MEDIA AND INFORMATION LITERACY OBSERVATORY

ORIGIN The Media and Information Literacy Observatory, milion, is a research platform coordinated by the following organisations:

PRESENTATION milion emerged as a tool for providing useful analysis on a national and regional level in all areas related to Media Literacy. The ability to find out how to access, evaluate, understand, create, disseminate and use information efficiently through exisitng ICT today needs to be studied in order to promote development in society.

The presentation and launch of milion will take place at the Congress on Communication and Education: Media Literacy Strategies, organised by the Communication and Education Office of the Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona.

OBSERVED TRENDS

PREVIOUS STUDIES milion set out with four research projects with the support of the European Commission under the direction of the Communication and Education Office.

Within the different research projects that have been carried out, the following trends have been observed:

AREAS OF WORK Use of ICT and the media. Critical thinking. Communication skills. Environmental factors. Availability of media. Focussed on information and audiovisual content.

MAIN SERVICES •

Definition of the key aspects for understanding Media Literacy.

Benchmarking of aspects to be compared in a valid and practical way.

Design of systems of indicators that show the dynamics and interrelationship between individual competences, abilities and attitudes necessary for the development of Media Literacy.

Mediation of the proposed indicators through market research adapted to real situations and the requirements of each of these situations.

Reflection and generation of environments for debate and shared vision with which different options and solutions to specific problems may be considered.

Design and writing of master plans in Media Literacy.

Management of the Offices responsible for drawing up and carrying out master plans for training and improvement in Media Literacy.

Monitoring and supervision of the different stages of carrying out a master plan.

Evaluation using qualitative and quantitative assessment and diagnosis of situations in the area of Media Literacy.

Engineering and execution of modular adaptations of development models for Media Literacy.
