One Cool Town

By Bicycle

Central Phoenix can be reached on bicycle via the Grand Canal, which runs from 75th Avenue and Camelback to Papago Park. View a map at srpnet.com.

By Bus

Valley Metro serves the entire Phoenix area with a central bus station at First Avenue and Van Buren. For routes and schedules, visit valleymetro.org.

As the mercury rises in the Valley of the Sun, the natural instinct for us desert dwellers is to retreat to the air-conditioned comfort of our homes, close up shop and hibernate like a bear until the fall. But oh, what you’d be missing. Downtown takes on a whole new dynamic and energy during the summer months. It’s a time when galleries, restaurants and bars open their doors and patios to culture-seeking patrons who enjoy an evening out on the town, no matter how steamy the night is. It’s when schoolfree kids crowd downtown’s museums and parks, relishing the relaxing freedom summer has to offer. It’s also a time when the local art scene comes alive with events almost every night of the week. And with METRO light rail zipping through the city, getting to where you need to go is easier—and cooler—than ever. This new dynamic is a welcome change from the days when downtown Phoenix became a virtual ghost town as the summer heat blanketed the Valley. Thanks to an urban resurgence spearheaded by local galleries, restaurants and boutiques, downtown has come alive with people flocking to experience its unique and singular venues. In this issue of You Are Here: Central Phoenix, discover the great things downtown has to offer this summer. From action-packed Diamondback games at Chase Field, to blockbuster concerts and performances at US Airways and the Dodge Theatre, to the cool cultural retreats offered at the area’s diverse array of museum’s and galleries, downtown is the perfect destination to waste away those lazy days of summer.

Arts & Culture

Cool Culture Beat the heat at downtown’s art spaces QUICK TIPS Through Their Eyes

See the world from a different perspective at Shoot for the STARS, a unique photo exhibit featuring the work of adults with disabilities. Showcasing stunning images captured in black and white, the exhibit can be viewed by appointment only at the historic Grace Chapel Church. 302 W. Monroe St. 480-588-7426

Lucky 7

In live theater, expect the unexpected. Space 55 Theatre Ensemble takes this notion to a whole new level with its 7-Minute Series, featuring 10 acts each done in seven minutes. Also check out the theatre’s 10-Minute Play Showcase, presenting work from local and national playwrights. 636 E. Pierce St. 602-663-4032

Believe it or not, there is no better time than a sweltering summer day to enjoy Phoenix’s dynamic art scene. That’s because art lovers can take refuge at more than 100 downtown art spaces, featuring everything from mutant piñatas to floating jellyfish. What sounds better than cooling your heels at exhibits like the dark and mysterious “firefly” installation by Japanese artist Yayoi Kusuma at the Phoenix Art Museum? The notion that downtown becomes a ghost town once the mercury rises no longer holds true, thanks to the multitude of art offerings found throughout the area. And, as the sun sets behind the downtown skyline, the city comes alive with special events like NU at the Heard, Melrose Crawl and, of course, the venerable First Fridays. From small neighborhood galleries to the expansive collections found at downtown’s more high-profile venues, art lovers will be able to find the perfect exhibit that not only engages them, but also makes them thankful for downtown Phoenix…even on a hot summer day. 1 515 ARTS

Downtown’s retail scene is experiencing a renaissance. Known for its small neighborhood shops and boutiques, the area once struggled to compete with the Valley’s outlying communities and its big box, cookie cutter shopping centers. But as the saying goes, what’s old becomes new again and that certain charm of independently owned shops has begun to define the area’s retail landscape. Looking for one-of-a-kind modern furniture? Downtown’s got it. How about the latest quirky selections in vinyl toys? That, too. Or what about to-die-for fashions by up-and-coming designers? Come on, really? Whatever you’re looking for, there’s a good chance a downtown boutique’s got it, as well as more things that you could possibly want or need. Diehard shoppers, beware. Don’t say we didn’t warn you. 1 Bangz

Throughout the summer, people come from the far reaches of the Valley to converge on downtown’s Chase Field in order to take part in a time-honored tradition (well, in Phoenix standards): Diamondbacks baseball. Popcorn, peanuts, cracker jacks, hot dogs and beer are the dietary staples of countless baseball fans who, happily munch and cheer while the Diamondbacks run, hit and slide to victory. It’s downtown Phoenix at its best. Next door at the US Airways Center, the ladies of the 2007 WNBA Champion Phoenix Mercury are also slugging it out on the hard court, proving that basketball isn’t just for the guys.

All-Star Town Enjoy the calm before the storm, my friends. Two years from now, Phoenix will host the 2011 Major League Baseball’s All-Star Game.Think downtown on game day is nuts now? You haven’t seen anything yet! mlb.mlb.com

The All-Star game isn’t until July, but the Arizona Diamondbacks are already on the campaign trail. This summer, fans are encouraged to cast their vote online or at the “All-Star Game Ballot Headquarters” at Chase Field. What’s in it for fans? Ones with the most ballots are eligible to win fabulous prizes!

Event Parking Arriving early, knowing that you’ll spend $10 - $15 on a space for your car and consenting to a bit of a walk will make parking in CenPho a delight - if that’s possible.

Giving commuters quick and easy access to the city’s top business, cultural and entertainment hubs, METRO light rail has comfortably settled into the downtown landscape. The 20-mile route runs from Mesa to Tempe to downtown Phoenix, with an available route to Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport. Along the way, riders have access to some of the Valley’s most significant destinations, as well as downtown’s most celebrated venues. Interested in expanding your creative horizons? Climb aboard and stop at any of downtown’s amazing art galleries and spaces. Craving innovative dishes from the Valley’s rising chefs? Stop and catch a stunning performance by the opera, symphony or host of downtown theater troupes. In recent months, the downtown dining scene has exploded with the addition of a number of new restaurants from some of the Valley’s top chefs, who are suddenly realizing downtown is not only a hotspot for arts and culture, but also for top-notch cuisine. No other area has seen such a resurgence in dining than the neighborhoods south of Roosevelt, west of Central. From Wade Moises to Johnny Chu, acclaimed chefs have opened up shop in this quaint arts district, where they’re taking that independent and free spirit that downtown is known for and translating into good, simple food. This summer, get out of the heat (and the kitchen) and get a taste of the exciting culinary adventures downtown has to offer. 1 Aiello’s

Whether you like your bar scene cool and cozy and or energy-fueled and a little bit frenzied, downtown’s got it all, from intimate neighborhood pubs and wine bars to high-octane nightclubs and dance spots. But perhaps it’s the diversity of these bars that make downtown’s bar scene so unique. In the mood for sake? Check out Sens Asian Tapas & Sake Bar, which has a comprehensive sake menu and offers several types of infused shochu, a distilled liquor made from rice, barley or sweet potatoes. If you have a taste for Italian wine, pull up a chair at the bar at Cibo, where the wine list is filled with delicious selections from specific regions of Italy. Whatever you’re into, there’s one thing certain: the drinks are always flowing. 1 AMSTERDAM

If you subscribe to the notion that it’s always happy hour somewhere, then downtown is the place for you. With countless bars and nightclubs offering their own mix of specialty drinks and cocktails, you’ll always know where the party is.
