and attend one of the world’s biggest music events next year as part of the second New Zealand Contiki incentive. Next year’s Rock Around the World coincides with the youth market tour company’s 50th anniversary and Contiki general manager Tony Laskey said this one will be bigger and better than ever. “This year [2011] the top-sellers went to the UK to attend the V Festival and saw Eminem and Rihanna who were the headline acts. It was a huge event and next year will be even bigger,” said Laskey. “In Australia, it’s the biggest industry event out there. We’re only in year two doing it from New Zealand but already there’s this momentum and desire because the people who did it in 2011 have come back and spread the word about how good it is so we’ve got agents that are really hungry to be a Contiki topseller to get on this trip.” The top agents will receive return airfares to an overseas destination, a

model that they actively promote. In tougher economic conditions, brokering has really come to the fore. It’s a very cost effective way of operating your business and with the many advancements in technology working from home has never been easier.

What were some of the challenges you have faced in setting up Travel Managers? The only real challenges have been (and continue to be) balancing the staffing levels to the volume of business being transacted. We work on tight margins given our 90/10 commission split so getting growth and ensuring there is quality support in place is paramount. Also, convincing someone to move from the safety of a salaried position to that of a commission based broker is always challenging. The returns can obviously be very rewarding but taking those first steps is always a big decision for most.

What are your main goals for this business in the future? How do you see it evolving in the marketplace? We’re targeting a turnover of $100m per annum and believe this is achievable within the next two years. We expect to hit 200 brokers over the same period. We have had a real focus on the levels of

hotels they have protracted rates with and there are no exceptions.” Carson Wagonlit Travel (CWT) have seen a significant increase in the amount of companies using their services since the recession. CWT programme management director Val Feuell said many companies have taken advantage of lower priced products and show no signs of moving back to pre-GFC products. “Coming out of the GFC we saw a lot of clients from the New Zealand market go from business class to economy long-haul. Whilst we’ve seen some of those policies change, we have largely seen a move to premium economy and a lot of clients haven’t returned to business class. I suppose the real pain of change occurred, people got

used to it and I think companies have taken advantage of that,” said Feuell. “We’re also seeing low-cost carriers become more acceptable in business than it was pre-GFC.” House of Travel representative Brent Thomas said it will be some time before business travellers move back to highgrade travel. “There was a shift in 2009 from the premium end of the market down to the more mid-stream and it’s always harder to get a CFO to sign off on moving the budget back up. So whilst we are seeing some movement towards the five-star properties and the front of the plane, it’s certainly not to the same degree that it was pre-2008,” said Thomas.

www.traveltrade.co.nz | November / December 2011

Since the recession hit, a new era of corporate travel has emerged with companies shifting their priorities and looking for more ways to save money. Accor Asia Pacific general manager communications Peter Hook said businesses have used the recession to crack down with tighter travel policies and many are employing the help of Travel Management Companies (TMCs) to help them do it. “Travel policies for corporate travel became rather lax during the mid-2000s but the global financial crisis (GFC) gave companies the opportunity to really tighten travel policies. In a lot of cases they employed TMCs to enforce those; meaning employees have to travel on certain airlines, they have to stay at the

Pullman Hotel at Sydney Olympic Park But it’s not all bad news. Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs) in New Zealand are beginning to find their feet again, albeit on a much smaller scale. Hook said Accor has recognised this and has started rewarding SMEs with discounts. “A big company with thousands of room nights is obviously going to get higher discounts than five workers who might do 50 room nights over a few years. The smaller businesses aren’t necessarily able to get the discounts so we have been tackling this with a new programme called The Way of Business. It means that SMEs get an immediate 10 per cent off the best internet rate if they’re part of our loyalty programme, AClub. So while they’re not able to compete with the big companies they do get some sort of reward and discount for being loyal.” Cathay Pacific Airways (CX) marketing manager New Zealand Ian Herald said the airline has observed corporates from SMEs starting to travel again but, as Feuell mentioned, they have moved further down the plane. CX hopes their upcoming premium economy will help to ease them back up again.

16

“We do see a market, particularly with the corporate traveller, who wants a bit more but is not prepared to pay a lot more,” said Herald. CX will launch their premium economy product from March next year. Heritage Hotel group communications manager Susan Gibson said in the accommodation sector most businesses have been opting for smaller rooms since the recession. “There’s definitely a no frills approach from corporate now because most of the business travellers do contract work so the corporates are looking for more moderate accommodation like a superior room as opposed to a suite but we look after our regular guests anyway,” said Gibson. “We have a lot of long-stay guests so they really appreciate our suites which have their own separate laundry and lounge from their bedroom so they can actually shut their bedroom door and get working at the desk. They can conduct a business interview or meet clients within their suites at the hotel which is very popular.” CWT’s Feuell said they have noticed clients are sticking to that no-frills approach

with regards to accommodation and many hotels are fighting hard to keep their longstay guests. “During the recession, five-star properties dropped their rates to four-star prices but those rates are now rising because demand is back in the marketplace and therefore we are seeing those clients that did have a five-star policy move to four-star accommodation,” said Feuell. “We are also seeing the re-introduction of VIP hotel programmes so they have one programme for everybody and another programme for the VIPs. That’s how hotels are trying to get around the five-star issue, by having two separate programmes.” Accor’s Hook said loyalty programmes have recently become big business. “The landscape for corporate travel in New Zealand has changed dramatically in one year with the demise of Hyatt and Westen so it is a new playing field and it has localised the industry a lot more,” said Hook. “Price and loyalty are two of the most important factors when it comes to choosing a hotel for corporates because if it’s a matter of $5 and you’ve got a loyalty programme

in place and you’re earning more points for yourself you will look for the one that gives you the loyalty returns.”

Connecting on the road

they can do it through email or text equally as easily as calling so it doesn’t necessarily disturb other passengers and they can’t be contacted themselves so they’re the ones who have to initiate contact.”

Smart travel Smart phones are becoming the way of the future and businesses are beginning to see the advantages of using them to save money. Feuell said CWT offers tools to help travellers remember their cheapest options. “If they are doing anything out of policy then one of our tools tells them they have done something wrong and they need to do something else,” said Feuell. “Say I booked a flight to Sydney, I get a message that says don’t forget to take the train into the CBD rather than a taxi.” Feuell said she is seeing the smart phone become more of a necessity than luxury with CWT clients. “Travellers want everything at their fingertips,” said Feuell. “They want to make sure they’ve got their itinerary on their phone, they want to be able to check in from their phone, book flights etc, so we’re seeing that a lot more.”

17

www.traveltrade.co.nz | November / December 2011

As bed and breakfast slowly turns into bed and broadband, hotels are still charging high fees for what has become a necessity for the average business traveller. Hotel groups in the past have said that fees will come down, but it remains a contentious issue. Gibson said the fees hotels charge depend upon its supplier. “The fact is there is only one or two operators in Auckland that are providing high quality broadband,” said Gibson. “If you talk to most of the hotels in Auckland, we’re all using the same company, so there is a net cost for that because it is provided as an outsourced product. There is a set cost involved. It’s not like we have access to high quality internet ourselves - it’s the suppliers who do the billing.” Accor’s Peter Hook has predicted that free basic connection will become available in the near future but anything more than that will still have fees attached. “Hotels do understand what the public wants.

Corporate travellers are doing a huge amount of work – Skyping to colleagues in America, putting together Powerpoint presentations and they want high-speed fast internet and that does cost money, simple as that.” CX’s Ian Herald said the airline is planning to roll out a major new connectivity next year, but whether onboard WIFI is something that corporate travellers want is yet to be confirmed. “There’s quite an open debate about whether people want it (onboard WIFI) or not,” said Herald. “It’s an interesting one. With corporates, it’s their chance to take time out knowing they’re not in contact with people. It’s a very individual thing and certainly a lot of research is going on about how much access you give people on their phones.” Emirate country manager Chris Lethbridge said full connectivity hasn’t been a problem for them with many passengers opting for either email or text as their main form of communication. “It’s there if people need to use it. It doesn’t mean that 300 telephones are going to go off at once, it just means that there is that capability for people who need to contact someone to make a change and

Expedia commission changes Expedia Travel Agents Affiliate Program (TAAP) has increased the commission on air bookings when it is booked as part of a package. Agents now earn 10 per cent or more on land content and 1.5 per cent on air content for Expedia package bookings no matter what carrier is booked. The change means agents can earn commission on Expedia packages even when the flight is with a low cost carrier who generally offer no commission at all. Conversely, Expedia will stop paying commission on bookings for stand-alone flights. “The massive expansion of destinations supported by our airline partners has vastly increased our capacity and competitiveness in all regions,” said Expedia manager of travel agent distribution Stuart Udy. “We provide great package product to our agency partners and enable them to

Expedia offers access to numerous carriers, which are not available through traditional GDS channels so this is a great additional option for agents.” As a trade off, Expedia has eliminated commissions on stand-alone air. “Stand-alone air was such a small part of the agent program that we decided to cut it and increase commission on the package component,” said Udy. “By doing this, we know we can offer agents a real return for their efforts and they can pass the great savings onto their customers.” www.traveltrade.co.nz | November / December 2011

To add to the adventure the tour overnights at a forest station and in a hill tribe village.” SpiceRoads offer something for riders of all abilities and style preference (mountain bike, road bike or touring). “Our riders rely on us to take care of the basics such as providing safe water to drink while riding, tasty and healthy food as well as clean accommodation. We take the worry out of travelling to a foreign country while still providing a local experience. As language is often a barrier in Asia, our local guides open up a world to them that they wouldn’t get to know otherwise.” www.spiceroads.com

Snow report Japan is renowned as one of the world’s top skiing destinations but clients who have been there, done that may be enticed by Hokkaido Powder Guides (HPG) back country tour options. These tours go so far out of the way an avalanche course is included. HPG director Chuck Olbery said the tours were only suitable for advanced and expert clients with powder experience. “We do guide private groups as well and these can be intermediate skiers. If clients haven’t had a great deal of soft snow experience we give them skiing tips.” Olbery said a reasonable level of fitness was recommended and safety equipment is a must. “All clients we take have beacon, probe and shovel as the safety equipment. For backcountry days, snowboarders will have snowshoes and collapsible poles and for the skiers, alpine touring bindings and skins for the ascent. “We highly recommend a guiding service for foreign backcountry skiers as there aren’t any English topographic maps available of the mountains and not much in the way of public avalanche forecasting at many ski resorts.” www.hokkaidopowderguides.com
