Phoenix Film Festival 101 This is the 2016 Phoenix Film Festival, also known as one of MovieMaker Magazine’s “Coolest Film Festivals” in the world! “What makes it so cool,” you ask? We’ve got films that are difficult to find anywhere else! All of the films at the Phoenix Film Festival are Valley-wide, American, or World premieres, which are occasionally interspersed with a retrospective or classic film just for fun. There are films for everyone, including narrative features, documentary features, short films, foreign films, and more – all there for you to watch over the duration of the festival. Get ready to kick back, eat some popcorn, and enjoy the movies! We’ve got a quick & easy way to get tickets and passes! The Festival Ticket Center (located a few doors down from the Harkins Scottsdale 101 Theatre – there’s a big sign so you won’t miss it) is your go-to place to purchase any tickets or passes, or to pick up tickets and passes you purchased online. It’s important to remember that even if you have a pass, you still need a physical ticket to see a film and the Ticket Center is where to go! Our friendly staff at the Ticket Center is there to make sure your Festival experience is the best! But while they are cool, they can’t work magic. So be sure to get your tickets early to make sure your top picks aren’t sold out, because once tickets are gone, they’re gone! Supercool tip? Buy a pass. With so many great films playing at the festival, you can save a bit of money and catch more films! We’ve got waiting in line for your film down to a science! We know that waiting in line isn’t very cool, but believe it or not, we have festival-goers who say waiting in line is one of their favorite parts of the festival! While waiting in line you get the chance to chat with your fellow film lovers, and you can hear the latest buzz about the films playing at the festival! You might just run into someone else who’s a fan of your new favorite film! We have 3 different lines, based on which pass or ticket you have. Line 1 is for VIP/Filmmakers/Press – if you have one of those passes, you are seated first! Line 2 is for Festival passholders. Line 3 is for the Flex Pass/Single Ticket holders. If you wish to be seated with one of the earlier lines, you can upgrade onsite at the Festival Ticket Center at any point during the Festival!

16TH ANNUAL
Phoenix Film Festival
We’ve got this super helpful program! This program lets you know about all the films screening at the festival, but you can also find them on our Festival’s website (phoenixfilmfestival.com). Want to know what time your favorite film is playing? You can find all the info you’ll need on the screening schedule in the middle of the program! And don’t forget to pay attention to our sponsors. Their support helps make our Festival even cooler! We’ve got more than just movies! Tired of watching movies all day? We all need a break at some point. We recommend heading over to check out the biggest film party in Arizona! It’s our treat. Check out the Arizona Republic Party Pavilion during Opening Weekend to see how much fun a PFF party can be. Within the Party Pavilion you will find music, bars, parties, as well as free seminars, and our silent auction where you can buy movie-related memorabilia while helping out this amazing non-profit! Plus on Saturday night, we’ve got Scorpius Dance performing their show “Catwalk”. It’s a must see event. We’ve got filmmakers who want to talk with YOU! The filmmakers are at many of our screenings, and the only thing they love more than making their films is talking about them! They’ll be available before and after the screenings, during post-screening Q&A sessions, at the seminars and workshops, and of course, during the parties. Don’t be afraid to approach them; they want to hear what you have to say about their film! We have the best volunteers! If you ever have any questions or concerns, just head on over to one of our friendly Volunteer Staff! They are always smiling and wearing their shiny volunteer shirts. They’d be happy to help you out with any questions you have about the festival. With over one hundred volunteers at our festival, you might even make a new friend who loves the same movie you do! And with that, you can probably see why Phoenix Film Festival is one of the coolest festivals in the world. But don’t just take our word for it. Go experience it for yourself! And welcome to the 2016 Phoenix Film Festival!

Morris from America
Fresh off a great premiere at the Sundance Film Festival is our Opening Night Film on April 7th. A heartwarming and crowd-pleasing coming-of-age comedy with a unique spin, “Morris from America” centers on Morris Gentry (Markees Christmas, in an incredible breakout performance) a 13-year-old who has just relocated with his single father, Curtis (Craig Robinson) to Heidelberg, Germany.
The Man who Knew Infinity
Our Friday Night Event film features Dev Patel and Jeremy Irons. It’s based on the untold story of one of the greatest minds of his generation, it charts the incredible life of Srinivasa Ramanujan, whose genius for mathematics takes him from the slums of India to Trinity College, Cambridge University in the early 20th-century. Spurred on by his mentor G. H. Hardy, Ramanujan overcomes racism and the rigidity of academia to revolutionize the field with his startlingly original theorems, which he attributes to divine inspiration. The film screens Friday, April 8 at 7:00pm.
The Meddler
Our Saturday Night Event film boasts a cast of Susan Sarandon, Rose Byrne, J.K. Simmons, Jerrod Carmichael and Cecily Strong. With a new iPhone, an apartment near the Grove, and a comfortable bank account left to her by her beloved late husband, Marnie Minervini has happily relocated from New Jersey to Los Angeles to be near her daughter Lori, a successful (but still single) screenwriter, and smother her with motherly love. But when the dozens of texts, unexpected visits, and conversations dominated by unsolicited advice force Lori to draw strict personal boundaries, Marnie finds ways to channel her eternal optimism and forceful generosity to change the lives of others – as well as her own – and find a new purpose in life. See it on Saturday, April 9th at 7:00pm.

Morris from America Directed by: Chad Hartigan Run Time: 95 Minutes Cast: Markees Christmas and Craig Robinson Screening Time: Thursday, April 7 at 7:30pm Synopsis: A heartwarming and crowdpleasing coming-of-age comedy with a unique spin, Morris from America centers on Morris Gentry (Markees Christmas, in an incredible breakout performance) a 13-year-old who has just relocated with his single father, Curtis (Craig Robinson) to Heidelberg, Germany. Morris, who fancies himself the next Notorious B.I.G., is a complete fish-out-of-water—a budding hip-hop star in an EDM world. To complicate matters further, Morris quickly falls hard for his cool, rebellious, 15-year-old classmate Katrin. Morris sets out against all odds to take the hip-hop world by storm and win the girl of his dreams. Written and directed by acclaimed up-and-coming filmmaker Chad Hartigan (This is Martin Bonner), Morris from America won two prizes at this year’s Sundance Film Festival, the Waldo Salt Screening Award and a Special Jury Award for Robinson, who has been receiving tremendous praise for his touching and nuanced performance in his first serious role. Poignant and funny in equal measure, Morris from America is a delightfully original take on growing up, following your dreams, and finding your voice.

There are so many good films released each year, it’s impossible not to miss a few. Our staff hand-picked a few of their favorite films that you may have missed when they were in theatres. If you missed them or just want to see them again, we’ve got them for you on the big screen.
Short Term 12 (2013) Directed by: Destin Daniel Cretton

City of God (2002) Directed by: Fernando Meirelles and Kátia Lund
Cast: Alexandre Rodrigues, Matheus Nachtergaele and Leandro Firmino Screening Time: Tuesday, April 12 at 12:30pm
A 20-something supervising staff member of a residential treatment facility navigates the troubled waters of that world alongside her coworker and longtime boyfriend. PFF Executive Director Jason Carney says, “This sneaky good movie showed what a tremendous actress, Brie Larson is. She was nominated for an Independent Spirit Award for the role; however she easily could have received an Oscar nomination.”
Two boys growing up in a violent neighborhood of Rio de Janeiro take different paths: one becomes a photographer, the other a drug dealer. PFF Development Director Leigh Ann Dolan says, “Sure, City of God is not your typical first-date kind of movie, but it was mine and my husband Bob’s. The beautiful cinematography and masterful storytelling can make anyone who appreciates film fall in love.”
Exit Through the Gift Shop (2010) Directed by: Banksy

The documentary about how an eccentric French shop-keeper and amateur film-maker attempted to locate and befriend Banksy, only to have the artist turn the camera back on its owner. IHSFF Festival Director Monte Yazzie says, “What defines art? This is the question proposed in this ‘documentary.’ A sometimes aggravating, yet continuously insightful look into the creative process and the merits of authenticity.”

16TH ANNUAL
In this comedy-drama, three magazine employees head out on an assignment to interview a guy who placed a classified advertisement seeking a companion for time travel. PFF staffer Deb Hildebrandt says, “You are drawn in by the chemistry among this talented cast making it easy to invest in their characters. A clever script brings it all together for an original movie that’s heartfelt, hilarious and unpredictable.”
Guilt-stricken after a job gone wrong, hitman Ray and his partner await orders from their ruthless boss in Bruges, Belgium, the last place in the world Ray wants to be. PFF staffer Chris Cox says, “In Bruges is a surprisingly funny and endearing take on the hitman genre, usually populated by heartless and nearly indestructible archetypes. The dark subject matter and expletive-riddled dialogue made this a tough film to market but it is definitely an overlooked gem.”

Run Time: 100 minutes
Cast: Cooper Hopkins, Nathan Pringle, Leah Pfenning

On top of that, it’s loaded with underground (and some mainstream) marquee names: Mat Fraser (from American Horror Story: Freak Show), his wife, the burlesque performer and choreographer Julie Atlas Muz, Slipper Room founder and Artistic Director James Habacker (who wrote and directed), Mistress of the New York School of Burlesque, Jo Weldon, and an impressive list of downtown New York performers, musicians, and artists such as Stormy Leather, Joe Coleman, and Bunny Love. The Cruel Tale of the Medicine Man has the delirious and free attitude that has been the linchpin in New York underground film since the sixties sophisticated, daring, dirty, heroic, playful, defying category and the expectations of the “market,” essentially giving the finger to anyone who thinks it’s “weird,” even as it entertains the hell out of those willing to go along for the ride.
