From the exciting Peoria Center for the Performing Arts to the historic Deer Valley Rock Art Center, the Northwest Valley is home to an array of renowned arts and cultural venues. Leading the charge for innovative local arts programs is the West Valley Arts Council, whose mission is to promote and support a variety of arts and educational programs, including Theater Works in Peoria. The recipient of 33 AriZoni awards for their 2008/2009 season, the company offers a wide range of productions, as well as acting workshops, touring shows and children’s summer camps. Also on stage is Chamber Music West, an organization dedicated to bringing renowned chamber music ensembles to the Valley, including the Grammy Award-winning Ying Quartet on Jan. 11. If you find culture in history, take a step back in time with a visit to the Sahuaro Ranch Park in Glendale, where you can tour 13 original buildings, rose garden, barnyard and historic orchards. 1 arizona Broadway theatre

In the world of fashion, the brand means everything. Thankfully, when it comes to dropping the hottest names in the industry, the Northwest Valley has got them all. From Betsey Johnson and ed Hardy to True Religion and Diesel, the Northwest Valley is a veritable playground for those fashion hounds that put as much stock in the designer as in the fit. In fact, a wide array of upscale fashion boutiques is all about carrying those hard-to-find designer brands worn by Hollywood’s A-list celebrities and music’s top entertainers. But it’s just not clothes that local style mavens are clamoring for. A number of upscale jewelry houses like Robert & Jayson Miller Fine Jewelry in Arrowhead and Osborne Jewelers in Goodyear offer the perfect accessories to any high-fashion look. If it’s accessories you’re after, nothing complements a smoking hot look than a vintage piece. For the best in vintage finds, check out Matilda’s Vintage Closet in Glendale, where you’ll find antique accessories dating back from the 1920s to the 1970s. 1 a lasting impression antiques 5746 w. Ties That Bind
Family time is fun time in the Northwest Valley QUICK TIPS X
Ice, Ice, Baby
It’s the holidays, which means there’s no better time to tie on those skates and hit the ice. Thankfully, Polar Ice Peoria is offering free 30-minute ice skating lessons on Wednesdays and Saturdays. Once you’re up to speed, public skate sessions are available for you to show off your new skills. 15829 N. 83rd Ave. 623-334-1200 X
All Aboard!
Because kids and trains go together like mac and cheese, the Adobe Western Railroad offers free rides aboard small-scale engine trains on four different 30-minute routes every Sunday. Climb on board for some whistle-blowing fun! 22822 N. 43rd Ave. 623-925-1811
Kid Stuff
Outfit your little one in the latest looks at these Northwest Valley children’s boutiques:
From fun-filled parks and recreation centers to kid-friendly entertainment venues, shops and restaurants, family-focused activities are ripe for the picking throughout the Northwest Valley. Share your child’s first encounter with a zoo animal at the Wildlife World Zoo & Aquarium, where everything from white tigers to endangered antelope will open their eyes to the world of wild animals. And don’t forget to visit the zoo’s aquarium, featuring 75 exhibits filled with fish, birds, amphibians and reptiles. Or how about a family picnic? Grab your basket and head for Tolmachoff Farms, a family-owned and operated working farm in Glendale that offers a corn maze, farm animals and, of course, fresh fruits and vegetables. And because kids sports rule in the Northwest Valley, swing, kick or throw the ball with your budding athlete at any one of the area’s numerous parks and rec centers. 1 aCademy of ClassiCal Ballet

Blame it on the wide-open spaces. Or on the easy access to the area’s rugged desert terrain. Or on the enticing waters of Lake Pleasant. Whatever you can attribute it to, the Northwest Valley is a mecca for all things outdoors. From baseball and golf to thrilling desert and water adventures, the area is filled with activities that will challenge even the most fittest of athletes. For a walk—or shall we say glide—on the wild side, soar through the skies over the Northwest Valley with a lesson at Turf Soaring School. If it’s baseball you’re after, Peoria Sports Complex is not only home to youth, adult and Cactus League play, but is also home to spring training baseball for the San Diego Padres and the Seattle Mariners. For younger athletes, recreation, sports and aquatic centers abound, grooming Arizona’s next sports champions. 1 arizona Cardinals

Good Eats
In the Northwest Valley, variety is the spice of life QUICK TIPS 21
Some Like it Hot
Designed just for us desert dwellers, Kabuki Japanese Restaurant at Westgate is “rolling” out new Southwestinspired items, including the Tuna Poke with spicy ponzu sauce, yellowtail Carpaccio and jalapeño. 6770 N. Sunrise Blvd. 623-772-9832 22 Night Hound Last call just got a little later now that the Irish Wolfhound Pub has opened in Surprise. Open until 2 a.m. every day, the pub offers traditional Irish drinks and fare, including corned beef and cabbage, and shepherd’s pie. There’s even live entertainment, from classic to Celtic rock. 16811 N. Litchfield Road 623-214-1004

Fortunately, the Northwest Valley is filled with a wide variety of dining options, ranging from international flavors, to kid-friendly (or not so friendly), to dining on a budget, to breaking the bank.Whatever you’re in the mood for, you’re sure to find it in these neck of the woods. What distinguishes the Northwest Valley from its culinary-centric neighbors is the number of independently owned and operated restaurants popping up all over the area’s landscape. From the Vietnamese comfort food at Little Saigon in Glendale to the tasty New York-style deli goodness of Archie’s Deli in Surprise, these hidden gems celebrate the entrepreneurial spirit that is alive and well throughout the area. Upscale dining can also be found in the Northwest Valley, from the mouth-watering steaks at Fleming’s Prime Steakhouse in Peoria to the artistic culinary creations at Skye Fine Dining in Arrowhead. 1 aBuelo’s

Cough. Cough, cough. Wheeeeeeze. Cough, cough, HACK!
NEXT STOP: It’s that time of year again — it seems everyone is sick. As parents know, kids can easily pick up a virus and sometimes their symptoms seem worse at night or on the weekend. That’s why Phoenix Children’s built its Urgent Care Center to provide pediatric-specific care and state-of-the-art resources during the hours kids need it most. Every child receives world-class care from our highly trained physicians and staff. So whether it’s an ear ache, broken bone, or lingering cough, we’ll be here, even after the streetlights go on. www.phoenixchildrens.com/urgentcare
