Alan Jones in Sydney.

“The rates of pay for fulltime and casual people on the station is so out of line with all other stations .... no wonder you have some very, very nervous board members,” the anonymous conusltant said.

More Monkees Music 3XY

● This photo of the 1420 3XY Monkee-mobile has proved a hit of the internet. Karen Field says her father’s best mate, Dean Reynolds, brought the Kombi van to their street. Karen collected all the autographs of the 1960s music group comprising Micky Dolenz, Davy Jones, Peter Tork, and Michael Nesmith. Melbourne radio man Mike Menner commented: “I remember spending many hours in the hotel where the Monkees were staying in St Kilda. We set up a studio in one of the rooms a floor below the Monkees floor, with Laurie Bennett (Lobo), Johnny Young, and I forget who else was there, but my lips remain closed on what else went on.” Melbourne

Nightline ‘NANNI’ DENISE QUITS Radio Fun

Veritas Melbourne’s Best TV-Radio Critic

● Bruce Mansfield and Philip Brady ■ There was little extra room for egos in the 3AW studios when Bruce Mansfield and Philip Brady, with Thursday guest John Blackman, spoke with a gushing Donna Demaio and Megan Gale about the model’s new swimwear range.

● Bruce, Blackers and Philip in the studio ■ Bruce and Phil raised the topic of coincidences in a program this past week. Listener Gigi Hellmuth of Burwood, who doubles as the program’s unpaid ‘head prefect’ at its Facebook website, said: “Coincidence : In the 1980s I introduced my mother to my boyfriend and later she remarked that he seemed familiar - found out some time later - Mum had met his father in the mid 1950s when he was selling encycopedia door to door!” ■ The Nightline program has a listener in New York. Jacqueline Healy listens via the 3AW internet website. She last week celebrated Thanksgiving Day, which is held on the fourth Thursday in November, in the US. Jackie shared a week’s worth of ● Jackie Healy thanksgiving messages on her Facebook page. Thanksgiving Day is followed by ‘Black Friday’, which is the busiest retail day of the year in America, when people do much of their Christmas shopping. It is so named because this is when many business people go ‘into the black’ for the first time for the year.

● Denise Drysdale ■ ‘Nanni’ Denise Drysdale has quitThe Circle on Friday, with simultaneous news that she had became a grandmother for the first time. Bodhi arrived healthy, and good wishes have been extended to Rob, Jamie, Bohdi and Uncle Peter. ■ Denise will appear with Ernie Sigley this Sunday (Dec. 4) at a Christmas lunch and show the Manningham Club, Bulleen. $28 per person, pre-paid. Phone: 9850 2777.

Called in sick ... ■ It is only Week 19 in their Melbourne Overnight run, but both Andrew McLaren and producer Mark Petkovic phoned in sick to their 3AW program this week, Simon Owens told his Facebook followers this week. Standing in at late notice for the pair who could not go to air, Simon told Facebookers: “I'm back at midnight again. Andrew has lost his voice and Mark has put his back out.”

The Bolt Retort

Light on humour, but heavy on fake laughs ● Jo Hall

■ Congratulations to Channel 31 and producer Shannon Marinko on The Bolt Retort. The five-minute satirical piece is a sharp spoof on Andrew Bolt, the Herald Sun columnist who commenced his own Sunday program on the Ten Network this year. No one would know, but Bolt also appears on MTR.

Observer Special Reader Offer

CD: Matthew Field ‘Love Story’ $20 including postage and handling ● Luke Holt ■ If contrived humour, and fake laughs are your thing, then you will get bucketloads with the Luke And Lucy radio show on Light 89.9 FM. The pair front the weekday breakfast session (6am-9am). Be prepared to put off your Corn Flakes. Luke Holt is partnered with Lucy Holmes, who lists an appearance on Mornings With Kerri-Anne as one of her career highlights. Explains it all, deosn’t it?

ACMA acts on signal ■ The Australian Communications and Media Authority looks set to allow 3MP/MTR point a stronger signal towards the Melbourne metropolitan area, particularly the northern and western suburbs. Licence holder, Pacfic Star Network, which operates the station in a joint venture with Macquarie Radio Network, asked to change the Rowville transmitter, so that the signal is not concentrated on the Mornington Peninsula. Macquarie Radio Network lost $6.2 million on MTR 1377 in 15 months. MRN Chairman Russell Tate hopes the station to be operating “at or near break even” by June 30 next year.

Alicia Gorey will be taking over on Saturdays and Sundays, and single mum, Jo, 53, will do news updates during the week, as well as fill-in work. Jo would be back in a heartbeat, if the weekday anchor position of Peter Hitchener, 65, became available. Nine bosses shouldn’t forget ... the former Waverley Gazette reporter has a lot of goodwill around this town. It’s an incredible news room at Nine’s Docklands headquarters. Don’t forget Tony Jones or Brett McLeod either!

What’s Hot and What’s Not

Top 10 Lists

FILM: RISE OF THE PLANET OF THE APES: Genre: Drama/Science Fiction/Action/Thriller. Cast: James Franco, Andy Serkis, Freida Pinto. Year: 2011. Rating: M. Running Time: 105 Minutes. Format: DVD. Stars: ***1/2 Verdict: During experiments to find a cure for Alzheimer's disease, a genetically-enhanced chimpanzee uses its greater intelligence to lead other apes to freedom. This reimagining of the 1968 classic Planet of the Apes and two of the subsequent sequels is a knockout, an intelligently written, well paced, exciting and thrilling edge-of-your-seat adventure. Great use of CGI (Computer Generated Images) and watch out for some fun references to the original Apes films. A special mention must go to the great Andy Serkis for his stunning motion captured performance in bringing chief protagonist Caesar to life. Comparable Recommendations: The Planet of the Apes (1968), Escape from the Planet of the Apes, Conquest of the Planet of the Apes, Battle for the Planet of the Apes.

THE AUSTRALIAN BOX OFFICE TOP TEN: 1. THE TWILIGHT SAGA: BREAKING DAWN - PART 1. 2. MONEYBALL. 3. IN TIME. 4. MIDNIGHT IN PARIS. 5. I DON'T KNOW HOW SHE DOES IT. 6. THE DEBT. 7. DRIVE. 8. PARANORMAL ACTIVITY 3. 9. SHARK NIGHT 3D. 10. CONTAGION.

FILM: CAPTAIN AMERICA - THE FIRST AVENGER: Genre: Action/Science Fiction/Adventure. Cast: Chris Evans, Hugo Weaving, Stanley Tucci, Tommy Lee Jones. Year: 2011. Rating: M. Running Time: 119 Minutes. Format: DVD and BLU-RAY. Stars: **1/2 Verdict: Another week, another comic book hero on the screen. If you know the comic, you'll know the story, but here it is anyway: after being deemed unfit for military service a young man volunteers for a top secret research project that turns him into Captain America, a superhero dedicated to defending America's flag waving ideals. Nothing all that fresh here, but it saving grace is that it does have its tongue firmly in its cheek, good special effects and cheesy acting make it a fairly painless romp that the older kids will no doubt love, but the adults may experience a strong sense of déjà vu. And a word of advice, don't turn off before the end credits are over. Comparable Recommendations: Thor, Iron Man 1 & 2, The Incredible Hulk. FILM: HANNA: Genre: Thriller/Mystery/Action. Cast: Saoirse Ronan, Eric Bana, Cate Blanchett. Year: 2011. Rating: TBC. Running Time: 111 Minutes. Format: DVD and BLU-RAY. Stars: *** Verdict: The compelling story of a 16-year-old raised by her father to be the perfect assassin and who is dispatched on a mission across Europe, but hunted and tracked by a ruthless intelligence agent and her operatives. Strong performances and excellent locations give this a nice sharp edge to its dark and thrilling premise, the hugely talented Cate Blanchett is a stand-out as the cold and calculated agent out to get the young assassin, but she comes up against the best in more ways than one, if you liked any of those recommended below then you should get more than a kick out of this one. Comparable Recommendations: Leon: The Professional, Kick-Ass, Salt, La Femme Nikita. FILM: BREAKFAST AT TIFFANY'S - 50th Anniversary Special Edition: Genre: Comedy/Romance/Drama. Cast: Audrey Hepburn, George Peppard, Patricia Neal. Year: 1961. Rating: PG. Running Time: 115 Minutes. Format: DVD and BLU-RAY. Stars: ***1/2 Verdict: The enchanting story of Holly Golightly, a young New York socialite who becomes interested in a young man who has moved into her apartment building hits DVD again and Blu-ray for the first time in this delightful 50th anniversary special edition. From the opening sequence with the stunningly beautiful and irreplaceable Audrey Hepburn on the empty streets of New York outside Tiffany's, to the haunting sound of Moon River by the great Henry Mancini, director Blake Edwards' screen adaptation of Truman Capote's celebrated novella will grab you by the heart and never let go. Sadly, the only major flaw is the embarrassingly bad performance by Mickey Rooney as the landlord, but all is forgiven just to see a never more beautiful and charismatic Audrey Hepburn in one of her and cinemas most iconic roles. Comparable Recommendations: The Apartment, Two for the Road, Roman Holiday, Sabrina. FILM: THE GUNS OF NAVARONE: Genre: Action/Adventure/War. Cast: David Niven, Gregory Peck, Anthony Quinn, Stanley Baker. Year: 1961. Rating: PG. Running Time: 158 Minutes. Format: DVD and BLU-RAY. Stars: ***1/2 Verdict: The big rousing WWII spectacle of a British team who are sent to heavily occupied Greek territory to destroy the massive German gun emplacement that commands a key sea channel, one of the great boysown Saturday matinee adventures ever filmed, based on the best-selling novel by Alistair MacLean. The cast may seem a bit too old to be taking on the Nazi's single handed and the special effects may be a bit lame compared to today, but it's one of those great epic big screen adventures from Hollywood and an era that all that mattered was excitement and entertainment, and this one won't disappoint! And a small word of advice, avoid the 1978 sequel. Comparable Recommendations: Where Eagles Dare, Ice Station Zebra, The Dirty Dozen, The Wild Geese, The Bridge On The River Kwai, Von Ryan's Express, The Dam Busters.

● Actress Angela Bettis

Attack The Block ■ (MA). 87 minutes. Opens in selected cinemas on December 1. Funny and exciting in about equal measure, Attack The Block is the kind of genuinely entertaining popcorn movie that has largely been missing from cinemas for the past ten-to-fifteen years. Set in a run-down, crime-infested area of London, the film opens with a teen gang mugging intern nurse Sam (Jodie Whittaker), who is walking home after finishing a long shift. The crime-in-progress is interrupted when something falls from the sky and crashes into the car parked next to them. What jumps out at gang leader Moses (John Boyega) is definitely not from this world, and before they know it other, much-more dangerous lifeforms start landing nearby, and everyone must team up to stop this ferocious enemy, using the apartment block that they live in as a fort. Writer/director Joe Cornish has blended a number of genres with style, skill, and humour, and manages that difficult task of deftly combining comedy and suspense, and references a number of films (Harry Brown / An American Werewolf In London / Critters) to help create an atmosphere that is both involving and highly entertaining. The film is very well-made, with appropriately gritty cinematography by Tom Townend, fluid editing by Jonathan Amos, and effective CGI effects by Double Negative. There is also a nicely old-fashioned score by Steven Price. The young cast all acquit themselves well, and manages to make their streetwise characters likeable and believable. In fact this young-group-vs-monsters film works much better than the over-hyped (and over-rated) hit Super 8. Attack The Block is the kind of crowd-pleaser that actually does please, one that people don't have to dismiss as a guilty pleasure to justify their positive feelings toward it. Simply put, Attack The Block is great fun, and deserves to be embraced by a large audience. RATING - ****

The Woman ■ (R). 108 minutes. Available to rent on DVD on November 30. After its very low-key cinema release, The Woman now arrives on DVD, and this intense, thought-provoking thriller will leave a deep impression on anyone who sees it. The story centres on the Cleeks, a seemingly normal family who live a happy life. Chris Cleek (Sean

Bridgers) is the bread-winner, working at a realty firm and respected by those around him. His wife Belle (Angela Bettis) is a stay-at-home mother who cooks, cleans, and looks after their three children, Peggy (Lauren Ashley Carter), Brian (Zach Rand), both in their teens, and Darlin' (Shyla Molhusen), who is around five years of age. They live in a nice house in a scenic location on the outskirts of town, and everything seems to be going fine. Trouble appears to start when Chris, while hunting in the nearby woods, finds a young woman (Pollyanna McIntosh) who is totally feral, and has obviously grown up in the wild. Capturing her and chaining her up in a storage basement, Chris, along with the rest of the family, decide to 'civilise' the woman, making her one of them. The Woman is a savage film, unflinchingly delving into the darkest aspects of human nature, as well as looking in a highly confrontational manner at the social, psychological, and physical relationship between men and women. Performances are deceptively strong. Bridgers, who seems to be deliberately channelling Will Ferrell's goofy persona, is utterly unnerving as Chris, and handles the changes in Chris's character with a skillful naturalism. It's great to see Angela Bettis back on screen (after her amazing performance in the critically-acclaimed May), and once again she is excellent as the oppressed Belle. Carter, Rand, and Molhusen are all convincing as the children. McIntosh is extraordinary as the title character, completely immersing herself as someone who is both frightening and tragic. Co-writer / director Lucky McKee, who burst onto the film scene with the terrific May (2002) but has been relatively quiet since with the films The Woods (2005), Red (2008), and the Masters Of Horror TV episode Sick Girl, returns with the kind of dark, inventive energy that made him a filmmaker to watch nearly 10 years ago. Teaming up with controversial author Jack Ketchum (The Lost / Girl Next Door / Red), they have approached this material (based on their novel) in a refreshingly uninhabited way, making the audience think about what they are watching, and the kind of scary, outdated morals that is making up part of our society. The Woman is provocative, uncomfortable, and at-times graphic viewing, one that will not only divide audience opinion, but will make them talk about what they've seen well after the end credits have finished. RATING - ****1/2 - Aaron Rourke

REVIEW: JIGSAWS ■ The Basin Theatre Group presents Jigsaws by Jennifer Rogers until December 4 at their delightful theatre in Doongalla Road, The Basin. This contemporary play starts on Christmas Day in the lounge room of a home in Perth, Western Australia. We share just over one year in the lives of three generations of one family - cleverly represented metaphorically as a jigsaw puzzle - some pieces fit in nicely, while others can be a little more difficult. Under the direction of Joe Tuppenney, the all-female cast includes Sonya Wilson as a formidable Sylvia, Isobel McGibbon as her bubbly sister Pat and Tracey Stride and Kylie Grays who both deliver entertaining performances as the family's younger generation. Particular congratulations to Janet West, who sensitively portrays the senior member of the family, Emma, and at 72 is making her stage debut. This is a beautifully presented play, with Joe Tuppenney's homely set complimenting the actors' fine, believable performances. The audience becomes immersed in the depiction of the foibles, ups and downs, but most importantly the underlying love, recognisable in most families. EVERY DRAFT PLAYER, EVERY CLUB

■ I was privileged to be invited by David Matthews and Kevin Sheedy to last Thursday night’s AFL Draft at Sydney’s Olympic Park Sports Centre and my thanks to AFL’s Nick Johnston and GWS Tiffany Wass for following through with all the security passes. It was a ‘GWS Night of Nights’ just as last year’s NAB Draft was all about the Gold Coast Suns. I had picked my 14 players from what I thought were the ‘Top 20’based on what I read and saw on Foxtel’s coverage of the elite States and Clubs U/age competitions. And from the pre-draft publicity build-up. I closely follow the AFL’s National Talent Manager Kevin Sheehan’s predictions of his top 30 draftees. After all he has followed these kids development from the U14s onwards. My interest centred on GWS and Sydney Swans picks. I wanted GWS to get ruckman Billy Longer (he went to Brisbane Lions at Pick 8) and the Swans to take local Western Sydney (Quakers Hill) 18-years boy Jack Dimery. Who is Jack Dimery? He has played a couple of games as a tall winger for GWS earlier this year in the pre-season NAB Cup but GWS has such a wealth of young talent with all their priority picks he was not wanted. It would have created plenty of publicity for the Swans to pinch young Dimery from GWS as he is not only a Westie by birth, played his junior AFL football at Quakers Hill school, but also must rank as the best credentialed teenager in the AFL Sydney/ACT League. He already has three Senior Sydney Football League Premiership Flags to his credit playing for East Coast Eagles as a midfielder at 16/17 and this season 18 years and he also won the Medal for BOG in the Grand Final. It will be scandalous if a team pick him as a ‘rookie’ listed player under the noses of the Swans and GWS. We have all the technology and recruiting talent but if you are a kid not in an AFL State or Territory you are battling uphill. I’d pick him for sure. Maybe he alone could boost the local talent to greater deeds. Only one NSW lad made the Draft at Pick 67 – Jarrod Witts for Collingwood, signed up under the AFL School Scholarship Promotion. He now attends the University of NSW. Jarrod is 18 years, 209cm, 113kgs and has the potential to be a champion ruckman having already proved to be a schoolboy basketball star. Explain to me how this could happen? It would be sensible to encourage local talent. I would have picked him for GWS so the locals could cheer on their local hero. Sheedy’s after-Draft function speech was brilliant. Not a note in sight he mesmerised the audience with his continual references to the history of the area of Greater Western Sydney, how his team and players will also contribute to grow the AFL’s part in this history and the locals will play their part in the history of their own team to support. He thanked the sterling contribution of recently departed CEO Dale Holmes which made it clear to everyone present he shall not countenance rumour mongering or criticism of his former boss.

Harry Beitzel www.squidoo.com/harrybeitzel I was so proud of him that he was prepared to stand-up and be counted. So too were others. Sheeds ‘picks and sticks’. It was a long day for him as he was unexpectedly called at lunchtime to drive to The Hunter on an urgent personal matter and still get back to the Draft by 5.30pm. Soon he can take a week’s break and recharge the batteries!

■ AFL General Manager Football Operations Adrian Anderson wishes to address a number of recent media reports concerning the GWS Giants and the AFL's rules relating to the lodgement of documents and contracts. Mr Anderson wishes to state clearly for the record that the GWS Giants have not breached any AFL Player Rules or AFL Player Regulations relating to the timing of the lodgement of documents and contracts. Mr Anderson said this applied to both football and marketing contracts and the GWS Giants had met all deadlines inside the timeframes and extensions allowed to all clubs under the competition rules. - Harry Beitzel

Observer Racing running in the race. He was fined $1000 which is due on or before December 31.

Appeal by Kelly ■ Apprentice jockey Jye McNeil hasn't had any shortage of role models as he embarked on a career that reached raceriding stage at Swan Hill on Sunday. The 16-year-old is indentured to Mansfield master Gerald Egan, the man who has moulded the careers of many top jockeys including Black Caviar's regular rider and reigning Scobie Breasley Medallist Luke Nolen and multiple Group 1-winning pilot Nick Hall. But it is a long-retired star of yesteryear who has had arguably the biggest impact on the son of Kerang trainer Darryl McNeil pursuing a career in the saddle. Alan Trevena, former rider of immortal filly Surround, is a close friend of the McNeil family and had a hand in first encouraging Jye to be a jockey and then helping him find his way to Egan's. “He's played a huge part and he was actually the one that got me in with Gerald,” McNeil said of Trevena. “When Al was at home one day I told mum how I wanted to be a jockey and she asked for tips for what to do and he just said if it was something really I wanted to do, to let me go and we'd see how it pans out. “After that we saw an article on Gerald in Inside Racing and we got Al to ring him up, because he knew him, and he got me in. So I came over and once I first came over I just kept coming back and now I'm full time and ready to kick off.” McNeil realised his dream of riding in a race when he partnered Lago Delight mare Ski Lago for local trainer Jane Matheson in the Owen Connick Builders Maiden Plate (1200m), the second event on the sevenrace Swan Hill card.

Ski Lago is partowned by McNeil's father's cousin Greg McNeil among other members of the McNeil clan and Jye was thrilled to gain approval to ride in races in time to have his first ride for a family member. “The horse had already been entered and I didn't know I was going to be riding until Monday, I only got my licence on Monday, so after I saw it was entered I rang Greg up and he said it was OK for me to jump on her,” he said. “It's great.” All four of McNeil's rides at Swan Hill were for trainers who have had a hand in his development via allowing him to ride work or in jumpouts. Swan Hill trainers Gavin Murphy and Con Kelly provided McNeil with his second and third rides, Nowhere To Go (Race 4) and Master Houdini (Race 6), while he rode Bio-diversity for Kerang horseman Peter Williams in the final event. “It's good to finally have a ride for all of them because they've always been there to support me,” McNeil said. “I've always wanted to have my first ride around home somewhere, so that was good to do it at Swan Hill.”

Star of the West ■ The Warrnambool Racing Club has announced a lucrative incentive for trainers to target three feature Cups at the South West track over summer. To herald the return of the Port Fairy IGA Port Fairy Cup, the Warrnambool Racing Club, in conjunction with the Woodford Racing Club and the Star of the West Hotel in Port Fairy, are looking to find The

week handicapper that they're looking for a race of three for. “The bonus is there for the taking and we're looking forward to crowning the inaugural ‘Star of the West' this summer.”

■ The Racing Appeals and Disciplinary Board was due to hear an appeal by licensed trainer Terry Kelly at 10.30am yesterday (Tues.) as the Observer went to press. Mr Kelly has appealed against both the decision of Racing Victoria Stewards and severity of the penalty imposed when he was found guilty of a charge and was fined the amount of $400. Mr Kelly failed to report to Stewards that the horse Royaltown Road had recently had boils over its back and had missed work leading into its running in Race 6 at Stawell on Friday, November 18 and as a consequence this condition may have affected the performance of Royaltown Road which performed below market expectations.

Ted Ryan is overseas. His column returns in December. Star of the West'. A $10,000 bonus is on offer to the successful owner of the horse that accumulates the most points across the three-race points-based series which will be awarded on a 4-3-2-1 basis for first to fourth in each race. Warrnambool RC CEO, John Green, said it was the Club's intention to get the standard of the races similar to midweek metropolitan events. “The races are weighted the same as a metropolitan 0-89 and they cater for open handicap horses,” Green said. “The synergy was there to drive awareness and hopefully drive a bit of participation from a few of the Melbourne stables that might havea mid

■ The Racing Appeals and Disciplinary Board has heard two charges laid by Racing Victoria Stewards against licensed trainer Frank Doderico. Mr Doderico was found guilty for bringing Speedy Emma to race at Pakenham on August 28 with the banned substance Sotalol in its system, which was detected in urine sample taken following the horse’s win in the Alex Scott & Staff Berwick F&M Maiden Plate (1414m). The Board elected to record no conviction or impose a penalty owing to the circumstances of the case. It did, however, disqualify Speedy Emma from the race and amend the placings accordingly. Mr Doderico was found guilty under AR 178E for administering, or causing to be administered, to Speedy Emma medication being Tranquil Paste orally and/or 10 mil of Regu-Mate on raceday prior to her

■ The Racing Appeals and Disciplinary Board will hear an appeal by apprentice jockey Talia Rodder at 10.30am tomorrow (Thurs., Dec. 1). Ms Rodder has appealed against both the decision of Racing Victoria Stewards and severity of the penalty imposed, when she was found guilty for failing to take all reasonable and permissible measures throughout the race to ensure her mount had full opportunity to win or to obtain the best possible place in the field. The charge related to her ride on Serene Tanie in Race 3, the Corporate Interiors Australia Handicap (1500m), at Moonee Valley on Saturday, November 26. Ms Rodder had her licence to ride in races suspended for a period of six weeks, to commence at midnight on Monday, (Nov 28)1 and to expire at midnight on Monday, January 9. A stay of proceed-

ings has been granted effective until midnight tonight (Wed., Nov. 30).

Colette Cooper ■ The Racing Appeals and Disciplinary Board will hear the following charges against licensed trainer Colette Cooper at 10.30am on Tuesday, (Dec. 6). Ms Cooper has been charged by Racing Victoria stewards with the following: ■ Charge 1 – that Ms Cooper administered or caused to be administered a prohibited substance, being alkalinising agents as evidenced by total carbon dioxide (TCO2) at a concentration in excess of 36.0 millimoles per litre in plasma, which was detected in a blood sample taken from the horse Stella Blue prior to it running in Race 4 the Sunraysia Daily Maiden Plate (1800m) at Mildura on Saturday, May 21. ■ Charge 2 (alternative to Charge 1) – that a prohibited substance, being alkalinising agents as evidenced by a total carbon dioxide (TCO2) concentration in excess of 36.0 millimoles per litre in plasma, was detected in a blood sample taken from Stella Blue prior to it running in Race 4 the Sunraysia Daily Maiden Plate (1800m) at Mildura on Saturday, May 21. ■ Charge 3 - for allegedly making a false or misleading statement on or about May 31 in an interview with Ms Liz O’Brien from the Sunraysia Daily newspaper. ■ Charge 4 - for allegedly providing false or misleading evidence during a Steward’s inquiry on Thursday, May 26.

Di Rolle’s Column It features narration by Matt Damon, Tilda Swinton and Geena Davis. An impressive woman is Abigail. She has appeared at The Hague and Clinton Global Initiative Conference and serves on many boards including the White House Project, Fund for City of New York and Global Fund for Women. Her own philanthropic foundation has granted millions to women’s rights, AIDS advocacy, children’s rights, labour conditions, religion and environmentalism. The Australian Women Donors Network is an education-focused non-profit organisation that advocates for gender-sensitive practice within the social investment and grant making sector. Established in 2009 by philanthropists Jill Reichstein and Eve Mahlab AWDN’s growing network advocates for a greater investment in women and girls. AWDN’s growing Network consists of social investors and grant makers who valued these principles and practices, as well as supporters from government, corporate and community sectors. Some alarming statistics on why Australian Women Donors Network is needed : rience physical violence in their lifetime. ■ 2. In 2009, violence against women and their children cost the Australian economy an estimated $13.6 billion. ■ 3. Women account for 62 per cent of people using homelessness assistance services. ■ 4. Every year an estimated 4 million women and girls are bought and sold worldwide either into forced prostitution, slavery or forced marriage. ■ 5. Only 16 nations in the world have legislation specifically referring to sexual assault, while as few as three have legislation that specially addresses violence against women as a category of criminal activity in itself. It’s worth thinking about. There is nothing mickey mouse about all of this and Abigail E.Disney is a most welcome guest here. I will be looking out for her on television interviews. She will be in great demand I am sure. - Di Rolle ■ From Page 90

Trained at Red Cliffs by Bruce Rose, Have A Bender a 4-Y-0 gelded son of Bad Bert and Chatalot was checked shortly after the start from gate three on the second line, settling four back in the moving line. Off and running when the speed slackened, Have A Bender had little difficulty in parking outside the pacemaker Yamaha Lad, with Watson content to dictate the tempo. Inclined to race roughly on the final bend, Have A Bender wasn't pushed out in defeating Tarleton Matt (one/one) in a rate of 2-03.2, with Wrinkle Knutt (three back the markers) third.

Given run of the race ■ Monegeetta duo Lisa and David Miles were winners at Cranbourne on Thursday with Dieberspace/ Patreva gelding Rowdys Knight in the Hyland Sportswear 3-Y-0 Pace over 2080 metres.
