Value of Supplementary Materials
Supplementary materials can provide direct and indirect learning outcomes.
Direct Learning Outcomes
Supplementary materials reinforce learning of content by: Providing practice ● Enhancing memory (emotion) ● Accommodating different learning styles ● Maintaining attention and concentration levels ● Turning idle time into learning time ●
Indirect Learning Outcomes
Indirect learning benefits of using supplementary materials include: Increasing interest and motivation to learn ● Learning to work as part of a group (sharing resources, taking turns, cooperating) ● Learning to solve problems ● Following directions ● Providing physical movement ●
Variety as a “Supplementary Material
Learning requires attention. Variety heightens attention.
Variety in Teaching Techniques
Lectures, seatwork, posters, and games engage visual, auditory, and kinesthetic skills in different ways and in different degrees. Using a variety of formats to deliver content increases the probability of meeting every student's learning needs.
Variety in Classroom Management
Learning requires a positive attitude. Variety promotes a positive attitude.
Mix It Up!
Create an expectant atmosphere. “I wonder what we're going to do today?” ● Re-arrange desks. (If you can.) ● Bring in props. ● Dress up. ● ●
Learning Tools
Every job and profession has its tools. Students must learn to use learning tools. In addition to teaching English, we are teaching students to be independent and responsible learners.
Teaching Independence & Responsibility
Provide students with copies of essential information: ● Vocabulary lists ● Sample sentences ● Verb charts ● Returned work with grades or comments
The Tools of the Trade The benefits of the humble three-ring binder: Everything is in one place. It's a flexible organizing system. It's a filing, not a piling, system. File, don't pile.
Time for Handouts & Games
Handouts and games are necessary for students who finish early. Slower students also need an opportunity to play games. Lessons must be crisp, well-planned to allow time.
Educational Relevance of Games & Handouts
The educational relevance (as opposed to entertainment value) should be as high as possible. Do a task analysis. If the educational relevance of a handout or game is low, it should be used as a free-time activity.
