Hello and welcome to the 2018 Phoenix Film Festival. If you’re looking for movies (you clearly are,) this is the publication for you. This year, we’ve expanded to eleven days which means 120 more screenings of delicious movies. That makes this program more valuable than ever. Here we go…..

It’s a marathon, not a sprint.

With eleven days of film festival, you’ll want to pace yourself. As a finely-tuned filmgoer, you’ve been getting in shape all your life by watching awesome movies. All that blood, sweat and popcorn butter is about to pay off with the best of independent films right here at the Phoenix Film Festival. Need some help trying to understand the categories? Check out pages 18, 24, 32, 50, 53, 56, 58, 67 and 76.Those pages will help get you zoned in on what types of movie you’ll be interested in. You’ve got eleven days, so be bold and see a little bit of everything. So stay hydrated and full of popcorn, we’ve taken care of all of the movies.

84 pages of advice

This program is the first step to learning all you need to do to enjoy the film festival. You can find out when the films will be screening on our schedule, pages 42 to 48. This is integral to becoming a film festival wizard. You can also find specific film location information in our handy index on pages 81 and 82. The individual film pages can tell you what the film is about, who made it, and also has a picture for you visually-inspired people. While you’re here, take a look at our sponsors and keep them in mind throughout the year. They were cool enough to support the festival, so let’s show them a little love.

Passes and tickets are the key to the cinema

Our Festival Ticket Center is just the ticket for movie fun. We are located a few doors east of the Harkins Scottsdale 101 Theatre with a big banner over the door — you can’t miss it! The Ticket Center is your go-to for purchasing any tickets or passes, as well as picking up any tickets or passes purchased online. It’s important to know that even if you have a pass, you still need a physical ticket to see a film — the Ticket Center is your place to go! Our Ticket Center is staffed with friendly and cool volunteers who are here to make sure you have the best Festival experience possible. While they are smiley and stylish, they are not magicians. Be sure to get your tickets early before your top picks sell out. Once tickets are gone, they’re gone! Want to get more bang for your buck? Pro tip: Buy a pass. You can save a bit of money and catch more of the great films playing at the festival.

Everybody line up. Single file please.

Who says waiting in line is boring? Most people, but that’s not the point. Standing in line at the Phoenix Film Festival is a bit different. This complete stranger next to you might just become your film festival buddy. After all,

10

18th Annual Phoenix Film Festival April 5 – 15, 2018

you’ve both chosen the same film to watch. So chat up your fellow line members and get the scoop on the best films they’ve seen so far. We have 3 different lines based on the type of pass or ticket you have. • Line 1 is for VIP/Filmmakers/Press/Golden Ticket. If you have one of those passes, your group will be seated first. • Line 2 is for Festival passholders. You seat next. • Line 3 is for Super Flex Pass/Flex Pass/Single Ticket holders. If you want to be seated earlier, you can upgrade at any point onsite at the Festival Ticket Center!

And you thought it was just movies.

You’ve been watching movie after movie and you need a break? Well good news — we’ve got more than just movies going. Head on over to the biggest film party in Arizona! We’ve got you covered with the Arizona Republic Party Pavilion during Opening Weekend. There you’ll find music, bars, parties, and even free filmmaker panels. Don’t forget to check out our silent auction where you can bid on cool stuff while helping out this awesome non-profit! Also, while you’re there, treat yourself to a cold Stella Artois.

What’s with all of these filmmakers?

Sure, you could be perfectly content watching a great film festival movie. But what if we told you there would also be filmmakers there talking about how the movie was made? Of course, you’d be ridiculously excited. Ridiculously! The only thing filmmakers love more than making movies is talking about them. You can hear them do just that immediately following many festival screenings. Don’t be shy; feel free to ask your questions about their films. Don’t worry, they’re friendly. It is highlyunlikely that they bite.

How cool are our volunteers?

If volunteering is cool, consider PFF volunteers Miles Davis. We’re putting it out there. Our volunteers are the coolest. They’re here to help, they’re fashionable in their PFF volunteer shirts and they’re one of our favorite things about the festival. If you have any questions, please let them know and they’ll get you answers or point you in the right direction. Also, give them a warm and hearty thanks for giving their time to this great non-profit organization. Well, that should do it. This should get you on your way to enjoying the 2018 Phoenix Film Festival. Have a great time and thanks for being a part of Arizona’s largest film festival.

Opening Night Premiere Event in The Arizona Republic Party Pavilion Thursday, April 5, 2018 at 6:00pm Phoenix’s best restaurants cook up a wide variety of different foods that will satisfy any movie goer’s appetite. Along with some of the best food and drink around, you’ll get the chance to bid on some exclusive silent auction items. And when you are full, it’s time to go to the theatre for the Phoenix Film Festival’s Opening Night Film.

Opening Night features music from Amelia. Her independent songwriting explores the aesthetic of music, spreading a layer of introspective lyrics over a foundation of honest melodies and either acoustic strings or her beloved ivory keys. In her own words, “I make music to help you feel things.”

Lean on Pete Run Time: 120 minutes Screening Time: Thursday, April 5, 6:00 pm Directed by: Andrew Haigh Cast: Steve Buscemi, Chloë Sevigny, and Charlie Plummer Synopsis: From acclaimed filmmaker Andrew Haigh (Weekend; 45 Years), and based on the beloved novel by Willy Vlautin, comes Lean on Pete—a deeply moving story about love, loneliness, family, and friendship, told through the unique prism of one boy’s connection to a very special racehorse. Fifteen-year-old Charley Thompson (Charlie Plummer) arrives in Portland, Oregon with his single father Ray (Travis Fimmel), both of them eager for a fresh start after a series of hard knocks. While Ray descends into personal turmoil, Charley finds acceptance and camaraderie at a local racetrack where he lands a job caring for an aging Quarter Horse named Lean On Pete. The horse’s gruff owner Del Montgomery (Steve Buscemi) and his seasoned jockey Bonnie (Chloë Sevigny) help Charley fill the void of his father’s absence—until he discovers that Pete is bound for slaughter, prompting him to take extreme measures to spare his new friend’s life. Charley and Pete head out into the great unknown, embarking on an odyssey across the new American frontier in search of a loving aunt Charley hasn’t seen in years. They experience adventure and heartbreak in equal measure, but never lose their irrepressible hope and resiliency as they pursue their dream of finding a place they can call home. Featuring an incredible breakout turn by Charlie Plummer (The Dinner; King Jack; Ridley Scott’s All The Money in the World) and memorable supporting work by indie stalwarts Buscemi, Sevigny and Steve Zahn, Lean on Pete is a compassionate and heartrending look at the desire for love, family, and acceptance that drives all of us.

Final Portrait Run Time: 90 minutes Screening Time: Saturday, April 14, 7:30 pm Directed by: Stanley Tucci Cast: Armie Hammer, Geoffrey Rush, Tony Shalhoub Synopsis: In 1964, while on a short trip to Paris, the American writer and art-lover James Lord (Armie Hammer) is asked by his friend, the world-renowned artist Alberto Giacometti (Geoffrey Rush), to sit for a portrait. The process, Giacometti assures Lord, will take only a few days. Flattered and intrigued, Lord agrees. So begins not only the story of an offbeat friendship, but, seen through the eyes of Lord, an insight into the beauty, frustration, profundity and, at times, downright chaos of the artistic process.

FINAL PORTRAIT is a portrait of a genius, and of a friendship between two men who are utterly different, yet increasingly bonded through a single, everevolving act of creativity. It is a film which shines a light on the artistic process itself, by turns exhilarating, exasperating and bewildering, questioning whether the gift of a great artist is a blessing or a curse. Presented in part by a donation from Reel Friend Elizabeth Stewart.

When the head of the household freaks-out with a fork, the scene is set for murderous mayhem and splatterific revenge as the deviant relatives reveal their long-buried hatreds and festering loathings. Sustaining its refreshingly insolent tone, vicious pace and twisted tension for a frighteningly cheeky slay ride, the sugarplum look is delicious and the canny use of classic festive music exceptional. Shrewdly, SECRET SANTA comes with all the expected genre trimmings and is the very naughty but Oh-so nice gory gift that just keeps on giving. Yule love it!
