FESTIVAL 101 How I Learned to Navigate the Film Festival in Five Easy Steps Welcome film lovers! If you’ve never been to a huge film festival that is considered one of the top film festivals in the United States, here you are! So, what exactly do you do at a “film festival”? Good question! You can watch a lot of new films – all of the movies that are shown here at the PFF are all Valley-wide premieres, with the occasional retrospective thrown in for good measure. So you can watch movies! I want to see movies. What do I do? Another good question! You can either go through the program that you hold in your hand, or go on to the PFF website. All of the films that screen at the festival are covered in the program and on the website. There’s a plethora of films – narrative features, documentary features, short films, foreign films – all there for you to watch at your leisure. Where do I get tickets to see the movies? Another really good question! You can buy passes online or at the Festival Welcome Center located three doors down from the Harkins Scottsdale 101 Theatres. After you get a pass, you need to pick your films – get there early so your choices aren’t sold out! If you have a ticket for a screening, you are guaranteed a seat. If you don’t want a pass, you can buy single tickets both online and at the Welcome Center. But why come to the Festival just to see one movie? Buy a pass, save some much-needed dollars in this economy, and have a great time! Do I have to wait in a line to see a movie? Yes. You do have to wait in lines for the films. I know, I know. But there’s so many movies, and so many audience members! How else can we keep track? But the audience lines will give you a chance to talk to your fellow film lovers! What’s the hot ticket? When is it playing again? It’s a huge film community for one special week plus a day in Arizona! Have fun! There are 3 different lines – based on which pass or ticket you have. Line 1 is VIP/Filmmaker/Press – so if you have one of those passes, then you can sit first! Line 2 is for Full Festival Pass-holders. And Line 3 is for the Flex Pass/Single Ticket holders. Are you a little jealous because you don’t want to wait in your line, you want the other line? You can upgrade onsite at the Festival Welcome Center anytime during the Festival!

12th Annual PHOENIX FILM FESTIVAL March 29 – April 5, 2012

So I heard there’s other stuff going on? What’s that all about? You can’t just watch movies every minute of every day. Okay, some of you can. But for the rest of us – here’s a chance to check out the biggest film party in Arizona! You should check out the Festival Party Pavilion during Opening Weekend. We’ve taken over a former huge retail space a few buildings down the sidewalk, so just follow the signs! That’s where the stage is, all the cool performances like the DJs, the burlesque show, the belly dancers, the bars and the parties, as well as the free seminars, our great partner booths where they give stuff away, and our silent auction where you can buy stuff and help out this amazing, struggling non-profit! What makes this “film festival” different than just going to the movies? There are filmmakers actually live at the Festival. A lot of them. They talk before the films, they talk after the films, they talk during the seminars and workshops, and they talk during the parties. Luckily, they won’t talk during the movies. The best part is that they will talk to you! Introduce yourself! Tell them that you liked their movie. They love that! Okay, I’m sold. Anything else I should know? Please make sure if you have any questions, ask our friendly Volunteer Staff! They are wearing shirts that say Festival Crew! They can help you out! We have over a hundred volunteers who work on the festival. They love movies. Just like you! Thanks for the help! You’ve been great. No problem. That’s what this page is for! One more thing – enjoy the Phoenix Film Festival! With Love, The Executive Staff of the Phoenix Film Festival

Phoenix Film Festival Welcomes Phoenix Film Festival Guests

Michael Biehn

Michael Biehn will be at the screening of his new film “The Victim” on Friday, March 31st at 7:45pm.

Michael Connell Biehn is an American actor best known for his roles in James Cameron’s science fiction action films, THE TERMINATOR, ALIENS and THE ABYSS. Michael was born in Aniston, Alabama to parents Marcia and Don Biehn. He is the second of three children. When he was very young, he and his family moved to Lincoln, Nebraska. They moved again to Lake Havasu, Arizona where he graduated high school. The budding actor realized his love for film at a young age and was awarded a drama scholarship to The University of Arizona. In his first year, Michael realized college wasn’t for him and moved to Los Angeles in 1976. It wouldn’t take long for the film industry to recognize talent in the young star. He was given his first role a year later in a pilot called JAMES AT 16. The next year, Michael starred opposite Cathy Lee Crosby in his first feature film, COACH. And if you look close enough, you can spot Michael in the blockbuster hit GREASE, starring John Travolta and Olivia Newton John. Since then, his film and television career has skyrocketed. His list of credits include the Oscar-nominated film THE MAGNIFICENT SEVEN, THE FAN, STILETTO, DEADLY INTENTIONS, THE SEVENTH SIGN, TOMBSTONE, THE ROCK, GRINDHOUSE, PLANET TERROR and NAVY SEALS opposite Charlie Sheen. Michael has proven invaluable to award-winning director James Cameron, being cast in three of his films, TERMINATOR, THE ABYSS, and ALIENS. He has also starred in two of director Franc Roddam’s films, K2 and THE LORDS OF DISCIPLINE. His foray into television has had him guest-starring in several high-profile series, including DARK BLUE, LAW AND ORDER: CRIMINAL INTENT and HILL STREET BLUES. Comedy isn’t a genre Michael is famous for, but his first and only attempt gained him recognition. His comedic role in SUSAN’S PLAN, directed by John Landis, was well received by critics. He appeared last year in PUNCTURE with Chris Evans and Mark Kassen. This year will be a busy one for Michael, his portrayal as Mickey in THE DIVIDE, directed by Xavier Gens, will be released in 2012. He is making his directorial debut with THE VICTIM, which just played in Spain at the very prestigious Sitges Film Festival as an official selection in the Midnite X-treme program.

They set off from Dolly’s star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame heading East for Pigeon Forge, TN. Driving an RV they named Jolene is friend and partner Mike Bowen. All along Interstate 40 at rest stops, RV parks, bars, and hair salons our intrepid band of travelers meet everyday Americans, as they encounter everything from floods in Nashville to an Oklahoma tornado. The journey is one of discovery for the brothers, as well: their relationship with their parents; their hopes, fears and ambitions; the bigotry they’ve encountered; as they search for tolerance and acceptance and the joy of realizing their biggest dream of handing their screenplay to Dolly Parton. Employing a splendidly imaginative combination of animation and archival footage, plus several surprises, Shlain constructs a chronological tour of Western modernization through the work of her late father, Leonard Shlain, a surgeon and best-selling author of “Art and Physics and The Alphabet Versus the Goddess.” With humor, curiosity and irony, the Shlain family life merges with philosophy to create both a personal portrait and a proposal for ways we can move forward as a civilization. An exhilarating rollercoaster ride, the film proposes that after centuries of declaring independence, it may be time for us to declare our interdependence instead. Www.phxfilm.com

Shuffle Directed by: Kurt Kuenne Run Time: 1 hour 22 minutes Cast: Paula Rhodes and TJ Thyne Screening Times: Friday, March 30 at 3:10pm Saturday, March 31 at 1:35pm Sunday, April 1 at 11:55am Synopsis: “Shuffle” is the tale of a man who begins experiencing his life out of order. Every day he wakes up at a different age, on a different day of his life, never knowing where or when he’s going to be once he falls asleep. He’s terrified and wants it to stop – until he notices a pattern in his experience, and works to uncover why this is happening to him – and what or who is behind it. Part “Twilight Zone”-style mystery, part Frank Capra fantasy, “Shuffle” stars TJ Thyne, co-star of the hit TV show “Bones.” The film’s voluminous prosthetic old age make-up is by Barney Burman, winner of the 2010 Academy Award® for Best Make-up for “Star Trek.” The film was written, directed and scored by Kurt Kuenne, filmmaker of the acclaimed documentary “Dear Zachary,” a letter to a son about his father and the hit short film “Validation,” also starring TJ Thyne.

Platinum selling artists and spoiled celebrities are one thing, but mounting stress and the criminal corporate world are a whole different story. “We Run Sh*t” is a never-beforeseen exposé into the darker side of nightlife entertainment.

The tranquility of the night, he hopes, will help him focus on his new novel. His days become more exciting when he starts a romance with Margit (Kristin Scott Thomas), a mysterious and elegant widow who sets strange rules to their meetings: she will only see him at her apartment in the fifth arrondissement, at 5 pm sharp, twice a week and he should ask no questions about her work or her past life. Below Zero Directed by: Justin Thomas Ostensen Running Time: 1 hour 34 minutes Cast: Dee Hanna, Edward Furlong, Kristin Booth, Michael Berryman Screening Times: Friday, March 30 at 9:40pm Saturday, March 31 at 10:35pm Synopsis: Jack (Furlong), a once successful screenwriter trying to overcome his new reputation as “Jack the Hack,” arranges to be locked inside a meat cooler in an attempt to cure his writer’s block. As the temperature falls and his frenzy rises, Jack finds it more and more difficult to distinguish between his work and his present situation. Is he writing the best script of his career, or is he losing his mind? Strangely enough, the film is based on true events. The actual screenwriter of the film, Signe Olynyk, locked herself in the meat freezer of an abandoned slaughterhouse, and the film was ultimately shot at this very location, further blurring the line between reality and fiction. Featuring horror icon Michael Berryman (“The Hills Have Eyes”).

One year after a tragic incident tore their family apart, a grieving son (October) and his estranged father (Russell) embark on a journey into the wild to reconcile their past. When a horrifying accident leaves Russell badly injured and strands them in the wild, it is up to October to save them both. However, this wilderness is not what it seems, and as they deteriorate, so does their concept of reality. Horrifying creatures, ghostly apparitions, is it all in their heads or could the truth be far more terrible? Lance Henriksen stars in this nightmarish descent into the very heart of darkness where more than your guilt can eat you alive.

Love motivates the actions of all our characters. None of the characters in this family drama is a priori evil. The paradox-driven plot is motivated by love of various kinds: parental love, a child’s love of its parents, conjugal love, love between friends, offended love, betrayed love, unrequited love, obsessive love, pretend love, untruthful love, forbidden love, illicit love, and the love of one human being for another. Behind each type of love lies a single, narrow, personal point of view, one personally experienced truth.

Cast: Zuzana Fialová, Karel Roden, Zuzana Bydzovská Country: Czech Republic Screening Times: Saturday, March 31st at 7:55pm Sunday, April 1st at 1:40pm Synopsis: At the beginning of the story Lidice is just one of many small Czech villages trying to survive the war as best as it can. Day-to-day existence within the Protectorate flows along almost serenely and the biggest upheaval is a pub brawl where by accident a drunk father kills his son. The crime is justly punished and the poor wretch Sima starts his sentence. But thanks to this he, alone, survives his family as well as his entire village which becomes the scapegoat for the assassination of Heydrich. The tale of this deeply paradoxical hero is full of contradictions yet remains truly human and forms the spine of the whole film.
