Irememberhavingaconversationwith acommercialcolleaguewhowas seniortomeinbothrankandage whenIfirststartedmakingpodcastsat ourcompany.Theywantedtounder‐standwhatpodcastswere,andhowwe couldmonetisethem.
Theproblemwiththisquestionisn’t reallythe‘makingmoney’bit,it’strying tocommunicatethepower,thedelight, andtheopportunitiesofpodcaststo someonewhoisn’talreadylisteningto themforhourseveryweek.
Imean,there’satechnicaldefinition–an RSSfeedpointingtoabunchofMP3son aserversomewhere–orthere’sthe morehuman-friendlyfudge:they’reabit likeradioshowsyouusuallylistentoondemandonyourphone.Butneitherof thesegetstothemagicofpodcasting;if someoneislisteningtoyourshowon headphones,yourvoiceseemstoeman‐atefromthecentreoftheirskull,the veryclosestyoucangettosomeone. Becauseyoudon’tneedriskyinvest‐mentsintimeandmoneytobeableto
makepodcasts,showsexistwhich super-servethetiniestofniches withpassionandlove,orgivea uniquespinjustforyoutoatopic thousandsofothersarecoveringin uncountabledifferentways. Thisiswhy,Ithink,Ifailedtocom‐municatetomycolleaguethose yearsago;Ididn’tknowthemwell enoughtobeabletorecommend showstheyshouldlistentothat wouldreallyresonate,andsothe powerofthatintimacy,offeelinglike youaresittingatatablewithsome ofyourbestfriendsandco-conspir‐ators,didn’tland.
Whensomeoneissteppingoutof theirfrontdoortogettowork,you canbethereasontheyseethenext 45minutesoftheirlife–trudging, driving,crushedonpublictransport –notasatediousduty,astime stolenfromthembycapitalism,but asachancefinallytolistentothe latestepisodeofashowthatspeaks tothem,theiridentity,theirsoul.
It’snot‘doingtheironing’,it’slaugh‐ingandragingwiththelatestGuilty Feminist.It’snot‘walkingthedog’,it’s greedilygobblingthebackcatalogue ofOffMenu.It’snot‘freezingyour arseoffonthesidelinesinlateJanu‐arywhileyourkidplaysfive-a-side’, it’sfreezingyourarseoffonthe sidelinesinlateJanuarywhileyour kidplaysfive-a-sidewhilebeingin‐spiredandchallengedbyBetterPod.
Ateachturn,youcan bethethingthat turnsaduty,adirge intoanopportunity tospendtimewith comradesand confidantes,
becomingforthathalfhour,that hour,moreyourself.Lifecanstrip youridentityandbeingfromyouas youworkandcareforpeoplearound you;yourfriendswholiveinyour earscanrestorethem.

Podcastscanbeaplacetoexperi‐mentwithtoneinaring-fencedway whichneverthelessadvancesthein‐terestsofaparentbrand;lookatThe WeekUnwrapped,say,oroneofmy oldshows,ReadingBetweenThe Lines,thestorypodcastfromThe People’sFriend.Findingnewaudi‐encesandlearningnewwaystotell storiesinanauthenticanddeeply personalvoiceissuchajoy,andit’s somethingpodcastinggivesyouthe spaceandtimetodo–slowly,butin‐exorably.
Ofcoursethere’smoneytobemade, withads,sponsorships,nativecon‐tent,subsdrivers,eventsandmore, butwhileweshouldneverfallinto theoldeditorialtrapofjustmaking goodcontentandworkingouthow tomonetiseitlater,youcan–maybe evenmust–startwithyourexpecta‐tionsappropriatelycalibrated.Ifyou focusonmakingtheformatand workflowsdeliverable,thisneedn’t beaplaythatcostsyoumuchin termsoftimeormoney.
Whiletherewardsmightatfirstbe hardtomeasure,andmeaneven whenyoucan,justfixinyourmind’s eyethatpersonsettingoutontheir commute.Youcanbethereason they’reexcitedforthenext45 minutesoftheirlife.That’sbothan incrediblypowerfulposi‐tionforabrandtobe in,andjustawon‐drousthingtobe abletogivean‐otherhuman.
