President’s Message Greetings And Salutations! On behalf of the Phoenix Film Foundation, the biggest non-profit film organization in Arizona, consider this your official welcome to the Phoenix Film Festival! Thanks so much for coming. You are in for the adventure of a movie lifetime! When this organization was started eight short years ago, we wanted to give everyone across the universe a cultural experience that showcased the art and culture of filmmaking. The Phoenix Film Festival exists because of all of you – the filmmakers toiling to bring your artistic world to life, and the audience members who love to see great films that make you think, feel, and bring something new to your soul. The Phoenix Film Festival is the biggest part of the Foundation’s mission, but we also have a lot of other programs that are tailor-made for you. For film lovers, we have year-round programming with monthly screenings with the Phoenix Film Society. IFP-Phoenix also offers filmmakers a chance to learn, network and make your films in Arizona by providing a host of tools and resources at your fingertips. The Arizona Student Film Festival gives Arizona students a showcase of their own, and we host the International Horror & Sci-Fi Film Festival every October around Halloween. If this is your first time at the Phoenix Film Festival, we hope you enjoy yourself and have an amazing time. If you’re a veteran, thanks for coming out again to the biggest film festival in Arizona. We love what we do and we hope you open yourself up to the world of filmmaking and continue to support us as we change the landscape of Arizona, one film at a time. Much thanks and let’s roll! Chris LaMont President and Co-Founder Phoenix Film Foundation

Festival Director’s Message Really? Eight Years? Seriously? It’s hard to believe this is the eighth year. The Phoenix Festival has come a long way since 2001 when we were surprised to have 3,000 people show up. Even today, we’re humbled that in 2007 we surpassed attendance of 20,000. Not only is the Phoenix Film Festival the largest in Arizona, but it continues to be one of the fastest growing festivals in the country. I’d like to thank our Partners that make this event possible. Without the support of these corporations, the Phoenix Film Festival would not exist. You’ll see their names throughout this program. Please support our Partners throughout the year; they have made a significant contribution to helping us bring the Festival to you. Special thanks are also owed to all of our Volunteers who graciously give their time and energy to this organization. Without them there would be no Phoenix Film Festival. Finally, I would also like to thank the filmmakers. Congratulate them on their achievement. It’s a tremendous accomplishment just to make a film, but they have beat out hundreds of other films to be part of this event. We are honored to show their films, so join me in giving them a huge round of applause every time the opportunity arises. The Phoenix Film Festival is the bringing together of filmmakers and film lovers which creates an incredible community for eight days. It’s an event where you and thousands of others have a common interest in great independent films. You and your thousands of new best friends have plenty to be excited about this year. This year’s film selections are our most dynamic yet. There’s a little something for everybody at this year’s Festival, so take it all in. Have a great time.

Film Festival 101 Welcome to the greatest place on Earth if you’re a movie fan. A film festival is a place where you can immerse yourself in the magic and wonder of the motion picture. If you are brave enough, you’ll have the most enjoyable filmbased experience of your life, only to be topped by coming back to the Festival next year. Here are some handy tips to make your Film Festival experience a truly memorable one:

PLAN OUT YOUR JOURNEY Like Frodo, Sam and the rest of those Middle-Earth inhabitants, you have to have a map to find your way across the great unknown. Your guide during your festival is your program and the schedule of films. Figure out what films you want to see, and plan your Festival Itinerary around those movies. The true marathon film festival attendee can see six films in one day. Six films! Just remember to eat occasionally and use the restroom often.

GET YOUR TICKETS NOW The Phoenix Film Festival works under the “Guaranteed Seating System” developed by our organization to make sure nobody gets stuck waiting in line for a screening and then getting turned away because it’s sold out. When you get a ticket to a screening, you know you will soon be nestled in the luxurious seats of the Harkins Scottsdale 101. It’s guaranteed!

WHICH LINE IS THIS? The type of Festival Pass you have determines what line you wait in. Did you pull out the big bucks and get a VIP Pass? There is a special line that gets you into every screening first. Festival Pass holders are the next line. Then the Single Ticket Line is the last to enter the theatre.

BUT I WANT TO BE IN THAT LINE! So you want to get in earlier to the big film tonight? Upgrade your Festival Status! It’s a lot like traveling in First Class instead of Coach. If you want to upgrade yourself from a Single Ticket Holder to a Festival Pass Holder, you can turn in your Single Ticket Stubs anytime during the Festival at the Welcome Center.

WHAT MOVIE IS THE MUST-SEE FILM OF THE FESTIVAL? The easy answer is, “All of them”, but to be honest, the true buzz on the films at the festival can be found from people just like you. Everyone around you wants to see the best movies, and the greatest thing about the Festival is the community experience that everyone feels. Talk to strangers, make a friend, and find out what movies they saw and what movies they want to see.

ALL THE OTHER STUFF That’s right, there’s a ton of other stuff you can do at the Festival. There are workshops, seminars, short films, celebrity appearances, the silent auction, the parties every night, all the premieres, the bands, the music, the conversation, the popcorn and so much more! Do it all! Over the past seven years, the Phoenix Film Festival has created friendships, brought couples together, born many creative projects, brought filmmakers together into

8 | 8th Annual PHOENIX FILM FESTIVAL April 3 - 10, 2008

collaboration, and that’s all on the first day. Remember, the Festival only happens once a year, so enjoy it and have the time of your life!

LAST THING Everywhere you turn, you will see filmmakers. Talk to the filmmakers. They LOVE to talk, especially about their films. Filmmakers come in all ages and sizes. Look for the cool filmmaker badge and say “Hi!” Take them to lunch, buy them a beverage, and find out who they are and what their film is all about. You won’t regret it!

WAIT! THERE’S ONE MORE THING The bedrock of the Phoenix Film Festival is our amazing staff and volunteers. If you need anything, let them help you with whatever you need. They love movies, and they are excited to be part of this amazing event.

OKAY – I FORGOT ONE MORE LAST THING Have a great time and don’t forget to spread the word to all of your uncool friends who decided that they DIDN’T want to go to the Phoenix Film Festival. Buy a hat and a t-shirt and flaunt your amazing choice of arts and culture experiences. And make them come back with you next year!

Enjoy! The Executive Staff Phoenix Film Festival

In search of direction a recent college-grad heads east to China and finds Mei, a beautiful young girl who pushes him to find his path, and he in turn motivates Mei to stay the course of her own dream…

Dough Boys is a drama that serves up the story of Lou and Frank, two Bronx brothers running the family bakery. Because of Lou’s gambling problem the shop is about to be taken from them by the neighborhood gangster, and his brother has no idea.

Two boys from a small town find their courage tested when they accidentally stow away aboard an airplane owned by the mob.

Some 400 people make their home on a rugged 15-square mile stretch of New Mexico desert known as the Mesa. Devoid of basic amenities like running water, paved roads and power lines, the Mesa isn’t an easy place to live, but it does offer solitude and autonomy to those who need it, as well as an alternative to contemporary consumer society. An episode of Big Ideas for a Small Planet: Grow will be shown immediately after Off the Grid.

Ferris Bueller’s Day Off

A dark secret lies beneath the desert, and one man holds the key to an unimaginable living hell.

Ever since growing up as a young boy on a remote New Zealand sheep-farm, Randy has dreamed of performing the ultimate daredevil stunt: jumping across Cook Strait in a rocket car. It is this dream that sends him on his quest from the South Island sheep farm to the bright lights of Auckland city.

When a time-tumbler on a mission to capture a sample of today’s air accidentally lands at the end of a wedding reception, he discovers that he’s already been there all night long. Trouble is he can only stay for 11 minutes at a time.

In 2002, renowned “ghost hunter” Carter Simms was asked to conduct a paranormal investigation of the infamous Musterson House. Joined by a cameraman, a reporter, and a spiritual advocate, she embarked on a three-night quest for the truth.

It’s Ferris’ day off, he’s out to enjoy himself, and he does!
