THE OHIO VALLEY CONFERENCE Now in its 65th year, the Ohio Valley Conference continues to build on the success that has made it the nation’s eighth-oldest NCAA Division I conference. In May 2011 the Conference expanded for the second time in four years, adding Belmont University which begins competition in the 2012-13 academic year. The addition of Belmont gives the OVC 12 members, the most the league has had at one time in its illustrious history. The move added a second team in the city of Nashville and was the first addition to the league since Southern Illinois University Edwardsville joined in 2008. The 2009-10 school year saw a change in leadership as Beth DeBauche was named the seventh full-time Commissioner in league history on July 28, 2009. She is currently one of just five females to be the head of a Division I conference, and one of just eight to lead a Division I conference all-time. The last three commissioners of the OVC have moved onto jobs as the commissioner of the Big Ten, Big 12 and the Mid-American Conferences. The OVC’s proud history dates back to 1948, but seeds for the new league were actually planted in 1941. It was then that Roy Stewart, the athletics director at Murray State, Charles “Turkey” Hughes, the athletics director at Eastern Kentucky, and Kelly Thompson, the public relations director at Western Kentucky, first broached the idea of forming a new conference. Discussions were put on hold by World War II, but reemerged Feb. 27-28, 1948 at the Kentucky Hotel in Louisville as the three original institutions combined with Morehead State, Louisville and Evansville to form the OVC. In the 1950s, the OVC became a pioneer on a much more significant scale socially. During times of racial segregation, league member Morehead State became one of the first non-traditionally black mid-southern institutions to accept a black student. In 1958, Marshall Banks earned athletically-related aid at Morehead, which signed a second black athlete, Howard Murphy, a year later. In 1961, Murphy earned all-conference recognition as a halfback in football. With racial barriers broken, the rest of the institutions in the league began to provide educational and athletic opportunities to African-Americans. In 2008, former Tennessee State standout Dominique Rodgers-Cromartie became just the fourth NFL First Round draft pick in OVC history when he was selected 16th overall by the Arizona Cardinals. He would break into the starting lineup halfway through his rookie season and started at cornerback for the Cardinals in Super Bowl XLIII. The OVC has had at least one former player named a NFL Pro Bowl selection in four of the past six seasons. The Ohio Valley Conference sponsors the following sports: baseball, basketball, cross country, football, golf, tennis and track for men, and basketball, cross country, golf, soccer, softball, tennis, track and volleyball for women. In addition, the OVC also sponsors the combined men’s and women’s sport of rifle. Now in its seventh decade of competition, the Ohio Valley Conference has grown significantly from its humble beginnings while increasing the number of athletics opportunities it provides for students. Current league representatives include charter members Eastern Kentucky University, Morehead State University and Murray State University, along with Austin Peay State University, Belmont University, Eastern Illinois University, Jacksonville State University, Southeast Missouri State University, Southern Illinois University Edwardsville, Tennessee State University, Tennessee Technological University and the University of Tennessee at Martin.

BRENTWOOD, Tenn. – The Ohio Valley Conference has launched the OVC Digital Network (www.OVCDigitalNetwork.com), the new and improved home for live streaming of athle c contests involving OVC member ins tu ons. The Conference is entering its seventh year of web streaming athle c contests, and this investment in improved quality, rebranding and launch of the Digital Network coincides with the OVC’s partnership with SIDEARM Sports (SAS), which debuted the new OVCSports.com in July and is the host of the OVC Digital Network. One of the top new features of the Digital Network is that all events will be oﬀered free for fans, as opposed to the pay model used in the past. The events will also feature improved quality with most events streaming in high defini on (HD). Fans will also have easier access to the streams, easily accessing them through links at OVCDigitalNetwork.com without any registra on being required. The streams will be available on any computer, tablet or smart phone without any app or so ware download thanks to the use of HTML5 technology. The portal also includes live stats and social media integra on to give fans even more interac on. The streaming eﬀorts will concentrate on football and men’s and women’s basketball in the first year, with all home non-conference and conference contests featuring OVC schools in those sports airing on the pla orm. The OVC Digital Network will also stream select OVC Championships, various other sports (soccer, volleyball, baseball and so ball) and other ancillary programming throughout the season.

Today, Tennessee State University’s student enrollment is more than 8,000. There are more than 400 faculty and more than 1,200 staff who are part of the university’s team. Additionally, the university’s rich strength in embracing diversity is evident with 45 countries and 46 states representative of the student body. The beauty and accessibility of the university’s main campus is a plus with now 65 buildings on more than 450 acres.

Complimenting the main campus is a newly renovated downtown campus that features a simulated stock-trading center, a student computer laboratory and continuing education, distance learning and multimedia services. The university is arming students with the intellectual resources to compete in a global environment. In support of that, important partnerships have been established with leading global companies such as Boeing, Raytheon, Dell, IBM and others, in which both funding and service-learning opportunities are currently active.

The DAVIS BUILDING is topped by its landmark cupola and houses the Department of Languages, Literature and Philosophy and the Thomas E. Poag Auditorium. The building, which once housed the administrative offices, is named after TSUâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s second president Dr. Walter S. Davis.

KEAN HALL, a simplified Art Deco style gymnasium erected in 1951 at a cost of $1,500,000 was dedicated Wednesday, November 25, 1953. The structure is located on the south side of the campus at John Merritt Boulevard and 33rd Avenue, North and is named after former TSU Football head coach and Athletic Director, Henry A. Kean. The building contained at the time of its construction a gymnasium, health, physical education and recreation classrooms, laboratories, staff offices, and facilities for indoor intramural sports, staff and student recreation and physical therapy. The building was vacated in 1980 when the HPER moved to the new Gentry Center Complex. The 300,000 renovation approved in 1986-1987 connected the building to the Floyd-Payne campus center in 1991. The building became a recreational facility for the general campus population. It also serves as the headquarters for the Air Force ROTC, TSU Athletics and the academic and Hall of Fame.

The PERFORMING ARTS CENTER is located adjacent to the east side of the existing Strange Music Building. The facility houses the Theater, Television, Radio and Music Departments and includes a complete renovation of the Strange Music Building. A performance theater seating for 400 was constructed as part of the new building. Theater department spaces include classrooms, support spaces and offices. Rehearsal and production facilities are provided for television and radio departments, as well as offices and support areas. The music department has new laboratory facilities, practice rooms, classrooms and offices and an expanded band practice room and support facilities. The project included approximately 30,400 sq. ft. of renovated space (the Strange Music Building) and 43,000 sq. ft. of new construction.

The FLOYD-PAYNE CAMPUS CENTER contains various student and administrative offices, campus bookstore, post office, and dining services. The Center is named after former TSU student and fifth president, Otis L. Floyd, and long-time Dean of Students and Vice-President of Student Affairs, Joseph A. Payne. The BROWN-DANIEL LIBRARY was erected in 1976 and opened for service during the summer of 1977. This present structure has 82,000 square feet of space with special study and research facilities for faculty and graduate students, and a Special Collections Room which houses the Universityâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s historical archives, theses, dissertations, and other special materials. The library is named in memory of Library Directors, Martha M. Brown and Lois H. Daniel.

The AVERITTE AMPHITHEATER located in the center of campus; landscaped and has permanent seating for 200. The structure is named after Laura M. Averitte, author of Tennessee State Universityâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s alma mater.

DR. PORTIA SHIELDS Most recently, Shields served as chief executive officer and chief academic officer of Concordia College in Selma, Ala., from November 2007 to December 2009. At Concordia, she improved academic programs and institutional effectiveness, raised campus academic standards and enhanced the college’s financial operations. Shields also helped Concordia address accreditation concerns. The Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Commission on Colleges (SACSCOC) initially placed Concordia on probation for issues concerning 17 different requirements and standards. In its most recent report, SACSCOC cited only two issues remaining for the college to address. Shields has wide range of stellar experiences and accomplishments in the field of higher education with appointments and affiliations with the American Association of Colleges for Teacher Education, National Association for Equal Opportunity In Higher Education, Southern Association of Colleges and Schools, Inc., American Council on Education, Association of American Colleges and Universities, and Communities in Schools of Georgia. Additional memberships include Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc., National Council of Negro Women, and Phi Delta Kappa Honor Society. Dr. Portia Shields was appointed to the presidency of Tennessee State University effective January 2, 2011 – the first female to assume the role of President in the history of the institution. Shields assumed the executive post at Albany State University in 1996, becoming its first female president and retiring in 2005 after serving in the capacity for eight years. As the seventh president of the university, Shields inherited a campus recovering from the destructive flood waters of the Flint River, which had consumed nearly two-thirds of the 204-acre campus in 1994. Her leadership was critical to the university’s comeback, as she spearheaded a $153 million rebuilding program that revitalized the institution. Perhaps her most notable achievement was the success in raising funds and external support for the University. She was instrumental in securing an unprecedented $3-million donation from Georgia-born performing artist Ray Charles in 2002, and procured more than $25 million in external grant funds in the following academic year. Prior to her leadership at Albany State, Shields served as Dean of the School of Education, Howard University, Washington, D.C. where she initiated the University’s first comprehensive early learning and pre-college preparation program in health science. She previously served as director of medical education and biomedical communications in the University’s College of Medicine where she led the design and build of state-of-the-art science and technology labs and enhanced the academic performance of medical students.

She is a published author and a well-known public speaker. She has conducted and participated in more than 100 workshops and seminars on higher education issues, teacher education issues, medical and health-care concerns, educational policy issues, international education and faculty development, academic collaborations, retention and high-stakes testing. She served as editor of and contributed two articles to Reflections on Albany State University and contributed to more than 70 publications focused on current issues in higher education, including USA Today (March 21, 2002) and Newsday (March 10, 2002). Other selected collaborative and independent works include contributions to the publication of a reference book entitled Tests and Teaching Quality, a report of the Committee on Assessment and Teacher Quality of the National Research Council, and collaborative and independent publications focusing on higher education administration, medical and health concerns, administrative issues at HBCUs, professional development schools, education, and parenting and teacher education. Authored chapter entitled, “An African American Woman’s Presidency at a Historically Black University: A Personal Journey,” with other University presidents (publication in process). Shields received her primary, secondary and college education in her native home, Washington, D.C. She earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Education from the District of Columbia Teachers College, one of three institutions later merged to form the University of the District of Columbia. She earned a Master of Arts degree in Education from George Washington University, Washington, D.C., and the Doctor of Philosophy degree in Early Childhood and Elementary Education from the University of Maryland at College Park. She pursued advanced study completing a post-doctoral fellowship to study in West Africa, awarded by the African American Institute, New York, New York. Additional scholarly research and studies were completed at Harvard University, Cambridge, Massachusetts; Columbia University, New York, New York; American University, Washington, D.C.; and University of the District of Columbia. Named in 2004 as one of Georgia’s 50 Most Influential Women by the Georgia Informer, Shields is distinguished as one of the founding presidents of the American University of Ethiopia and a member of the Board of Directors of the National Association for Equal Opportunity in Higher Education.

TERESA PHILLIPS Teresa Lawrence-Phillips became head of the Tennessee State University athletics department in April of 2002. As director, the athletic department has made tremendous strides on the playing field, campus, community and classroom. Some accomplishments under the Phillips’ administration include the launching of the first official website for TSU Athletics in August of 2002, the revitalization of the Big Blue Booster Club, the recognition of Ohio Valley Conference Scholar Athletes, and conference championships in volleyball, women’s track including a PGA minority national championship in men’s golf. Phillips also has the distinction of being the first woman ever to coach an NCAA Division I men’s basketball team en route to being named one of the “101 Most Influential Minorities in Sports” by Sports Illustrated in 2003. She was also named as the Second Most Influential Woman in Sports in Tennessee by The Tennessean newspaper. In addition, she was named USA Today’s National Coach of the Year in 1990 and was a three-time OVC Coach of the Year selection. No stranger to athletic success, she was head coach of the Lady Tigers basketball program at TSU for 11 seasons from 1989-2000. Phillips guided the 1993–94 squad to the program’s first-ever OVC regular season crown, the Ohio Valley Conference tournament championship, and the team’s first appearance ever in the NCAA tournament. Phillips and her staff enjoyed their most successful season in 1994–95 as the Lady Tigers (22–7, 12–4 OVC) shared the regular season title. TSU claimed its second consecutive tournament title and a trip to the NCAA tournament. She has been invited twice to serve as an assistant coach for USA Basketball (1995 and 1999) and was invited to serve as an assistant coach for the U.S. Olympic Festival North Squad.

Association, the Women’s Basketball Coaches Association, the NCAA Championship and Competition Cabinet and Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc. She is an inaugural member of the Girls’ Preparatory School Sports Hall of Fame and a 2008 inductee of the Lookout Mountain Sports Hall of Fame. She lives in Nashville with her two sons, Micah and Kyle.

Prior to her stint at TSU, Phillips was head coach at Fisk University for four years. She guided the Bulldogs to WIAC League and Tournament Championships in 1987 and 1988 and was tabbed WIAC Coach of the Year twice (1987, 1988). She compiled a 68-34 overall record with the Bulldogs. She graduated from Vanderbilt University with a bachelor’s degree in Economics before obtaining a Masters in Education from TSU in 1999. Phillips, who helped recruit six All-Americans and seven All-State players, served as an assistant coach with the Lady Commodores (1981-1984) winning the N.I.T. in 1983. Phillips earned several honors as a three-year letter winner at Vanderbilt. She was the first recipient of the Lady Commodore Athlete of the Year honor, given to the best all-around female athlete. In addition, she received the Nashville Civitan’s Sportsmanship Award in 1979 and 1980. Community oriented, Phillips has assisted with the National Youth Sports Drug Program and has been appointed to several boards and committees which include: NCAA Basketball Rules, NCAA Championship Cabinet, Fellowship of Christian Athletes, Boys’ & Girls’ Club, the Vanderbilt Alumni Advisory Board and the Nashville Sports Council Executive Board. Tennessee State University Director of Athle cs, Teresa Phillips, announced Larry Joe Inman as the head coach for the Lady Tiger basketball program on April 16, 2012. Coach Inman brings a wealth of knowledge and experience to Tennessee State with 30 years of coaching experience under his belt. Inman, who was inducted into the Ohio Valley Conference Hall of Fame in 2009, served as head coach of the Eastern Kentucky women’s basketball team from 1988-2008, compiling a 319-244 record and leading the Lady Colonels to two OVC Tournament championships and two NCAA Tournament appearances (1996-97, 2004-05). In being named OVC Coach of the Year eight mes, he also directed EKU to five OVC regular season championships. He also led the Lady Colonels to the 2002 WNIT Sweet Sixteen. He is the all- me winningest coach in Ohio Valley Conference women’s basketball history with his record of 480-317. Inman announced his re rement from Eastern Kentucky in April 2008. Prior to his re rement, Inman was the 27th winningest ac ve coach in NCAA Division I. “Coach Inman brings a wealth of knowledge and success in women’s basketball,” said Phillips. “We know what he can do and expect to see posi ve changes immediately. The 1996-97 edi on finished 24-6 overall and 16-2 in OVC play. The Lady Colonels defeated Tennessee Tech by four points for their firstever OVC tournament championship and earned the program’s first trip to the NCAA tournament. The following year, Inman led Eastern Kentucky to its third regularseason conference championship in four years. In 2002, EKU won its fourth conference banner and played in the WNIT. In 2004-05, Inman earned his eighth OVC Coach of the Year honor while leading the Lady Colonels to both the conference regular-season and tournament tles, and a berth in the NCAA tournament. Inman’s coaching career began at Galla n Junior High in 1970 where he went 51-4 in three seasons. From 1973-78, he went 126-24 (.840) as the head coach at Mount Juliet High School in Nashville. In just five years, Inman led Mount Juliet to five district tles, four regional championships, three Nashville Interscholas c League tles and the 1977 Tennessee Class AAA state tle. Most recently he coached at Lebanon High for two seasons (2010-12). Inman is a graduate of Aus n Peay State University, where he received his bachelor’s degree in 1970. He received his master’s degree from Tennessee State University in 1978. Inman is married to the former Bobbie Gene Follis of Shelbyville, Tenn. They have one son, Jody, and two daughters, Latrice and Tiﬀany. They also have five grandchildren, Ashlyn, Hailey, Jackson, Aus n and Brooklyn.

MARCUS PAYNE ASSISTANT COACH Marcus Payne joined the staff as an assistant women’s basketball coach at Tennessee State University in June 2011. Payne came to Tennessee State with over 25 years of coaching experience on the collegiate level. He has served coaching s nts at OVC members Southeast Missouri and Aus n Peay. Prior to the season at SEMO, Payne coached four years at Aus n Peay, helping the Lady Govs to consecu ve Ohio Valley Conference Tournament Championships. He was ini ally an assistant at Aus n Peay from 1994-96 where the program made its first trip to the NCAA tournament. In the five seasons before returning to APSU, Payne was an assistant coach and associate head coach at NCAA Division II member Missouri-Rolla (now Missouri S&T), a tenure which culminated with the Lady Miners pos ng their best win-loss mark in a decade (17-11) during the 2005-06 season. Prior to that, Payne spent the 1998-99 season at Barton County (Kan.) Community College. The Cougars posted a 29-2 mark that season and won the Jayhawk Conference Western Division tle. From 199698, he served as an assistant coach at UNLV. His coaching career began in 1987 at Southwestern (Kan.) College, his alma mater, where he spent six seasons. Payne began as an assistant men’s basketball coach, serving in that capacity for five seasons (1987-92). During that me, he began his current affilia on with women’s basketball becoming the women’s head coach in April 1991 and later adding du es as Director of Intramurals in August 1992. While serving as the women’s head coach, Payne led his team to the NAIA District 10 playoffs for the first me in more than 10 seasons. Following his successful s nt at Southwestern, Payne spent one season at Brown Mackie College in Kansas. Payne earned his bachelor’s degree in physical educa on, health and recrea on in 1986 from Southwestern. Payne also has an associate’s degree from Neosho County (Kan.) Community College where he earned two le ers in basketball.

JOE BONHAM ASSISTANT COACH Joe Bonham became an assistant women’s basketball coach for Tennessee State University in June 2011. Bonham came to Tennessee State a er serving as a graduate assistant for the Middle Tennessee State University women’s basketball program. As a graduate assistant with the Blue Raiders he coordinated film exchange, assisted in film breakdown and created recrui ng data bases. He also supervised the MTSU Rec Center courts during the summer camp team sessions and gave instruc on to 3rd-5th graders at the Individual Camp and 7th and 8th graders during the Elite Camp. Bonham, a 2010 graduate of Middle Tennessee, was a four-year manager with the Blue Raider program, including the last two seasons as the head manager. During his s nt with Middle Tennessee, the Blue Raiders won three Sunbelt Conference Tournament Championships. MTSU also made four trips to the NCAA tournament and had one NIT appearance. Bonham, a na ve of Bartle , Tenn., completed his undergraduate studies in May 2010 and graduated Cum Laude with a bachelor’s degree in poli cal science. He is currently working on his master’s degree in sport management.

ASHLEE MCGEE ASSISTANT COACH

Ashlee McGee stepped into the role of assistant women’s basketball coach at Tennessee State University in summer 2012. She served as the program’s graduate assistant in 2011. As a graduate assistant, McGee handled all aspects of the women’s basketball program’s administra ve du es as well as assisted with team travel, film exchange, on campus recrui ng and summer camps. McGee, a na ve of Fishers, Indiana graduated from Aus n Peay State University with a bachelor’s degree in Health and Human Science in 2008. As an undergrad, McGee was a standout athlete for the Lady Govs basketball program for four years. She served as co-captain and helped lead APSU to consecu ve conference tournament appearances. Upon gradua on McGee went to Indiana University to pursue a master’s degree in Applied Sports Science. While at Indiana she was a member of the student marke ng associa on where she assisted with adver sing and the promo on of IU athle cs. She has also worked summer camps with Kansas University, Lipscomb University and IUPUI. McGee will con nue her graduate studies in Sports Administra on at Tennessee State.

JANNA EICHELBERGER GRADUATE ASSISTANT Janna Eichelberger joined the staﬀ as a graduate assistant for the Tennessee State University women’s basketball program in August 2012. Eichelberger came to Tennessee State a er gradua ng from IUPUI with a bachelor’s of science in Kinesiology. As a student-athlete, Eichelberger was a member of the IUPUI women’s basketball team for four years. During her sophomore and senior years, she served as the team captain. She received Academic All-Summit League accolades four consecu ve years and earned a spot on the Summit League Academic Dis nguished Scholar’s list in 2012. She was also named to the Summit League Commissioner’s List for Academic Excellence. In 2012, she par cipated in the Final Four’s “So You Wanna Be a Coach” program. A na ve of West Columbia, S.C., she is currently pursuing a master’s degree in the department of Human Performance and Sports Science at TSU.

MUSIC CITY With a metropolitan population of nearly one million, Nashville is the largest city in the Ohio Valley Conference. Despite its size, Nashville is a pleasant mix of big city entertainment and “down home” friendliness. Tennessee State University is one of three historically black colleges and universities in Nashville. Tennessee State University is in the middle of the action. The main campus is located just five minutes west of downtown Nashville, while the Avon Williams campus is located in the heart of downtown. Nashville is a cornerstone of the mid-south economy, and Tennessee State University graduates are prominent in the Nashville community and business scene. Resting halfway between the northern and southern boundaries of the United States, Nashville is the capital of Tennessee and the

entertainment, cultural and commercial center of the mid-south. Nashville’s location puts it near the nation’s Southern population center. Major cities such as Atlanta, St. Louis, Cincinnati, Memphis and Birmingham can all be reached by car within 3-5 hours. Nashville’s 17,000-seat Bridgestone Arena, the home of the NHL Nashville Predators, hosted first- and second-round action of the 2000 NCAA Men’s Basketball Tournament and the 2009 Ohio Valley Conference Men’s Basketball Championships. The 2008 AFC Central Champion Tennessee Titans brought the National Football League to Nashville. The team currently shares its 67,000-seat home, LP Field, with the Tennessee State Football Tigers. The stadium is just across the Cumberland River from downtown Nashville.

The Predators hit the ice in 1998. The team led the NHL in attendance for markets under two million its first year, drawing an average of 16,202 fans per game. Professional baseball can also be found in Nashville with the Nashville Sounds. The Sounds play in the Pacific Coast League as the AAA affiliate of the Milwaukee Brewers. Known as “Music City, USA,” Nashville is a city whose music tastes range from country to rock to gospel. Nashville has several major concert venues along with some world-renowned music clubs. Most headline concert tours make a stop in Music City. When it comes to having a good time, there is no better place than Nashville. The city offers a multitude of sporting events, a full range of recreational opportunities, the largest movie theater east of the Mississippi River, restaurants, parks and places to shop.
