Hospitality Conference

Hospitality conference a boost for Christchurch Hospitality New Zealand’s conference in Christchurch next month is a show of support for the quake-stricken region and the local members are in sore need of that support. Canterbury branch president Peter Morrison said that while people were getting on with life and business, the city and the region really needed a boost. “We need people to come to the conference, it gives some positives for the region. We also need to keep our tourist attractions down here open and busy so that when things get back to normal they are still around. With other parts of the country enjoying a mini-boom thanks to the Rugby World Cup, Christchurch has seen little if any knock-on effects. “It’s made no difference at all down here really. A few people have come through and the fanzone seems to be going okay, but it hasn’t really made the bars any busier, Mr Morrison said. “Anything that is open is doing okay, but it’s been devastating for those people who aren’t open. We’ve got 150 bars and restaurants that are closed. Chief executive Bruce Robertson is looking forward to the conference, saying it’s a chance for both Christchurch and the wider industry to show their mettle. “We were always planning to have it in Christchurch this year and we stuck to that, he said. “It gives members from around the country the chance to show their support for Christchurch and it also gives Christchurch the opportunity to show that it can handle an event of this size. Mr Robertson said that this year the focus would be more on the industry itself rather than political issues around it. “It’s going to be a good one this year. What I really like about this one is that we’ve got some of the industry’s best operators telling their stories. We’re really focusing on learning from those who are among the best in the business; the biggest issue in the industry at the moment is profitability and people can

learn from those operators who are profitable. As well as keynote speakers such as Rory Glass and Brian Blake, delegates will also be able to attend workshops covering everything from profitability to music to social media and the early session on Day 2 is likely to be very popular as Luke Dallow, Judith Tabron and Jeremy Smith share the secrets of their success. And the highlight of the conference is the plush awards dinner, when the winners of the Excellence Awards are announced. The prestigious awards ceremony caps off the conference and this year’s line-up of finalists is as strong as ever. “I’m really pleased with the depth and breadth and quality of this year’s lineup, Mr Robertson said.

“The finalists come from all over the country and it shows the quality of what our members are offering to their customers. There would also be the chance to hear from the police, Government and liquor licensing inspectors about the liquor law reforms, an issue that Hospitality New Zealand has been working hard on. “We have a good idea of what’s coming up in the Alcohol Reform Bill and we’ve been successful in getting some minor changes to it. What we need to talk about is how hospitality operators interact with councils on licensing issues so that we can provide the best possible service to our customers. The conference is on November 2-3 in the Riccarton Park Function Centre and registrations are open now.

Hospitality Conference

It’s the final countdown The finalists have been chosen in the 15 categories for the Hospitality Association’s Awards for Excellence and the judges’ decisions will be announced at the gala dinner on November 3. Hospitality New Zealand chief executive officer Bruce Robertson said it was encouraging to see such a large number of entries coming forward in what had been a busy year for the industry– either finely balancing business continuity through the economic recession and recovery phase, or planning for Rugby World Cup. “The strength of entries in 2011 is credit to the fortitude of the industry as a whole. There is no denying that the hospitality sector, like many other sectors of the New Zealand economy, has faced a particularly tough period over recent years,” said Mr Robertson.

30

Hospitality October 2011

“However, those bars, restaurants, pubs and hotels which have founded their business models on investment, staff training, marketing, and innovation, have come through this period in a much stronger position than their competition. “What we have seen with these entries is that customers across New Zealand have voted with their wallets. There has been a definite ‘flight to quality’ – and that degree of quality is represented in the calibre of this year’s finalists.” Mr Robertson also noted that for the first time in many years, no single venue, business or region dominated the awards categories. The Hospitality New Zealand Awards for Excellence are judged on a comprehensive range of businessfocussed criteria – such as marketing strategies, training programmes,

profitability, operational procedures, and customer service. “Financial performance was a big factor in many finalists’ entries this year. Every business which was selected as a finalist outperformed the market in this respect. Ultimately, that performance is a reflection of how customers are selecting where they spend their disposable income,” Mr Robertson said. As part of the thorough assessment programme undertaken on all entries in the awards, venues are personally visited by the panel of judges to ensure the validity of the entry, and to verify all information and data put forward. “This is a huge process but underscores the credibility and transparency of the judging process,” Mr Robertson said. The finalists are listed on page 33.
