The term graphic design can refer to a number of artistic and professional disciplines which focus on visual communication and presentation. Various methods are used to create and combine symbols, images and/or words to create a visual representation of ideas and messages. A graphic designer may use typography, visual arts and page layout techniques to produce the final result. Graphic design often refers to both the process (designing) by which the communication is created and the products (designs) which are generated.
It begins. Open programmes. Fifteen weeks. Eating, sleeping, television. All night long baby. ALL NIGHT LONG! Smuggled food and adrenalin. Crumbs on the keyboard and forget to save. All night long. Can’t see straight lines. Picture of the person on the desktop blinks. All night long. Artificial lights, screens. And. All night long. Spend the night over, prosthetic click. (I love you kerning) GoodmorningGoodnight No windows. No time. More blurred lines. Computer freezes BP pies All night long Final hours Printer jam, Punched in the face by All night long. Started a fight with all night long. I’ll call it a draw.
This publication is a showcase of Wintec’s Third Year students who have completed a Bachelor of Media Arts in Graphic Design or Moving Graphics. Like most of the work, the publication’s production, is stamped with the bruises of all night long.
Enjoy, All Night Long.

I am 21, born in Johannesburg, South Africa. I have been living in New Zealand for four and a half years and have enjoyed my last 3 years here at Wintec finishing up my degree in graphic design, where I learned valuable skills and made awesome friends. In my internship at Annah Stretton I helped design some elements of fashion week, and contributed to Her magazine. My main focus has always been photography, illustrations and magazine spreads.

I think she wanted you as well, but when she wasn’t listening I whispered that I had shotgunned you already. I don’t think she was very happy, because after that, she took a biscuit tin, some wire, and some explosives and disappeared into the garden for ages. I don’t know what she was doing, but it must have been messy because the next time I saw her she was covered in war paint and missing an eyebrow. I asked her what happened, but she didn’t want to talk about it. I love you computer.

Combining photography and graphic design, I have made the most out of my degree. Coming from a photography background I found having skills in both these areas has expanded my design and helps with ideas and compositions. My design work is strongly based around my own photography. I want to continue with both when I leave Wintec.

Three years ago I walked into a room full of mostly young, na誰ve soon-to-be media arts students like myself. Since then I have lived, studied, and most of all, partied, like your typical poor student. I have also met some primo people and learnt some valuable skills. Now I am thousands of dollars in debt, but highly educated and confident with design. I finally feel ready to attack the world of manual labour with force.

Estelle Moonsamy Yo! Estelle here. I have just a few words of wisdom to share with you… 1) Being at Wintec means accepting that some days you’re the pigeon and some days you’re the statue. 2) Artificial intelligence is no match for natural stupidity, embrace it. (Trust me, I shoulda been blonde) 3) Always remember that a balanced diet is a cookie in each hand. Stick by these, my friends, and you shall have a long and happy life! ps. someday we’ll look back on all this and plough into a parked car.

Charles Luan I’m Charles Luan; 23 years old and come from Beijing, China and have lived in New Zealand for five years. Hamilton is the first place I lived after arriving to NZ. It is now my second hometown. Thank you to all of my friends and tutors, all of you helped me lots and lots. I have learnt a lot of things from you. Three years has gone really fast. I started from nothing and now I have become a graphic designer and am going to graduate this year. Graphic design has changed me and also my life. Art is meditation and design is negotiation. Here are some of my favourite works. To the left is my Design Project, a book about Transformers. There are also some screen shots from the classes Publication, Type, Identity and Dimensions.

Ocean Reihana I am 20 years old and moved to Hamilton from the small town of Kaitaia three years ago to study at Wintec. The experience has been both exciting and stressful at the same time but I have enjoyed every part of it thoroughly. Making new friends and meeting new people was also a bonus. I have found an interest and enjoyment in Graphic Design and would like to pursue a career in the industry. I have also discovered that I have found an interest in working in the field of event management. I think the merge of utilising Graphic Design skills and elements with the promotion involved in event management, would best describe the work that I enjoy doing the most. The work shown below is a packaging assignment for novelty confectionary and the images to the right are of work done creating a logo and applying it to various outcomes for a family reunion.

Heather Flintoff I’m a 21-year old Cancerian and am fun and friendly! I like music and clothes, but most importantly I LOVE DESIGN! I also love vibrant things in life such as friends, family, summer, colours and good times all round! I’ve learnt a lot at my three years here at Wintec and would like to thank all the tutors I’ve had and all the people in my class that I am happy to have gotten to know. In this magazine I have included two techno posters I designed, images of a t-shirt design and the Flossie Media Group brochure site I created at NZ Girl while on my internship. I found a saying by George Santayana that pretty much sums up my idea of design and so I’ll leave you all with this; Graphic design is the paradise of individuality, eccentricity, heresy, abnormality, hobbies and humours.

My main focus is print based design in the form of branding/identity, packaging and publication. I am also interested in digital design such as web design.

I think the idea of creating characters and worlds from basically nothing, is so cool and rewarding. It’s not all I do though, if it’s based on a computer I’m most probably interested in it: web, animation, moving graphics, you name it… You have to do what you enjoy, and make the most of it. Go get yourself a PC, they’re the way forward.

Finally 3rd year is over. My favourite paper was probably Project, where I chose to experiment with drawing up characters in illustrator using vector lines. I found that I loved drawing with thin lines and ornate patterns and enjoyed playing with different type and trying to make it integrate with the illustrations. The project I found most amusing was Dimensions, where we made up our own packaging idea. Using silicon chicken filets was pretty funny. It really did get the reaction I was hoping for and finding a name for it was a pretty funny process.

Christopher Hope All night long... the name for this exhibition. How appropriate, it had little to do with Lionel Ritchie’s 1983 hit single and more to do with a group of zombies that slept all day and worked all night long to produce work that would represent them. The works I’ve chosen to showcase are from a range of assignments finished at Wintec as well as projects I completed for ACP Magazines and Insight 51 during my internship in June of 2008. This includes (from left to right): a Science-Fiction book cover that won the D & AD ‘inbook’ award for book design, a full size culture magazine called Funhouse, The Black Edition. Crab Sticks, cigarettes in a matchbox for practicality. Yen Magazine, which I was the guest Design Assistant on in June. Waves and Zoo magazines are titles under ACP; I completed these covers whilst doing my internship. A small photograph of a spread from Funhouse Magazine. Yardage Print and logo for Insight 51 that will be on the inside of jackets and on t-shirts in the next clothing range to come out in 2009. A photograph series exploring light, subject being skateboarding, exhibited in 2005. Black boy fish was part of an underwater photography assignment completed in 2007, this was associated to the word creep with my artist model being film maker David Lynch. Thank you DD Smash!
