About Masks Successful infection control in the dental practice, hospital and clinic requires appropriate masks to fit your daily procedures. While surgical masks serve as a primary component of personal protective equipment, many healthcare workers do not think about important mask features and limitations. Here are some specific features which should be evaluated when selecting the right mask for you.

Read the labels. Make sure your mask meets the requirements for filtration efficiency. Do not get lost in technical information; try to stick to the basics and recognize the standards that must be followed. Educate yourself. Compare the claims of different brands to understand what benefit is provided. Take time to read about how you can increase your personal protection. It is your health and safety! Choose what you feel is right for you. Here are some features to check out: • Look for the overall value in terms of comfort, fit and protection. • Choose mask with high bacterial filtration efficiency (BFE) for better protection. • Select a mask that is easy to breathe through. It will reduce moisture build-up within the mask. • Look for comfortable nosepiece that easily conforms and stays in place. • Check if the mask is made from fabric that does not irritate the skin or induces an allergic reaction. • Test earloop bands or ties to reinsure a close fit, yet do not pull or add pressure. • Choose the right mask for the specific procedure (some procedures involving higher fluid, dust, fibre exposure or surgical treatments may require a different mask or level of protection). Allergies. To avoid allergic reactions, select a high quality mask made from latex-free and fiberglass-free materials. Some people might experience allergies to non-woven material; therefore they should consider using masks with a softer inner (tissue) lining to minimize this problem. Safe+Mask SofSkin masks are a great solution for those who have a sensitive skin. How often do you need to change your mask? • Every 20 minutes during procedures that generate heavy fluid exposure (mask, if used longer, loses its protective quality). • After one hour of normal use. • Always change your mask with each patient. Important: avoid re-using disposable face masks. They should not be shared, because they may become contaminated with germs (viruses and bacteria) that can be spread between healthcare workers. If your mask is damaged or soiled, or if breathing through the mask becomes difficult, you should remove the face mask, discard it safely, perform hand hygiene and apply a new mask.

How to put on a face mask?

Hold mask with colour layer and earloop fasteners on the outside of the mask.

Secure nosepiece comfortably over nose bridge. Pull mask down, fanning mask under chin.

Pull earloops tight around ears. Confirm mask is secure around circumference of face for customized safety.

This standard is intended to help to facilitate the choice of surgical face masks in the European market by standardizing the information and performance data required for the masks. There are three testing methods used to classify surgical masks:

European Standard EN 14683:2005

1. Bacterial Filtration Efficiency in vitro (BFE) Test is used to determine the amount of infective agent that is retained by the surgical face mask, which is directly related to the amount of bacteria released through the mask into the air. A higher BFE percentage indicates a better protection level for the patient against infective agents from the healthcare professional. 2. Breathing Resistance (ΔP) Test is used to determine the resistance airflow of the facemask. A lower breathing resistance indicates a better comfort level for the user. It means the mask feels cooler and is easier to breathe through. Also the mask will maintain its shape in a better way as there is less pressure on the material. 3. Splash Resistance Test is used to determine the resistance penetration of potentially contaminated fluid splashes. A higher splash resistance means the mask will protect the user in a better way against splashes of potentially contaminated fluid during a surgical procedure. European Standard EN 149:2001 According to the European Standard EN 149:2001, particle filtration half masks are classified as FFP1, FFP2 and FFP3 depending on their efficiency at filtering particulates and their maximum “inward leakage”. European Standard EN 149 defines the following classes of “filtering half masks” (also called “filtering face pieces”), which are respirators that are entirely or substantially constructed of filtering material. The European standard tests filter penetration with both dry sodium chloride and paraffin oil aerosols, after storing the filters at 70 °C and −30 °C for 24 hours each. The standard also includes tests on mechanical strength, breathing resistance and clogging. EN 149 also tests the inward leakage between the mask and face.

PFE - Particle Filtration Efficiency PFE measures the filtration efficiency of a mask using non-viable (non-living) particles that are fixed in size from 0.1 micron to 1 micron. A face mask relies on microfiber filter media technology to capture the submicroscopic particles generated by high-speed handpieces and lasers commonly in use. Higher PFE provides the wearer with increased protection.
