BERGEN MARITIME - a leader within maritime subjects and petroleum technology Housing a technical school, vocational college and course centre under one roof; Bergen Maritime is now one of Norway’s largest educational institutions within maritime subjects and petroleum technology. We currently offer a number of popular courses such as technology and industrial production, electricity and electronics, well engineering, petroleum technology and maritime subjects. Our technical school and vocational college provide approximately 600 student places. Bergen Maritime is owned by Hordaland County Council and works closely with the region’s business community. Our modern premises at Vestre Strømkaien provide a learning environment that combines top-level expertise and state-of-the-art technology.

A tradition of knowledge - Bergen Maritime in a historical perspective Bergen Maritime has played an important role in the history of the city’s economic and social development. Since the first public course of study was established back in 1684, we have often been described as “the biggest school of navigation in the Nordic region”. Starting from the end of the 16th century, Bergen was the first city in Norway to build up a significant merchant fleet; a fleet that laid the foundations for the city’s shipping trade and contributed to the first golden age of Norwegian shipping a century later. Yet, until 1684, there was no organised training for able seaman and ship`s captains. Not until 1853 was this training formalised with the establishment of the Bergen Public College of Maritime Studies. The college evolved gradually, both in terms of breadth of subjects taught and number of students. From 1885, training for ship’s engineers was offered at the Bergen College of Nautical Engineering

Bergen Maritime - 7

Until the 1970s, maritime studies developed quietly and steadily without any major changes. But since 1970 the training of maritime personnel, both in Bergen and throughout Norway, has been in constant development. In 1983 the Bergen College of Nautical Engineering and the Bergen College of Maritime Studies were merged to form the Bergen Maritime Technical School. In 2007 the name was changed to Bergen Maritime Technical School (BMV) and Bergen Maritime Vocational College (BMF), usually known simply as “Bergen Maritime.

Advanced drilling simulator - creates an authentic learning environment Bergen Maritime Vocational College boasts what is probably Norway’s most advanced drilling simulator: a full-scale drilling simulator with 3D-visualisation of drilling decks and downhole drilling operations, fully integrated. The simulator can recreate the environment on fixed rigs, floating rigs, jack-up rigs and drilling ships. The drilling simulator offers excellent opportunities for training and practice in managing relevant and unexpected events such as a stuck drill string, loss of well fluids and pressure control. Direct transmission to training rooms and an advanced recording system make it possible to learn from mistakes and experiences. The simulator is useful for training the various teams onboard. We can provide training in both the technical challenges and the teamwork required. The simulator technology has been tested and developed in close collaboration with industry players. The business community sees good opportunities for useful teaching and training, as well as big cost savings.
