Taking full advantage
of the amazing weather, the Valley this time of year is alive with outdoor pursuits a-plenty to enjoy. The variety of festivals celebrates a range of adventures from all things Renaissance at the Arizona Renaissance Festival to contemporary music at the McDowell Mountain Music Festival to ostrich races at the unique Ostrich Festival. And, of course, there’s Spring Training. Nowhere else is America’s favorite pastime more a part of the culture and community than right here in the Valley of the Sun. With 15 Major League Baseball teams calling the Valley their Spring Training home, there are multiple games being played almost every day from March 2 to April 2. There will be no shortage of action as the teams practice their skills and play against each other in preparation for the regular season. Spring also brings a number of community events and celebrations. From east to west, north to south, the Valley is brimming with opportunities to see wonderful art, taste local cuisine and even learn about the area’s history and heritage — especially this year, with all the signature Arizona Centennial events. While the always-anticipated annual Scottsdale Culinary Festival puts a lot of good eating in one place, the Valley’s dining scene continues to expand with community hangouts and award-winning cuisine. And there’s an equally diverse variety of shopping options, of both indoor and outdoor experiences. You Are Here is your guide to discover the great things to see, do and experience in the Valley of the Sun. Whether you’re a die-hard Surprise fan or someone who just enjoys Peoria a fun-filled day at the ballpark, Scottsdale or someone who loves a good Glendale 17 51 101 festival, the Valley has what you’re 101 looking for this spring season. Outdoors comes alive
this time of year. While indoor amusements — museums, theatre performances and concerts — are also plentiful, festivals, outdoor venues and art spaces are in bloom. From farmers markets to music festivals, cultural fairs to food fests, there are many options to get you out and about. Be a part of a cultural standard at the Heard Museum’s Indian Fair and Marketplace or the Indian Student Art Show. It’s about music at countless music festivals and live band experiences in parks Valley-wide. Phoenix Symphony has a number of springtime events outdoors with its Parties of Note series at landmark homes or on the lake at Lake Pleasant. Events at Desert Botanical Garden come alive as the weather is their greatest asset. With Music in the Garden, from March through May, listeners will experience the beauty of our desert and hear inspirational music, making for a perfect evening. Art walks, tours and art shows are a best bet when it comes to getting out and taking in some culture.

Spring is a time to take advantage of the many outdoor shopping
districts and centers throughout the Valley. SanTan Village in Gilbert is an eclectic mix of boutiques, brew pubs, restaurants and retail businesses in a small village atmosphere. Biltmore Fashion Park is a central high-end experience that houses fine-dining establishments and Valley firsts. The Ralph Lauren Store is a not-tobe-missed shopping experience, as is Cornelia Park’s fascinating homewares and furnishings originals. Visit Westgate, whether you are attending a game or not. Shops, dining, celebrations, concerts and even special sporting events happen on the plazas in and around this “city center.” The Kierland area has been energized by the addition of Scottsdale Quarter on the east side of Scottsdale Road. The newest of swanky shops, services, eateries and entertainment are happening there. Mill Avenue in Tempe is an active, vibrant, springtime locale. Shops have been popping up and new entertainment and dining options are springing up as well, making this an urban center to stroll, or if you are going to Downtown Phoenix, hit CityCenter to get the most urban experience. Gettin’ Active Spring into action Echo Canyon
Echo, Echo
Now is the season to hike without all of the heat. Echo Canyon on Camelback Mountain may be city center, but it is a solid hike and great views. Hike is more like a climb in certain areas, so be in shape. The lower hike is less strenuous. Parking is improved, so get your workout or just enjoy the landscape (from above). 602-262-4837 phoenix.gov/parks

Pass up on the indoor yoga and venture out. Metta Yoga offers three weekend classes that are outdoors on The Phoenician grounds. It is March madness
in a whole new way as the Cactus League brings Spring Training baseball to the Valley. Ten ballparks Valley-wide are hopping with daily games from fifteen teams who are here to play the allAmerican pastime. Our hometown team, the Arizona Diamondbacks, is one of the few teams that trains and plays its season in the same community. Fans are attending games in droves at the new Salt River Fields at Talking Stick baseball facility in Scottsdale. Buy tickets early, as games sell out fast. The weather brings crowds to the hiking trails as well. Hit some of our landmark peaks like Piestewa Peak, Pinnacle Peak and Camelback Mountain. Each has options for hikers of any level. Many marathons, walks and biking events come to life for the fit fans who live here or are visiting. The GetSetUSA.com website has dozens of runs for the enthusiast to choose from. Another reason to be here is tennis. Courts and clubs throughout the Valley see a surge in attendance and participants in tournaments. The Phoenix Tennis Center and the Scottsdale Ranch Tennis Park are central to what’s happening on the courts. ACADEMY OF CLASSICAL BALLET

One of the best things about spring in the Valley is great golf. Courses are in their best form and golfers are known to gloat about that great day out on the course. If their game is not up to par, the weather and surroundings always are. On the heels of the Phoenix Open, golfers are energized to get out and play. Public courses, clubs with public play and the driving ranges fill up with foursomes. Talking Stick Golf Club has become a destination course with great rankings and the new hotel and casino nearby. The McDowell Mountain Golf Club, formerly Sanctuary Golf Club, has recently opened to great fanfare. Instruction is available through the worldrenowned Rick Smith Golf Academy and an expanded practice facility that includes practice putting and chipping greens to sharpen skills. FRANK & ALBERT’S
French Fry Frenzy
2400 E. Missouri Ave., Phoenix ✆✆602-381-7632 frankandalberts.com
French fries are the best complement to a great burger or steak, or just a snack. Delux
Perhaps the best part about Bourbon Steaks’ French fries is that they come to your table as you sit down. No need to refuse; they are all yours. Rich and fried to perfection in duck fat, these gourmet fries are served hot and delicious. The Trio of Duck Fat Fries are the smoked paprikadusted with barbecue sauce, truffle oil with truffle oil aioli, and herbdusted with house-made ketchup.
Maybe they started it all. But credit or not, this is the place for a French fry fever. Among the simple contemporary appeal, the to-the-point menu and the full bar are great fries. Burgers bring people back, but the fries keep them there for hours (open till 2 a.m. nightly). Start with a paper-lined, table-top, mini shopping cart of fries — Skinny-cut Russet or Sweet Potato — and dip them in the house aioli or ketchup.

Frank & Albert’s Not too gourmet, Frank & Albert’s at the Arizona Biltmore is simply great food served up in a great atmosphere. Although the architecture is something to look at, this place really could pass as home. The meat dishes, macaroni & cheese, or a Daily Blue Plate special will accompany the fresh fry choices: Sweet Potato, Sea Salt and the Duck Fat Poached Fries. 2400 E. Missouri Ave., Phoenix 602-955-6600 • frankandalberts.com
Everything at Maizie’s is good and seems to go with any mood or time of day. Great patio, too. But the fries are why you keep coming back. Hand cut, tossed with sage-infused white balsamic vinegar and served aside a citrus horseradish sauce that’ll put a smile on your face. Although fried, try them with the Crab Cakes accompanying a chipotle-lemon aioli (which is great for dipping the French fries).
At the Biltmore Fashion Square, this Fox Restaurant Concepts burger joint is all about fresh ingredients and highquality product. That bodes well for the fries: Sweet Potato, Hand Cut, Double Truffle and Zucchini. Sauces include the standards and:Yogurt Dipping sauce, Truffle Aioli, Truffle Oil, Parmesan and Ranch. Other menu items include fresh-made shakes, floats and some incredible banana cream pie.

The concept of smashing your burger to get it crisp on the outside is a revolutionary thought. One of the best burger spots ever, the multiple locations cropping up everywhere is a testament to taste. The burger’s partner in crime is the fries. Fresh cut, and as gourmet as you like. Options are: Smashfries tossed with rosemary, olive oil and garlic; Sweet Potato Smashfries; and Shoe String. Dipping the Shoe String fries in a Black and White shake is a treat that you’ll simply have to try.

Wine Lounging
Be a creature of the night in Phoenix, Scottsdale, Chandler and other outlying communities with the upspringing of wine bars, brew pubs and late-night dining. Nightlife in the Valley offers great venues for entertainment. From stand-up comedy at Stand Up Live at CityCenter in Downtown Phoenix to local bands at The Compound Grill in North Scottsdale, there is plenty to do. Dancing the night away is always an option at the clubs in Downtown Phoenix or Old Town Scottsdale. The hubs of nightlife offer Axis/Radius as one among countless clubs within walking distance in the self-proclaimed entertainment district of Old Town Scottsdale. Step out at one of three top dance clubs on Central Avenue near the Light Rail station at Roosevelt and Central. Relax for an after-dinner drink at any number of the hotel and resort bars. The Arizona Biltmore boasts the Wright Bar, a classic venue for enjoying a brandy or cigar on the patio. The Phoenician also has a patio hot spot — the Thirsty Camel — where views of the East Valley are among the highlights of this upscale lobby bar.
