Central Phoenix

a hub of hidden gems Home to the largest concentration of cultural sites in the state, Central Phoenix is also packed with quaint cafés, bars and boutiques. This is your guide to discovering the Valley’s soul.

photo /babe sarver courtesy of greater phoenix cvb

Phoenix isn’t your typical metropolis. Sure there’s a centralized skyline and a seven-figure population, but—unlike San Francisco or Chicago—you’ll never find the city’s gems just by walking around. You have to know where the goods are and what to look for. That’s what makes Central Phoenix so intriguing (and also a bit confusing); it’s an insider’s paradise. Whether in town on vacation or discovering the central corridor for the first time, make sure to take the time to explore all that’s unique about the Valley’s oldest point of pride.

GETTING HERE

Appropriately named, Central Phoenix is within 15 miles of most surrounding Valley cities and is bounded by Glendale Avenue (north), Buchanan Street (south), 15th Avenue (west) and 16th Street (east). South of the I-10 is designated as Downtown, while north is called Uptown.

Car

Follow the 51, 1-17 or 202 freeways to the I-10 and take the Seventh Street or Seventh Avenue exits to begin in

While we wouldn’t recommend longdistance treks in the dead of summer, Central Phoenix can be reached on bicycle via the Grand Canal, which runs from 75th Avenue and Camelback to Papago Park. View a map at srpnet.com.

PARKING

Pay-to-park garages are popular, yet spendy, for sporting and cultural events. It’s best to find a spot on the street, where it’s $1 per hour and free after 5 p.m. in Downtown. Most destinations in this guide have complimentary lots for customers.

Not unlike New York’s famed industrial districts of the Warhol era or Berlin’s post-Wall arts scene, Phoenix is experiencing a cultural phenomenon all its own. As the Valley’s epicenter of performance and visual arts, Downtown is jam-packed with playhouses, large- and small-scale concert venues, museums and contemporary galleries—all within walking distance (a feat made more impressive by the metro area’s infinite sprawl). For the quintessential tour of Phoenix’s indie art scene, check out the First Fridays artwalk, a nighttime showing of emerging contemporary work with an affordable price tag. For a more sophisticated palate, take in an opera at Symphony Hall or a play at the Herberger. At Dodge Theatre, the city’s newest auditorium-style venue, wave your lighters to performers like Tori Amos. Or discover a new band before they hit the radio waves at Modified Arts, the city’s choice venue for touring indie acts. Whether you buy tickets in advance or show up on a whim, CenPho’s entertainment options are endless. 515 ARTS

It wasn’t long ago that the Arizona Diamondbacks became the youngest team to win the World Series. And even more recent that the Phoenix Mercury seized the WNBA title. And if you ask any Suns fan, we’ll be holding another trophy come June. With two sporting complexes in Copper Square, there’s never a shortage of games that beckon fans to the sidelines. From hockey to men’s basketball, the winter season is stacked with near-nightly showdowns of genetically superior players. Fancy yourself an athlete? Then get your own game on at one of CenPho’s green spaces, where talent is optional.

One thing’s for sure at the dozens of independently owned boutiques scattered throughout the Downtown district: there aren’t any buyers based in, say, a corporate headquarters in Tulsa. Most, if not all, items are hand-picked by the passionate proprietors who run shops like Stinkweeds and Olive Annie (a nice departure from mega-malls that cater to, well, everyone). From record stores to clothing boutiques to gifts, toys and apothecary, Central Phoenix is a land of racks and shelves just waiting to be pillaged; it’s knowing where to look that’s half the battle. Tucked just off main drags or in inconspicuous buildings, these hidden gems are where true Phoenix fashions are found (check out Passage, Gold Lion and Made for designs from local couturiers). And while IKEA has grabbed a hold of East Valley living rooms, Downtowners find respite in authentic, solid-like-your-grandpa-made furniture at shops like Phoenix Metro Retro and Red Modern. Short of a food court, retail destinations in CenPho have all the amenities of a suburban mall—with twice the taste. BUNKY BOUTIQUE

Attention mall shoppers: Arizona Center is the area’s only outdoor, twostory shopping complex to feature faves like NY & Co. and Sam’s Café.

While most of the Valley is swathed in strip-mall style, Central Phoenix is ripe with one-off shops that stock more “en vogue” than “en masse.”

Somewhere in between the introduction of the bandana-wearing coyote mascot and the 30th Filibertos fast-food Mexican restaurant, Phoenix got labeled as a town fine food forgot. Au contraire. For foodies acquainted with the city’s smorgasbord of culinary gems, there’s either a sensational hole in the wall or hip eatery on every block. None have selfabsorbed celebrity chefs, steep reservation policies or cookie-cutter interiors; what they do have are genuinely authentic menus created by the owners and chefs themselves (Editor’s Note: prepare to salivate). From 12-hour slow-roasted pork with achiote rojo (Barrio Café) and Australian lobster tail (Coup des Tartes) to prosciutto crudo-topped pizza (Cibo) and Japanese pan-steamed dumplings (Hana), you’ll never confuse Central Phoenix with late-night grub again—unless, of course, you’re referencing Ticoz’s street tacos. Whether on an intimate date for two or gathering with a cartel of close friends, there’s no better district to kick back in than this unpretentious center of the Valley. Bon appetit. BARRIO CAFE

At the turn of the 20th century, Downtown fulfilled every cowboy’s debaucherous fantasies. From breweries to dance halls, the city’s main drag looked like Pottersville in It’s A Wonderful Life. But when the bathtub moonshine dried up, so did the majority of nightspots, leaving Downtown a ghost town come dusk. But something’s happened of late: people are heading into, not away from, the city center on Thursday, Friday and Saturday nights (and, gasp, even during the week). Along Washington Street, a nightlife district has sprung up inviting pub crawlers to sip martinis on the roof at Bar Smith, listen to Latin fusion at Sky Lounge, admire the cavernous interior at Silver and then dance the night away to Eurotrash a few stops down at Burn. Meanwhile, the artsy crowd can gather at The Roosevelt for $5 wine specials, get into a heated philosophical debate at The Lost Leaf (Beware: there’s no sign on this old house) and then mingle until 2 a.m. at Bikini Lounge (the official First Fridays afterparty). From taverns to ultra-lounges, there’s no shortage of places to party past dark. AMSTERDAM
