Trapani

The Arabs called Trapani Itrabinis,Tarabanis,Trapanesch and deeply marked the city with their presence, architecture, agriculture, art, language and culture. Arabs expanded the seaport, built new districts and they introduced the small property. The Arabs also introduced new productions, built hydraulic system, new fishing techniques and brought the seaport to its former glory. Muslims probably imported from Turkey technology "wind machines", those mills that for centuries characterize the coast of Trapani. Trapani became an important trading center. Trapani ships began to trade with the maritime cities of Pisa, Genoa and Amalfi and other towns of the Mediterranean Arab as Seville and Malta. Arabs had naval control of the Mediterranean western center. Sicily produced a remarkable economic and civil growth. Sicilians began to grow different products. The Arabs built many small villages that still preserve the Arab name “bagghi farmhouses. Thanks to these technical measures, agriculture science made great advances in the quality and quantity. 8

The irrigation system favored the cultivation of vegetables and expansion of orchards, such as citrus fruits, dates, apricots, mulberries, prickly pear and pistachio. The Arabs also brought the sugar cane. The exploitation of the coastal area between Trapani and Marsala dates from the time of the Phoenicians who planted tanks to extract the salt, and then they exported the salt throughout the Mediterranean basin. The land is watered by shallow and often characterized by high temperatures and climatic conditions (above all the wind that promotes evaporation) especially designed to extract this precious element, essential to human life. Salt was, of course, a hugely important commodity for the preservation of food and so the west coast of Sicily soon had a fundamental role to play in the daily life of thousands of people around the Mediterranean and in Europe.

The history of sorbet

Sorbet represents one of the most important ice cream types in their long and varied history. Initially closely connected with the availability of ice and expensive storage technologies, sorbet slowly became one of the most popular frozen desserts in Sicily. Sorbet is a frozen dessert that is made from sweetened water flavored by fruit and flower. The word sorbet comes from the Arab word "sherbet" fresh drink. Arabs introduced in Sicily the knowledge on how to make sorbets. In Medieval time, people needed snow to prepare the sorbet. People preserved the snow in draw and they covered it with straw. In the East, people discovered that the juice is thickened and cooled when mixed in a container covered externally with snow; then people also understood that the melting of the ice was slowed down by the addition of salt.
