Welcome We are very proud to welcome you to the second Medway River Festival, celebrating Medway’s maritime connections. This special river-themed day offers something for the whole family, from river processions and races to displays, exhibitions and talks. I do hope you will enjoy the day, whether taking part or relaxing and enjoying the vast array of activities and entertainment. Medway Watersports Trust display Royal Yachting Association - accredited Medway Watersports Trust runs fun water and land-based activities and courses all year round for over 12s, including dinghy sailing, power boating, kayaking, canoeing, rock climbing, cycling and archery. www.medwaysportscentre.org

10.45 – 11.15am

Rowing races and display Medway Towns Rowing Club - exhibition rowing races, fours and pairs, crewed by both junior and senior members of the club. Started in 1865 the club provides rowing facilities for everyone, whatever age, ability or ambition. For more information visit our stand or www.medwaytownsrowingclub.co.uk

11.15 - 11.35am

Steam Tug The VIC 56 is an 85ft steam ship, built in 1945 as part of the wartime shipbuilding program. For most of her working life, the VIC 56 was used in Rosyth naval base as an ammunition vessel. She is one of only a few steam tugs left so donʼt miss her voyage at the river festival.

11.35am – 12.15pm

River rescue with the RNLI and Sea King Helicopter – operations permitting A registered charity that saves life at sea, the RNLI have saved more than 140,000 lives. Operations permitting, they will run a man overboard exercise showing how they save lives. The distinctive bright yellow Sea King helicopter frequents the eastern skies daily. The crews are on standby 365 days a year providing a 24-hour military and civilian Search & Rescue service for the UK. This is the last year of the Sea King, so grab your chance to see it in action.

12.15 – 12.45pm

Fire Tug display A fireboat is a specialised watercraft with pumps and nozzles designed for fighting shoreline and shipboard fires. They are capable of pumping tens of thousands of gallons of water per minute. Based in Gravesend this firetug will operate a display of their water moving capabilities, throwing large arcs of water in every direction. Watch out you might get wet.

12.45 – 2pm

Medway Yacht Club - sailing races including Sonata, Squib, Wayfarers and the Dragons One of the leading dinghy and one-design keelboat clubs on the east coast, Medway Yacht Club is a fantastic place for all of the family to sail, whatever your ability. If you don’t own a boat, don’t worry - trail sails are offered at this friendly and lively club. www.medwayyachtclub.com

2 – 2.30pm

Hovercraft display Flying Fish hovercraft, based in Sandwich, both sell and offer opportunities to have a go yourself. So, whether it’s exploring mud flats and estuaries, glaciers or deserts, or just simply blasting around lakes and rivers, Flying Fish can help. www.flyingfishhovercraft.co.uk

2.30 – 4pm

Sail past A wonderful opportunity to see a range of historic vessels all come together on the River Medway. The sail past will include a number of historic motor yachts and working vessels, steam, motor and sail. A commentary to accompany the sail past will bring all of the vessels’ unique histories alive with a understanding of how important our river systems were.

Arctic expedition Arctic 2013 Expedition – Due to a theft from the Iceni, the Arctic expedition will not be able to take place this year. But the Iceni and her crew will be attending the event and looking to venture up to the Shetland Islands and around the British Isles raising funds for Macmillan Cancer Support. You can meet the crew, see the vessel and learn about their voyages.
