THE WALDEN CLUB The Walden Club has an exciting history that dates back to the 1970s. It all started with a man named James Berry who desired to join an already existing club in an attempt to connect with the local business leaders. However, Mr. Berry was denied membership owing to the fact that his family did not come from money. While this may have deterred most people from seeking membership in a club like this, it sparked a flame for Mr. Berry who then was inspired to start his own club based on diversity and acceptance. He partnered with the local business leaders, both men, and women, and thus The Walden Club was born. People were permitted to join the club without regard to their race, sex, creed, or lineage. At the epitome of fine dining in Chattanooga, TN you would be hard-pressed to find a more suiting restaurant than The Walden Club.
You may have seen this historic building from a distance, but without a membership, it is not likely that you have been able to experience everything this treasure has to offer. Misty Bolt shared a wonderful story about her experience at The Walden Club from college. She attended a Sorority Formal and had one of the most magical nights of her life stating, “I always knew I wanted to make it big and earn a membership to a place like this.”

DANIELLE LONER
Danielle Loner is an ambitious 18-year-old woman who discovered a passion for racing at a young age. Growing up she spent her weekends at the track with her family while watching her father and grandfather race. When she was just 14 she began saving money to purchase her own racing setup. By the time she was 16, she had finally found the right race car and trailer to fit her needs. She is now in her second year of racing and working her way toward the top. Most people start out small when they get into anything new, but not Danielle. Having always known that she wanted to be a racer she set her sights big by choosing to race a late model car. Late-model cars are considered the most sophisticated cars in dirt racing. When asked why this was the path that she chose, Danielle had this to say, “I already knew where I wanted to end up in racing, so instead of starting out in FWD (frontwheel drive) and working my way up I decided to start in the big cars, because why not?” Danielle’s hope out of all of her hard work is to pave the way for other female drivers out there to pursue their passion. Participating in a highly male-dominant sport is no joke, especially something as physically and mentally taxing as racing. Her advice to anyone out there considering being a racer is this, “I absolutely encourage anyone who is even thinking about racing to do it. I know that it can be intimidating, but it is such a worthwhile experience!”

While racing is a huge part of Danielle’s life, it is only a fraction of how incredible she is. When she is not on the track she holds two different part-time jobs while also finding time to volunteer in the community. Danielle has a deep connection to any cause that benefits veterans because of her brother who is in the military. To top all of this off, she was also involved in dual enrollment while in high school with Georgia Northwestern Technical Institute, the National Honor Society, Beta Club, and an FCA Leader! The sky is truly the limit for Danielle Loner. Lastly, Danielle would like to give a huge thank you to her father for everything he has done for her. From guidance to support he has always been there to cheer her on and without him, she would not be where she is today.
The sky is truly the limit for Danielle Loner. 8
Today people are eliminating carbohydrates from their diet like crazy! They do not understand them but love them. When I am performing an assessment, I ask for an example of a day’s intake of food. I hear people say, “ I love carbs but don’t eat them - they are fattening”. Or, one eats them and thinks he/ she is being bad and feels guilty. Food has no moral value - we need it to survive. Actually, carbs are our source of energy production. If a person replaces carbs with high protein foods, the protein-rich foods are not used to build muscle as they should be. Carbs spare protein stores being used to provide fuel since all carbs are turned into glucose (what we all use for energy) and they have the same calories/ gram as protein. People have been told not to eat anything white in color yet they love pasta, potatoes, and bread, but give them up or replace them with diet versions. Did you know that diet bread has half the calories as regular bread and may be filled with cellulose (substance humans cannot digest)? Do you want to eat foods you can’t digest or do you want to consume the real thing? Remember this: a carb is a carb. Enjoy them for their fiber and taste and satisfaction.

“See! The winter is past; the rains are over and gone. Flowers appear on the earth; the season of singing has come, and the cooing of doves is heard in our land.
The fig tree forms its early fruit; blossoming vines spread their fragrance. Arise, come, my darling; my beautiful one, come with me.” Song of Songs 2:11-13

THE NEW PREFERRED VASCULAR ACCESS OPTION- WAVELINQ
For many patients dealing with diabetes and the diagnosis of end-stage renal disease (ESRD), there are new procedures making strides to allow for easier access to care. The WavelinQ Endo AVF system is a non-surgical vascular access option for patients with chronic kidney disease (CKD) undergoing dialysis. This new technique is a minimally invasive procedure that creates an arteriovenous fistula (AVF) avoiding the need for open surgery. Dialysis is a procedure people with kidney failure undergo to clean and filter the waste in their blood. The surgeon creates an access point in the patient’s bloodstream where blood can be removed and passed through a dialysis machine, a process called hemodialysis. This machine will clean the patient’s blood and return it filtered and free from waste which is life-saving. To create the new Endo AVF your surgeon will insert two thin devices into the artery and vein of your arm through small needle punctures. Magnets align the devices, and a connection is made between the artery and vein in the forearm. Once completed, the surgeon removes the devices after the fistula has been created. The patient arm heals without stitches, and the AVF develops over a six to the eight-week timeframe.
The benefits of this procedure compared to traditional AVFistula surgery are: Minimally invasive Faster healing and recovery time No scarring Reduced infection rate Outpatient procedure At the Vascular Institute of Chattanooga, we want to perfect the outpatient experience for endovascular and interventional minimally invasive procedures. The WavelinQ Dialysis Access program is one step closer to achieving this goal for our patients, who deserve only the best knowledge, technology, and experience.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS: (FAQS)
What do the kidneys do? The kidneys are responsible for removing waste and excess water, helping to make red blood cells, and controlling blood pressure. What is Chronic Kidney Disease? Chronic Kidney Disease (CKD) affects millions of people worldwide. Patients that reach the final stage of kidney disease are categorized as End-Stage Renal Disease (ESRD). Once a patient gets ESRD, their kidneys no longer can keep up with the body's need to remove waste and water. How many people are affected by CKD? 15% of the adults in the United States. When my kidneys fail - what is next? Once your kidneys are no longer functioning normally or efficiently, you may have to undergo dialysis to help filter the waste from your blood. A connection between your vascular system and the dialysis machine is necessary for dialysis to be performed. What is hemodialysis? Access to the patient's bloodstream needs to be established to perform hemodialysis. The AVF creates the direct connection required for the blood to be taken from the body, cleaned through the dialysis machine, and returned to the body. Where can I learn more? dialysisready.com
