The winter months

for us are a time to be out and about. We dine, shop, visit cultural attractions and recreate outdoors. We are the envy of America. We get a lot of visitors this time of year and are home to many of the biggest events the Valley is known for. The Waste Management Phoenix Open, the Scottsdale Arabian Horse Show and multiple football games bring people from near and far to experience metropolitan Phoenix and beyond. Dining has become a passion for residents and visitors alike as we are home to cuisines from all over the world. Like Las Vegas, Phoenix and Scottsdale are a stop on most well-known national restaurant concepts. And we are known for having some pretty impressive chefs of our own. Christopher Gross’ Christopher’s & Crush Lounge is the latest from this award-winning, internationally known chef. Vincent’s on Camelback is not to be missed on a trip to Phoenix. Vincent Guerithault’s French-inspired dishes have received national acclaim and continue to delight locals. Eddie Matney is known as Mr. Personality among locals and serves up some unique comfort foods and continues to invent great ways for guests to enjoy their time at Eddie’s House in Scottsdale. The list goes on, so be sure to enjoy the variety of the tastes to be found here in the Valley. Enjoy this issue of You Are Here and everything “cool” the Valley has to offer. There’s family-friendly entertainment, city slicker destinations and recreation for the outdoor enthusiast, too. Audiences will love the lineup of art and cultural events like the many concerts and plays offered this Surprise time of year. Broadway is back Peoria with Rodger and Hammerstein’s Scottsdale South Pacific at ASU Gammage. Glendale 17 51 101 Sports fanatics can keep their 101 schedules busy catching games Paradise Valley Central from the Phoenix Suns and the Phoenix 202 10 Phoenix Coyotes, and adventure Avondale junkies can explore Arizona’s Tempe 10 Mesa wild side. Whether you’re new 60 in town or an Arizona native, it’s the perfect time to rediscover the Ahwatukee Chandler Valley’s many attractions. youarehereaz.com

Golf in the Valley

can be enjoyed year-round, which is why we’re home to so many award-winning courses. In fact, many of the Valley’s courses are frequently visited by the pros themselves. Challenge yourself at Troon North Golf Club, which was named the No. 1 course in the Valley by Golf Magazine. The two 18-hole courses afford picturesque vistas of Pinnacle Peak and were redesigned by Tom Weiskopf. TPC Scottsdale is home to the annual Waste Management Phoenix Open, which welcomes the PGA tour each February. Jay Morrish and Tom Weiskopf designed the two championship courses, which are open to the public for play. Enjoy scenic views of the McDowell Mountains, rolling greens and water hazards on the two courses at Grayhawk Golf Club. The club also has a golf school that offers private lessons and even three-day workshops.

This time of year, the high heat has been replaced with easy, breezy weather and visitors flock to the Valley for the season. But whether you’re new in town, returning for winter or have long lived in the Valley, there are a few dining spots that cannot be missed. Try the light, wood-fired pizzas at La Grande Orange Pizzeria, an Arcadia neighborhood fave with an adjoining grocery that serves breakfast and sandwiches through the afternoon. Mastro’s City Hall Steakhouse is known for its big-city ambience, upscale dining and thick, juicy steaks. Order the warm butter cake for dessert, which is truly scintillating. Trendsetters love the modern vibe at Stingray Sushi and noshing on their signature rolls and specialty cocktails before a night out on the town. Recently revamped NoRTH continues to impress with modern Italian dishes served in a casual, contemporary setting at Kierland Commons. Be prepared to wait at Matt’s Big Breakfast, a cozy diner-like space that serves fresh, organic entrées that will not disappoint. Meet Me at the Pub Local pubs that matter

Often referred to as the best brewpub in the Valley, Four Peaks is fun. Its Tempe location, where it started, is housed in a building built in 1892 that was originally a creamery. These guys are serious about brewing and the entire process is done on the premises. Food is served, but you’ll want to go for the beer. 1340 E. 8th St.,Tempe 480-303-9967

George & Dragon For more than 15 years the GnD, as it is affectionately called, has been serving up traditional homemade British fare and imported pints of stout and lager, award-winning fish & chips, and the largest selection of imported draught beer and scotch in Phoenix. With its authentic pub atmosphere and fireplace-graced dining room, the GnD is the place to be in the central Phoenix area.

Rúla Búla Everyone talks about their first time at Rúla Búla Tempe Irish Pub & Restaurant. This place is as much about the food as it is the beer. Fish & Chips and Corned Beef & Cabbage are on the menu, but so are some modern-day Irish dishes. Live music and a laid-back atmosphere will take you away to the Irish countryside. Have a Guinness on the patio but expect a crowd because this place doesn’t hop on just St. Patrick’s Day. 401 S. Mill Ave.,Tempe 480-929-9500 • rulabula.com 36

Johnny Fox’s Public House Straight out of Dublin, Johnny Fox’s is a tavern, pub, public house and inn of old. Guinness rules here, but they have a menu of bottles and draughts names with more than 45 brands, and the whiskey and scotch menu is a who’s who of the region’s best. The Robbie’s Fish & Chips, a traditional beer-battered dish, is made to order with cod or sea bass. 16100 Arrowhead Fountain Center Dr., Peoria 623-878-2660 johnnyfoxspublichouse.com

HAUS MURPHY’S

Since 2007, this Chandler hot spot has received Valley-wide (and even national) acclaim. Keeping things exciting for SanTan fans, the company releases specialty seasonal beers, small batch specialty beers and a weekly caskconditioned ale as well as guest beers from brewers both local and around the nation. Housed in the old Valley National Bank building in Historic Chandler, this place is a real beer lover's dream.

Great food and great beers is the best way to describe SunUp. Fresh ingredients and crafty recipes give its menu great acclaim among the brewpubs. The finest hops, malt and barley are the beginnings to its on-site brews. Bottled and packaged to go, SunUp has become a strong brand in the Valley and beyond.

North Star Housed in a newly built Italian-style farmhouse, NoRTH Arcadia is the debut of the newer version of NoRTH by Sam Fox. Originally a modern Italian eatery, the evolved concept includes more traditional Italian cuisine and pizzas. Farm-fresh, “country-side” Italian dishes and homemade pasta and pizza dough have made this recent opening a big success for Fox.
