Valley residents don’t hightail it out of town just because the mercury is on the rise. More than ever, the variety of things to do in and around the region makes it the place to be during the summer months. The tag on each entry in our Your Are Here guide is coordinated with maps that help you locate each destination. Great deals on lodging, dining, recreation, golf, events and shopping offer up a number of ways to while away the days and nights. Learn something new while staying cool at indoor exhibits at Heard Museum, Scottsdale Museum of Contemporary Art and Arizona Science Center. A full slate of concerts, dances and festivals celebrate summer, especially when it comes to Fourth of July activities. Tempe 4th is one of the state’s most popular events, while other Valley towns put on patriotic parades and shows, such as Peoria’s AllAmerican Festival. Whether you’re looking for Mexican, Asian, Italian, Indian or American dishes, Phoenix is a great spot for ethnic cuisine. Cyclo in Chandler offers Vietnamese specialties and Zang Asian Bistro dishes up Chinese favorites. This is the time of year to hit the area lakes with jet-skis and ski, party and fishing boats to indulge in a little shoreline camping, fishing, swimming and lakeside lounging. Ce l e b r a t i n g su m m e r w i t h t he sta r s .

Since 1929, the stars have come here to unwind, and 2011 showcases three months of our biggest acts to-date. Academy Award Winner Randy Newman entertains May 28th and 29th, Academy Award Winner JEFF BRIDGES and His Band – performing songs from Crazy Heart and more, play July 3rd, and the Fab Faux takes over Labor Day weekend. The Southwest Shakespeare Company also takes the stage, June 2nd–11th. So mark your summer calendar, because the spotlight is on Arizona Biltmore.

Big Surf

Don’t own a boat? It doesn’t matter at Bartlett Lake where you can rent a pontoon, ski or doubledeck party boat. Located in the heart of Tonto National Forest, with gently sloping beaches and facilities for camping, fishing, boating and skiing, this pristine lake offers the perfect setting for summer fun.

Surf’s up at Big Surf, where you can ride the waves in a pool engineered to simulate the surf of Hawaii’s Waikiki Beach. This summer, learn to boogie board or check out one of the park’s many slides, including Tornado Twisters, White Serpentine, Cyclone & Tsunami or, for little surfer dudes and dudettes, the Otter Slides.

One of the country’s largest resort water parks is right here, in the Valley’s backyard. A great way to go with the flow, Arizona Grand Resort’s Oasis Water Park offers an eight-story-high tower with three water slides, a gigantic wave pool, river tubing and Wild Cat Springs, a sparkling water playground for youngsters.

Tempe Beach Park

Wet ’n’ Wild

The name says it all. Lake Pleasant, the West Valley’s shimmering jewel, features stunning views and a host of water recreation and outdoor activities, including water-skiing, jet-skiing, camping, boating, fishing, hiking, picnicking, stargazing, swimming and wildlife viewing.

Situated along the shore of Tempe Town Lake, the town’s recreational centerpiece, Tempe Beach Park, is the place to bike, walk, run and rollerblade, play Frisbee or just catch a sunset. The park hosts more than 75 events each year, including one of best Fourth of July celebrations in the Valley.

How Sweet It Is Ok, so you feel like a kid in a candy shop, but that’s exactly the point. Remember sticky summer days filled with candy buttons, salt water taffy and Teaberry gum? It’s time for a trip down memory Lane at Smeeks. School’s out, so take the kids along and show ’em the ropes — licorice ropes, that is — along with Double Bubble, Sugar Daddies, Mallo Cups, Clark Bars, wax lips and a ton of other nostalgic candies, sodas and fun novelties.

Sure they’re similar city to city, but many Valley malls are unique enough that you’ll enjoy more than just the offerings. Arizona Center arizonacenter.com

In the Swim

Beat the heat at one of the Valley’s many pools.

Chances are

, you won’t want to hit the ground runnin’ during a Valley summer, but don’t worry, there are plenty of ways to keep your cool while you get your game on. It may be called the Valley of the Sun, but several scenic lakes offer refreshing getaways that don’t take hours of driving. A chain of lakes dominates the eastern region of the Valley, where you can water-ski, jet-ski, camp, fish and picnic. The largest of these, Roosevelt Lake, boasts more than 112 miles of shoreline with serene coves and plenty of opportunities for all sorts of water sports, and Saguaro Lake, the closest to the Valley, is a favorite for water recreation. In the northwest Valley, the cool, clear water of Lake Pleasant provides the perfect spot for sailing, water-skiing, jet-skiing and fishing. Big Surf, Wet ’n’ Wild and Golfland/Sunsplash, as well as many resort water parks, let you surf, slide and splash away hot days. If water isn’t your thing, check out indoor activities, such as Scottsdale’s AZ on the Rocks, Arizona’s largest indoor rock-climbing gym. And you can always chill out at Polar Ice, skating rinks with locations in both Chandler and Peoria. ACADEMY OF CLASSICAL BALLET 21501 N. 78th Ave., Peoria & 623-572-7222 acballet.com

We know,

it’s hot outside, so comfort food during this time of year in the Valley usually means something cool and refreshing. Salads, burgers and barbecue anything, alongside a sweet tea or a cold beer are what you’re looking for. Check out the summer menu at Chelsea’s Kitchen, where garden-fresh staples star in dishes like Farmer’s Market Vegetables and Crispy Chicken & Spinach Salad. Hula’s Modern Tiki is keeping it cool, island-style, while Scottsdale’s Renegade Canteen serves up a mean ceviche. Margaritaville in Glendale offers up a license to chill, as well as its iconic cheeseburger in paradise and icy — you guessed it — margaritas. Several new ice cream shops are churning out some artisan offerings like salted butter caramel and basil lime sorbet, as well as the old stand-bys vanilla, chocolate, butter pecan and strawberry. And for a super cool treat, check out the gelato pies in flavors like cantaloupe, Nutella or Meyer lemon from Grateful Spoon Gelato in Phoenix. Amuse Bouche 17058 W. and you’re ready to cut loose. Or maybe it’s only Wednesday, but no matter which day of the week it is, the Valley offers a wide variety of places to unwind. Classic bars, dance clubs, breweries, sports bars, pubs, and award-winning restaurants and lounges make up an eclectic list of hot spots for nighttime fun. When the sun goes down, Scottsdale sizzles with dance clubs, wine bars and lounges. Cheer on the hometown team at Majerle’s newest location in Old Town, and catch the fun atmosphere at Firehouse for drinks and dancing. Go retro at CityNorth’s Blue Martini, where you can choose from more than 40 different martinis, including Three Chocolates, The Perfect Pear and Key Lime Pie.
