Opportunity is the special ingredient to life in the Valley of the Sun. Spiced with variety, life here is rich in activities both indoors and out. Day or night, the weather welcomes you to explore the options. Mixed with world-renowned attractions like the Heard Museum and oneof-a-kind superstars like the Musical Instrument Museum are hidden gems throughout the Valley. The tag on each entry in our You Are Here guide is coordinated with the maps to help you get to them. The Valley is home to world-class dining options and boasts a high number of award-winning chefs. The Scottsdale Culinary Festival, one of the Valley’s signature events, fills a full week in April with cooking demonstrations; chef challenges; beer, wine and tequila tasting; and live music before culminating with the Great Arizona Picnic. The concentration of night spots is renowned, with grooves to fit every age range and, in some areas, clustered close enough together that you can walk from one to another and sample a variety of signature concoctions. Start off by checking out the list we have for you on page 36. A variety of entertainment venues abounds throughout the metro area. Live theater ranges from excellent community theater to performances of national productions at landmarks like ASU Gammage and the Orpheum Theatre. Arthouse cinemas in Scottsdale and Tempe add the voice of indie films to mainstream studio releases, and new theaters like the iPic at Scottsdale Quarter bring movie-going to a whole new level of experience from interactive to luxurious. If shopping is your bag, we’ve got you covered inside and out: from acres of enclosed mall to famous shopping districts like Tempe’s Mill Avenue, Scottsdale’s Marshall Way and Old Towne Glendale’s Antique Row. The outdoor enthusiast will find many parks and preserves dotting the metro area and spilling out to surrounding open space. Bike and pedestrian paths meander through pleasantly landscaped miles that give views of our man-made waterway and vital water source, the Central Arizona Project canal. Or challenge yourself on more rugged trail-biking and hiking terrain. And nowhere is there a higher concentration of golf courses, public and private. In fact, world-class golf courses are part of the fabric of our Valley. On page 18, we’ve compiled a list of public courses as well as information on instruction facilities. The Valley is where it’s at for a swinging good time. youarehereaz.com

It’s no surprise
the Valley has built a reputation of being a cultural destination. First Friday in Downtown Phoenix and Scottsdale’s Artwalk are both free events showcasing more than 100 local artists and their creative work. If you are looking for more of an international experience, stop at the Chinese Cultural Center. On May 15, famous jazz saxophonist Lee Konitz will be performing at the Musical Instrument Museum with Young Sounds of Arizona. Go early and begin to explore the two floors of galleries filled with more than 3,000 instruments and artifacts from around the world. If you’re in the mood for a dinner and a show all at one venue, check out the Arizona Broadway Theatre, which presents the musical comedy “The Full Monty” April 22-May 28. Interested in Irish dancing? Head to The Irish Cultural Center on Friday nights for instructional classes on ceili dancing, a popular folk dance in Ireland. If you’re in the West Valley, Artwerks Lateral 58 features local artists, musicians, photographers and more in Downtown Glendale the first Saturday of every month. The temperature is rising as summer approaches. Beat the heat and get your workout on with a day pass for the Rio Vista Recreation Center in Peoria. The truly unique landscape of Arizona is one that draws millions to the state each year. Only in the Grand Canyon State can you hike close to home because Camelback Mountain and Piestewa Peak are practically in your backyard. Lake Pleasant, the second largest lake in Arizona, is less than an hour from Phoenix and a popular hotspot for fishing enthusiasts, many of whom have caught prize-winning largemouth bass. The Valley is also home to the South Mountain Park and Preserve, the largest public park in the nation. Biking, hiking and horseback riding are popular activities throughout its 16,000-plus acres of rugged mountain landscape. Dobbin’s Point, the highest point accessible to the public, has unbelievable views of the city lights at dusk. For a bird’s eye view of the Sonoran Desert, make a reservation with Hot Air Expeditions for an unforgettable hot air balloon journey. Amid the hustle and bustle of the Phoenix-Metro area, you can find peace and serenity at Encanto Park, just north of Downtown. Yes, it starts to get hot, but never too hot to play a game of golf. Here, you’ll find some of the best courses in the world, and spring is our time to shine. Home of the Phoenix Open, the TPC in Scottsdale is a great place to play and learn so much about the history of the game. It’s seen the sport’s best; you name them, they have played at this top-rated course. If you are a real pro, then you’ll love the choice between the Faldo and the Palmer courses at Wildfire Golf Club in North Phoenix. Some say Las Sendas Golf Club in Mesa is one of the toughest courses in the Metropolitan area and it is consistently ranked as one of the most challenging courses in America. So, if you are up to it, incredible views and greens of perfection make this a golf destination for the most experienced. ARIZONA BILTMORE GOLF CLUB 2400 E. Frank & Albert made history in 1929. Todd & Conor serve it up three times a day.
Art. Architecture. Community. Character. It’s all here for the tasting. Dig in.
Executive Chef Todd Sicolo collaborated with Chef de Cuisine Conor Favre for more than a year to create contemporary versions of comfortable American classics. Like the restaurant’s namesakes, they use local purveyors, fresh thinking, and push boundaries, and it’s all about good taste.
