elegates had been waiting for this moment for a long time, throughout the pandemic and even the virtual RANZCO congress that happened earlier this year due to continued physical restrictions. Now, we have the best of both physical and virtual worlds, as this RANZCO is a hybrid event. Plenaries are live streamed and the concurrent sessions are available on demand for two weeks even post-show. Hence, the Congress Opening Lecture topic on Saturday is very appropriate: The Future of Work, given by Prof. Ben Hamer, head of Future of Work at PwC Australia and is Cont. on Page 3 >>

an adjunct professor at Edith Cowan University’s Centre for Work and Wellbeing. We suspect a mention of Zoom may be involved, although not in a dreaded sense now that we are able to have physical contact once again and virtual meetings simply add value (or hybrid in the case of RANZCO)! Another very notable event on Saturday is the RANZCO Plenary. The topic, Vision 2030 and Beyond: Equity in Eye Health for All, couldn’t be more relevant. Prof. Nitin Verma, president of RANZCO, chairs that plenary, right alongside panelists Dr. Kristin Bell, Dr. Justin Mora, A/Prof. Ashish Agar, A/Prof Angus Turner, Dr. Shweta Kaushik, and Dr. Jesse Gale. Perhaps having a look at inequity is key to set up fairness in eye care. That’s exactly what The Fred Hollows Lecture is all about, addressing “Inequity in Eye Health,” with speaker Prof. Clare Gilbert and Prof. Adrian Fung. Among the industry-supported presentations, Johnson & Johnson

Vision today peruses hot topics in their Education Hub presentations. Dr. Andrea Ang plans to speak on: The Role of EDoF IOLs in My Daily Practice. EDoF lenses have been all the rage lately among presbyopic-correcting lens technology. Meanwhile, Dr. Peter Sumich will discuss the Eyhance and Eyhance Toric: A Surgeon’s Perspective.

Speakers Dr. Andrea Ang, Dr. Tanya Trinh, and Dr. Nicholas Toalster play an active role in the debate. Rapid Fire sessions are as hot as ever. Our CAKE & PIE Post editorial team got together and think the following are especially worth mentioning to attend: •

Check out Analysis of Multifocal Visual Evoked Potentials Using Artificial Intelligence Algorithms, by Dr. Maryam Eghtedari. Artificial intelligence is a major topic in eye care right now, and not to worry – leading experts promise machines won’t be replacing doctors anytime soon.

Feel free to attend Does surgical correction of refractive error alleviate headache in patients with keratoconus? A Retrospective Analysis, by Dr. Nigel Khoo. We don’t typically see topics about headache in ophthalmology, and even less so due to refractive error. This should be a thought-provoking lecture.

Invest your time in Aflibercept Monotherapy versus Aflibercept with Retinal Laser to Peripheral Retinal Ischemia for Diabetic Macular Edema (LADAMO), by Dr. Elisa Cornish. Anti-VEGF therapy for retinal diseases has been a game changer, and so any talk of extending the uses of laser peaks the interest of our editorial team. Whether it helped in this case remains to be seen, and we will find out during the talk.

Review Presenting a New Surgical Procedure for Lower Eyelid Reconstruction: Minimal and Marginal Approach for Releasing the Lid with Closure Handling Technique (MARCH Technique), by Dr. Anna March de Ribot. Any time new surgical techniques are discussed, we’re all ears.

Young people, meanwhile, are playing a big part in the RANZCO meeting. There is a fantastic Young Fellows Symposium with features on A Beginner’s Guide to Presbyopia Correction. A lively debate follows with speakers advocating the following positions: •

If I had my way, I would only ever insert a monofocal

If I had my way, I would only ever insert an EDoF

If I had my way, I would only ever insert a multifocal

RANZCO is back and better than ever, especially with this gorgeous weather. Enjoy the day, and be sure to check out full RANZCO coverage right here in the digital CAKE & PIE Post each day of the show.
