SOFTBALL MEDIA GUIDE

Entering its 63rd year, the Ohio Valley Conference continues to build on the success that has made it the nation’s eighth-oldest NCAA Division I conference. For only the second time in a decade, the Conference expanded by adding Southern Illinois University Edwardsville as the league’s 11th member in 2008. The move expanded the OVC’s geographical footprint to the St. Louis market and marked the first change in membership since expanding to the state of Alabama (Jacksonville State, Samford) in 2003. The 2009-10 school year saw a change in leadership as Beth DeBauche was named the seventh full-time Commissioner in league history. She is currently one of just five females to be the head of a Division I conference, and one of just eight to lead a Division I conference all-time. The last three commissioners of the OVC have moved onto jobs as the commissioner of the Big Ten, Big 12 and the MidAmerican Conferences. The OVC’s proud past dates back to 1948, but seeds for the new league were actually planted in 1941. It was then that Roy Stewart, the athletics director at Murray State, Charles (Turkey) Hughes, the athletics director at Eastern Kentucky, and Kelly Thompson, the public relations director at Western Kentucky, first broached the idea of forming a new conference. Discussions were put on hold by World War II, but reemerged Feb. 27-28, 1948 at the Kentucky Hotel in Louisville as the three original institutions combined with Morehead State, Louisville and Evansville to form the OVC. In the 1950s, the OVC became a pioneer on a much more significant scale socially. During times of racial segregation, league member Morehead State became one of the first non-traditionally black mid-southern institutions to accept a black student. In 1958, Marshall Banks earned athletically-related aid at Morehead, which signed a second black athlete, Howard Murphy, a year later. In 1961, Murphy earned all-conference recognition as a halfback in football. With racial barriers broken, the rest of the institutions in the league began to provide educational and athletic opportunities to African-Americans. A first in the OVC occurred in 2008, when the league had a first round draft pick in both the NFL (Tennessee State’s Dominique Rodgers-Cromartie) and Major League Baseball (Eastern Kentucky’s Christian Friedrich) Drafts in the same school year. The OVC sponsors the following sports: baseball, basketball, cross country, football, golf, tennis and track for men, and basketball, cross country, golf, soccer, softball, tennis, track and volleyball for women. In addition, the OVC also sponsors the combined men’s and women’s sport of rifle. Current league representatives include charter members Eastern Kentucky University, Morehead State University and Murray State University, along with Austin Peay State University, Eastern Illinois University, Jacksonville State University, Southeast Missouri State University, Southern Illinois University Edwardsville, Tennessee State University, Tennessee Technological University and the University of Tennessee at Martin. Tennessee State has been a member of the Ohio Valley Conference since 1986.

TENNESSEE STATE UNIVERSITY The DAVIS BUILDING is topped by its landmark cupola and houses the Department of Languages, Literature and Philosophy and the Thomas E. Poag Auditorium. The building, which once housed the administrative offices, is named after TSU’s second president Dr. Walter S. Davis.

Founded in 1912, Tennessee State University has grown dramatically from a small college to two campuses: the 500-acre main campus and the downtown Avon Williams campus which is located in the heart of Nashville near the State capitol. The diverse student population of more than 8,000 represents 46 states and 45 countries. The Center is named after former TSU student and fifth president, Otis L. Floyd, and long-time Dean of Students and Vice-President of Student Affairs, Joseph A. Payne.

The PERFORMING ARTS CENTER is located adjacent to the east side of the existing Strange Music Building. The facility houses the Theater, Television, Radio and Music Departments and includes a complete renovation of the Strange Music Building.

Today, Tennessee State University’s student enrollment is more than 8,000. There are more than 400 faculty and more than 1,200 staff who are part of the university’s team. Additionally, the university’s rich strength in embracing diversity is evident with 45 countries and 46 states representative of the student body. The beauty and accessibility of the university’s main campus is a plus with now 65 buildings on more than 450 acres. Complimenting the main campus is a newly renovated downtown campus that features a simulated stock-trading center, a student computer laboratory and continuing education, distance learning and multimedia services. The university is arming students with the intellectual resources to compete in a global environment. In support of that, important partnerships have been established with leading global companies such as Boeing, Raytheon, Dell, IBM and others, in which both funding and service-learning opportunities are currently active.

BROWN-DANIEL LIBRARY was erected in 1976 and opened for service during the summer of 1977. This present structure has 82,000 square feet of space with special study and research facilities for faculty and graduate students, and a Special Collections Room which houses the University’s historical archives, theses, dissertations, and other special materials. The library was named in memory of Library Directors, Martha M. Brown and Lois H. Daniel.

The Avon Williams Campus is located downtown, near the center of the Nashville business and government district. Avon Nyanza Williams, Jr., a leading African American lawyer in Tennessee and state senator, represented the plaintiffs in Geier v. Blanton 1972. In 1972, the federal judge, Frank T. Gray, Jr., allowed Sterling Adams and Raymond Richardson (two black professors of mathematics at TSU) and nearly 100 other black citizens from across Tennessee to enter the Geier case as plaintiffs. They formed Tennesseans for Justice in Higher Education. Their complaint centered on the issue that the presence in Nashville of two state supported universities, Tennessee State University a historically black institution and predominately white University of Tennessee at Nashville, perpetuated a state of segregation in higher education in Nashville. In February 1977, Judge Gray ordered the merger of both institutions under the governance of Tennessee State University. This was the first time that a court in a higher education desegregation suite had ordered a historically black college to take over a predominately white one. In 1979 the University of Tennessee at Nashville merged with Tennessee State University, creating an enlarged institution with two campuses and increased enrollment. The original TSU campus, located in North Nashville is designated as the Main Campus and the former UT-N campus was renamed in honor of Avon Williams, Jr.

DR. PORTIA SHIELDS INTERIM PRESIDENT

Dr. Portia Shields was appointed to the presidency of Tennessee State University effective January 2, 2011 – the first female to assume the role of President in the history of the institution. Before her appointment at TSU, Shields served as first female chief executive officer and chief academic officer at Concordia College in Selma, Alabama, from November 2007 to December 2009. At Concordia, she improved academic programs and institutional effectiveness, raised campus academic standards, enhanced the college’s financial operations and led the effort to address accreditation concerns from the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Commission on Colleges (SACSCOC). Shields assumed the executive post at Albany State University in 1996, becoming its first female president and retiring in 2005 after serving for ten years. As the University’s seventh president, Shields inherited a campus recovering from the destructive floodwaters of the Flint River, which had consumed nearly two-thirds of the 204-acre campus in 1994. Her leadership was critical to the university, as she spearheaded a $153-million rebuilding program that revitalized the institution. She was also instrumental in securing an unprecedented $3-million donation from Georgia-born performing artist Ray Charles in 2002, and procured more than $25 million in external grant funds in the following academic year. Prior to her leadership at Albany State, Shields served as Dean of the School of Education at Howard University in Washington, D.C., where she initiated the University’s first comprehensive early learning and pre-college preparation programs. She previously served as director of medical education and biomedical communications in the University’s College of Medicine, where she led the design and construction of state-of-the-art science and technology lab and faculty development initiative. Shields earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Education from the District of Columbia Teachers College, one of three institutions that were later merged to form the University of the District of Columbia. She earned a Master of Arts degree in Education from George Washington University, Washington, D.C., and the Doctor of Philosophy degree in Early Childhood and Elementary Education from the University of Maryland at College Park. She pursued advanced study completing a post-doctoral fellowship in West Africa, awarded by the African American Institute, New York, New York. Additional scholarly research and studies were completed at Harvard University, Cambridge, Massachusetts; Columbia University, New York, New York; American University, Washington, D.C.; and the University of the District of Columbia. Named in 2004 as one of Georgia’s 50 Most Influential Women by the Georgia Informer, Shields is distinguished as one of the founding presidents of the American University of Ethiopia. She has a wide range of stellar experiences and accomplishments in the field of higher education with appointments and affiliations with the American Association of Colleges for Teacher Education, National Association for Equal Opportunity in Higher Education, Southern Association of Colleges and Schools, Inc., American Council on Education, American Association of State Colleges and Universities, Communities in Schools of Georgia and Georgia Appleseed. Additional memberships include Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority Inc., National Council of Negro Women, and Phi Delta Kappa and Kappa Delta Pi Honor Societies.

Teresa Lawrence-Phillips became head of the Tennessee State University athle cs department in April of 2002. As director, the athle c department has made tremendous strides on the playing field, campus, community and classroom.

Some accomplishments under the Phillips’ administra on include the launching of the first oﬃcial website for TSU Athle cs in August of 2002, the revitaliza on of the Big Blue Booster Club, the recogni on of Ohio Valley Conference Scholar Athletes, and conference championships in volleyball, women’s track including a PGA minority naonal championship in men’s golf. Phillips also has the dis nc on of being the first woman ever to coach an NCAA Division I men’s basketball team en route to being named one of the “101 Most Influen al Minori es in Sports” by Sports Illustrated in 2003. She was also named as the Second Most Influen al Woman in Sports in Tennessee by The Tennessean newspaper. In addi on, she was named USA Today’s Na onal Coach of the Year in 1990 and was a three- me OVC Coach of the Year selec on. No stranger to athle c success, she was head coach of the Lady Tigers basketball program at TSU for 11 seasons from 1989-2000. Phillips guided the 1993–94 squad to the program’s first-ever OVC regular season crown, the Ohio Valley Conference tournament championship, and the team’s first appearance ever in the NCAA tournament. She and her staﬀ enjoyed their most successful season in 1994–95 as the Lady Tigers (22–7, 12–4 OVC) shared the regular season tle. TSU claimed its second consecu ve tournament tle and a trip to the NCAA tournament. She has been invited twice to serve as an assistant coach for USA Basketball (1995 and 1999) and was invited to serve as an assistant coach for the U.S. Olympic Fes val North Squad. Prior to her s nt at TSU, Phillips was head coach at Fisk University for four years. She guided the Bulldogs to WIAC League and Tournament Championships in 1987 and 1988 and was tabbed WIAC Coach of the Year twice (1987, 1988). She compiled a 68-34 overall record with the Bulldogs. She graduated from Vanderbilt University with a bachelor’s degree in Economics before obtaining a Masters in Educa on from TSU in 1999. Phillips, who helped recruit six All-Americans and seven All-State players, served as an assistant coach with the Lady Commodores (1981-1984) winning the N.I.T. in 1983. Phillips earned several honors as a three-year le er winner at Vanderbilt. She was the first recipient of the Lady Commodore Athlete of the Year honor, given to the best all-around female athlete. In addi on, she received the Nashville Civitan’s Sportsmanship Award in 1979 and 1980. Community oriented, Phillips has assisted with the Na onal Youth Sports Drug Program and has been appointed to several boards and commi ees which include: NCAA Basketball Rules, NCAA Championship Cabinet, Fellowship of Chris an Athletes, Boys’ & Girls’ Club, the Vanderbilt Alumni Advisory Board and the Nashville Sports Council Execu ve Board. She has held memberships in several organiza ons, including the Black Coaches Associa on, the Women’s Basketball Coaches Associa on, the NCAA Championship and Compe on Cabinet and Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc. She is an inaugural member of the Girls’ Preparatory School Sports Hall of Fame and a 2008 inductee of the Lookout Mountain Sports Hall of Fame. She lives in Nashville with her two sons, Micah and Kyle.

Jeﬀ Dabney was named the head so ball coach at Tennessee State University in July 2010. Dabney comes to Tennessee State a er two years at Southeast Missouri where he served as the team’s pitching and catching coach and worked with the slap hitters. He also served as the team’s recrui ng coordinator as well as directed the condi oning program. He is the fourth coach of the Tiger so ball program.

Dabney joined the staﬀ at SEMO a er serving as the head coach of North Florida Community College in Madison, Florida. His team featured nine all-conference players and one Athlete of the Week honoree. Prior to coaching at NFCC, Dabney was an assistant coach at the University of Florida in Gainesville, Fla. During his me at Florida, the team went 42-23, which was good enough to finish third in the Southeastern Conference and finished with a ranking of 16th na onally. The team also featured four All-SEC Selec ons, four All-SEC Freshman Team players, one SEC Player of the Year, three CoSIDA Academic All-District selec ons and three players signed to professional contracts.

Samantha Buckner joined the Tennessee State University so ball coaching staﬀ in 2010. As an assistant coach with the Tiger program, Buckner will work primarily with the infield as well as perform other du es as assigned by head coach Jeﬀ Dabney. Buckner came to Tennessee State a er serving as an assistant coach for Southeast Missouri for two years. During her me at SEMO, she assisted with the infield and administra ve du es such as travel and academics. ASSISTANT COACH ALANA HICKS FIRST SEASON JACKSONVILLE STATE, 2008

Hicks primarily worked with the pitchers, catchers and hi ers while at Smyrna High School. Alana Hicks joined the Tennessee State University so ball staff in 2010. Hicks will work primarily with the ou ield as well as perform du es assigned by head coach Jeff Dabney. Prior to joining the staff at Tennessee State, Hicks was an assistant coach at Oxford High School. While at Oxford, she worked with the catchers, the infield and the hi ers. She served as an assistant coach at Smyrna High School prior to her s nt at Oxford.

Hicks played so ball for four years at Jacksonville State University. She was named to the Ohio Valley Conference Commissioner’s Honor Roll for three consecu ve years and received the Scholar Athlete Award as a senior. A na ve of Murfreesboro, Tenn., Alana Hicks graduated with a Bachelor of Science in Secondary Educa on from Jacksonville State in 2008.

GRADUATE ASSISTANT ATHLETIC TRAINER BRANDIE McKINNEY SECOND SEASON MILLIKIN, 2009 Brandie McKinney joined the Tennessee State University Sports Medicine staﬀ as a graduate assistant in summer 2009. McKinney’s primary sports are volleyball and so ball. Prior to coming to Tennessee State, McKinney served as a student athle c trainer at Millikin University for four years in the Undergraduate Athle c Training Educa on Program. While at MU, she assisted with clinical pa ent care in addi on to covering football, men and women’s basketball, men and women’s soccer, so ball, baseball, track, wrestling and volleyball. In 2008, McKinney served as the first responder for the Southern Illinois University- Edwardsville summer basketball camp. She also worked the Decatur Memorial Hospital Sports Medicine Illinois High School Football

Combine in 2007. McKinney has also held internships with various organizaons. She has interned at the Decatur Memorial Hospital, the St. Mary’s Hospital Rock Springs Family Medical Center, Surgical Observa ons, Athle Care Physical Therapy Clinic and the Sports Enhancement Center Physical Therapy Clinic. McKinney, a member of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc., was very ac ve as an undergrad. She was a member of the START SMART mentoring program, the Sports Medicine Club as well as the Black Student Union. She competed with the Millikin University volleyball team from 2005-07 and was a Longvanderburg scholar for four consecu ve years. A na ve of Belleville, Ill., McKinney obtained a bachelor of science in Athle c Training from Millikin University in 2009.

Outlook Coach Jeﬀ Dabney will begin his inaugural season with the Tiger program in 2011. Dabney has nine letterwinners returning and will welcome ten newcomers to this year’s squad .

The Tigers will also return the leadership of senior Jalissa Bradly. As a junior, Bradley played in 42 games, making 40 starts. She ranked fourth on the team in ba ng averages with a .263, while totaling 26 hits and 13 runs, with a slugging percentage of .413. Bradley led the team in pick-oﬀs and ranked second on the team in putouts. Bradley also had a .988 fielding percentage, which was second-best on the team.

The complex features a state of the art so ball field, sea ng, a press box, oﬃces, concession stand and locker rooms which were added in 2005. The indoor ba ng facility was built in 2002.

Nashville --- The Tennessee State University athletics academic services department received an award for obtaining program certification through the National Association of Academic Advisors for Athletics. The award stemmed from an academic review of the effectiveness of TSU’s academic standards and practices as well as how the program meets the standards for proper NCAA athletics certification. Tennessee State is first HBCU and first Ohio Valley Conference school to receive program certification.

The academic support program for student athletes, a collabora on between the Academic Center and the Department of Athle cs, assists student-athletes in successfully a aining academic goals and crea ng a balance between academics and athle cs. The program promotes responsibility and ini a ve while encouraging student athletes to take advantage of the rich resources oﬀered at Tennessee State University. Academic counselors work with student athletes on skills needed for success in the classroom, and provide informa on about educa onal op ons.

and life skills workshops. TSU’s academic support program coordinates with faculty, advisors, and coaches to support each student athlete. Dr. Johnnie Smith and her staff are in place to provide student athletes with every opportunity to achieve the highest goals, working as liaison between the athle c department, undergraduate divisions, and administra ve offices of the university. The staff offers counseling, assists student athletes in maintaining sa sfactory progress toward their degrees, and academic eligibility.

The so ball team had 11 players to receive Fall 2010 Academic Honors for obtaining at least a 3.25 GPA. Overall, the so ball program recorded the highest team GPA (3.12) among the female sports at TSU in Fall 2010.

TSU SPORTS MEDICINE Athle c Training/Sports Medicine A team of full- me athle c trainers are on staff to provide daily treatment and applica on of therapeu c modali es to the student-athletes and are led by head athle c trainer, Monroe Abram. The athle c training staff is also available to provide evalua on, informa on on injury prevenon and to administer rehabilita on, if necessary. The TSU athle c medical services are provided by team orthopedist Rob Dyer of Tennessee Orthopedic Alliance. TOA provides the TSU athle c department all sports medicine related services, including surgery and diagnos c tes ng. Dr. Harvey Bowles serves as the team physician. Mission Statement It is the mission of the Tennessee State University Sports Medicine Staff to provide each student-athlete with the opportunity to perform at the highest possible level throughout his or her career. We strive to provide the most efficient and effec ve care available to help prevent, manage, and treat athle c related injuries in conjunc on with the Administra on, the Coaching Staff, and the athletes themselves. Our methods are based on sound medical and rehabilita ve principles in conjuncon with considera on for personal and team goals. These guidelines are based on those outlined by the NCAA and on ethical medical prac ce. We are commi ed to providing professional and proficient care for all those in our charge.

TSU OLYMPIAN STATUE

The total height of the monumental icon, the TSU Olympian Statue, is 46 feet. It was constructed using the slip roller technique, a process that allows an artist to bend sheets of metal at incremental degrees between rollers. The artist who designed and constructed the TSU Olympian has been a faculty member at Tennessee State University since 1994, Jane-Allen McKinney, Associate Professor of Art. THE FIGURE: The figure is made of brass, aluminum and copper with a brush textured finish and the figure itself stands 21’ tall. The percentage of each metal used in the sculpture corresponds in direct proportion to the number of Gold, Silver, and Bronze medals won by athletes affiliated with Tennessee State University (Brass for Gold medallist, Aluminum for Silver medallist, and Copper for Bronze medallist).

“The TSU Olympian holds a brass diploma in the right hand as an icon for the educational baton passed from TSU to her students.” All of the TSU Olympic winners earned undergraduate degrees from TSU. The diploma reads “Tennessee State University, Degree Awarded” with this text visible to the viewer standing at the foot of the base. The Olympic torch is in the left hand of the runner. THE COLUMNS: The Olympian stands on two Egyptian papyrus style columns, one 16’-8” for the raised bent knee and one 14’ for the extended leg. The Papyrus columns consist of ribbed aluminum banded with brass, aluminum and copper, representing bundles of papyrus stocks tied together for strength, typical of Egyptian columns. THE BASE: The base of the TSU Olympian is made of pre-cast concrete 11 feet high and nearly 19 feet at its greatest diameter. It is adorned with three metal bands, each band engraved with the names of Olympic medallists from Tennessee State University (Brass for Gold medallist, Aluminum for Silver medallist, and Copper for Bronze medallist). Future Tennessee State University Olympic winners will have their names added to these bands. The base is in the style of a capital from an Egyptian column. Engraved bricks surround the base of the TSU Olympian with names and messages from TSU patrons whose donations for the bricks will support TSU students. All proceeds from the Olympic brick program will be for Tennessee State University student scholarships. est. 2005

The 15, 000 sq. ft. natorioum is the former home of the TSU Tiger Sharks. The complex now host several area high school swim practices and competitions. Built 1980

Serves as home of Tiger Tennis and features nine tennis courts including a main court with bleachers. The on site tennis office is located in the 1,600 ft. field house. Built 2005

The non permanent court is host to TSU men and women’s home basketball games. It is also used for TSU commencement and area high school graduations. Built 1980

The park’s running course was used for the 2009 Ohio Valley Conference Cross Country Championship with TSU serving as host.

The golf course, located in Springhill, Tenn. will serve as the playing course for the 2010 TSU Golf Intercollegiate.

NASHVILLE

MUSIC CITY With a metropolitan population of nearly one million, Nashville is the largest city in the Ohio Valley Conference. Despite its size, Nashville is a pleasant mix of big city entertainment and “down home” friendliness. Tennessee State University is one of three historically black colleges and universities in Nashville. Tennessee State University is in the middle of the action. The main campus is located just five minutes west of downtown Nashville, while the Avon Williams campus is located in the heart of downtown. Nashville is a cornerstone of the mid-south economy, and Tennessee State University graduates are prominent in the Nashville community and business scene. Resting halfway between the northern and southern boundaries of the United States, Nashville is the capital of Tennessee and the

entertainment, cultural and commercial center of the mid-south. Nashville’s location puts it near the nation’s Southern population center. Major cities such as Atlanta, St. Louis, Cincinnati, Memphis and Birmingham can all be reached by car within 3-5 hours. Nashville’s 17,000-seat Bridgestone Arena, the home of the NHL Nashville Predators, hosted first- and second-round action of the 2000 NCAA Men’s Basketball Tournament and the 2009 Ohio Valley Conference Men’s Basketball Championships. The 2008 AFC Central Champion Tennessee Titans brought the National Football League to Nashville. The team currently shares its 67,000-seat home, LP Field, with the Tennessee State Football Tigers. The stadium is just across the Cumberland River from downtown Nashville.

The Predators hit the ice in 1998. The team led the NHL in attendance for markets under two million its first year, drawing an average of 16,202 fans per game. Professional baseball can also be found in Nashville with the Nashville Sounds. The Sounds play in the Pacific Coast League as the AAA affiliate of the Milwaukee Brewers. Known as “Music City, USA,” Nashville is a city whose music tastes range from country to rock to gospel. Nashville has several major concert venues along with some world-renowned music clubs. Most headline concert tours make a stop in Music City. When it comes to having a good time, there is no better place than Nashville. The city offers a multitude of sporting events, a full range of recreational opportunities, the largest movie theater east of the Mississippi River, restaurants, parks and places to shop.
