! S N A F E G HELLO FRIN Welcome to the 2009 Phoenix Fringe Festival!

Those of you who were with us last spring will remember the Pilot Project at Space 55. The Pilot Project sparked tremendous interest, as evidenced by the many loyal volunteers who have joined and continued the Fringe mission over the past year. This year’s Festival has expanded dramatically to include 30 artists presenting over 130 performances at 7 venues in Downtown Phoenix.

The Phoenix Fringe Festival is proud to be part of an important movement in the international theatre community that began in Edinburgh, Scotland in 1947. That year, a group of renegade theatre companies arrived uninvited to the Edinburgh International Festival. They set up shop and performed anywhere they could find space, creating a new festival taking place on the “fringe” of the official one. Since then, fringe festivals have sprung up in great cities throughout the world to celebrate and promote edgy, innovative theatre that pushes the boundaries of traditional performance. We are very pleased this year to be presenting artists from around the country and around the world side by side with performers from right here in the valley. It is no accident that this project is taking place in downtown Phoenix, at the heart of the urban desert. In the past few years the downtown area has started to come to life with new cultural opportunities – PHX:fringe plans to be an important part of this urban renaissance for many years to come.

How to Fringe! PHX:fringe 2009 is presenting 30 artists at 7 venues with 130 performances – you may wonder how you can best take it all in. There is plenty to do and you don’t want to miss a thing, so this guide is designed to help you navigate the exciting Fringe experience.

The Program It’s already in your hands, so good work so far. This program has a guide to all of the shows - you can browse and easily see all of the performance times.

Getting Around

Spread the Word After each show, stick around! One of the great things about the Phoenix Fringe Festival is the opportunity to meet other alternative-theatre-goers like yourself and learn about the other performances. This is a great chance to make new friends and find out what else you might like to go see.

Tickets

F E S T I V A L

All Fringe seating is general admission, so plan to arrive at least 20 minutes before the show starts to get the best seats. There are several ways to buy tickets: Individual tickets are $7 each and can be purchased at the door, or in advance online at www.phxfringe.org. Fringe Passes can be purchased online or at any PHX:fringe venue box office. You can get a 5 ticket Fringe Pass for $30, or 10 ticket Fringe Pass for $50. Fringe Passes will be good for any performance on either weekend of the event. You don’t need to decide what shows you’ll be seeing in advance; Fringe Passes can be redeemed at any of the shows. Fringe Pass holders can make reservations by calling the PHX:fringe Box Office at 602-476-1066 or by email to: tickets@phxfringe.org.

PHX:fringe takes place in two Downtown Phoenix neighborhoods: The Roosevelt Row Arts District and the Grand Avenue Arts District. There is a handy map on page 19 to show you where each venue is located and to allow you to plan your experience accordingly. Most of the venues are within walking distance of one another, but you can also use bicycle rickshaws, buses, or the light rail to get around. Kari will work with local performers in a three-day â&#x20AC;&#x153;Margolis Methodâ&#x20AC;? workshop intensive. Kari has spent the last three decades exploring and codifying the skill-sets of the actor, resulting in an abundance of practicable, applicable exercises and improvisation structures. She is Co-Artistic Director of the internationally renowned Margolis Brown ADAPTORS Company and has run a professional international theatre training center since 1984.
