Prison of the Future
The idea of incarceration has changed over the years. Prison evokes an imagination akin to dungeons, and musty crowded places with little hope for rehabilitation and maximum focus on redemption. The taboo of putting people away in a facility very different from any architecture you see in your daily life adds to both the stigma of prison and offers little of the help that incarcerated people require.
A brief analysis of the various public programs such as public parks, schools, retail, galleries etcetera has helped to lay basic program diagram for the site. The residential scheme for incarcerated persons is based on a progressive tier model, where the stay of the resident is planned in phases of progression. Each of the residential blocks have a dedicated set of seminar rooms, art studios and workshops. These spaces are connected by a network of open spaces and common gathering areas that allow for maximum interaction within and beyond the facility. The incoming residents, are in close proximity to the staff quarters and have more mentoring initially, and as they come to the end of their incarcerated period, they move to more ‘free’ environ.

The steps provide access across the site. They also divide the otherwise continuous landscape into small intimate pockets that are conducive to interactions.

The residential scheme for incarcerated persons is based on a progressive tier model, where the stay of the resident is planned in phases of progression. Each of the residential blocks have a dedicated set of seminar rooms, art studios and workshops. These spaces are connected by a network of open spaces and common gathering areas that allow for maximum interaction. 6 / 45
A central portion of the site was further developed to a detailed design level. The corridors in the residential units are interconnected in a way that crowd control and security are at the forefront. The units have intermittent gathering spaces that encourage familiarity and allow for mutual surveillance.

The corridors of the residences create a non-contiguous pathways that can be secured when needed. These pathways and the arrangement of the units also allow for common communal gathering spaces.

Model Iterations
Poly-scalar models to be used for resolution of various details for the overall design and the detail chunk.
Various combinations of program arrangement were tried
via physical models. The permutations were informed by basic adjacencies. Resolution of details was achieved by increasing the scale of the physical model, so as to understand various micro-components in relation to each other.

All the design schemes above have similar planning and adjacency strategies. There is equal distribution of public programs like workshops, art rooms and seminar rooms along the residential units. The staff housing always forms the perimeter for the inmate residences. Placement of commercial programs like the restaurant, retail and even public programs like library and auditorium are placed along the roads to provide and engaging edge, so to provide a secure campus and an inviting edge that allows engagement with the program without isolating the residents from the ancillary programs.

Locus (n) a particular position, point, or place. (n) a curve or other figure formed by all the points satisfying a particular equation of the relation between coordinates, or by a point, line, or surface moving according to mathematically defined conditions. The extension to SCI_Arc aims at expanding the formers reach and providing a more interactive campus that integrates SCI_Arc’s connected-continuous spaces philosophy with the urban fringe that it shares.
SCI_Arc currently is housed in a continuous quarter mile long building. In the proposed extension, various programs are divided into chunks that are placed inside various interconnected objects, so as to afford a more campus like quality to the institute. These architectural objects offer diversity of forms while acting as a cohesive campus. There is an attempt to establish dialogue between the programs proposed within the extension and the current SCI_Arc building. Succinctly, the objective of the formal massing is to induce movement and establish a discontinuous architectural space without losing connectivity or cohesion of a campus.

The frame was the driving technique for spatial design. The frame however hides inside, hence transparent materials were used to bring out the aesthetics of the technique. This also helps keep the design monolithic and whole as intended.

Massing helps to divide the phase wise planning of the project and to create circulation corridors while still maintaining the overall monolithic aesthetics.

Entry-ways to SCI_Arc, these streets connect SCI_Arc to its immediated neighbourhood. The streets are derived as radial offshoots of the current building. These streets cut through the contectual monolithic form,

2 A secondary street buffers the pedestrain traffic and connects the various programs of new SCI_Arc.

3 This street network creates active voids that double up as activity or recreational spaces for both the offices and the SCI_Arc students creating free space for any visitor without compromising the security of the existing or proposed spaces.

The final massing opnes up SCI_Arc as a campus to its neighbours, actively participates as a moitored open space and passively serves as a background for current SCI_Arc building.

The programs are distinctively divided into 2 kinds. This also is a deciding factor for phasing. The SCI_Arc programs make up one part of the extension whereas the office spaces make up the other program chunk. 16 / 45

The courthouse has great significance as a public building, often shrouded in opaque monumental forms that signify dominance. Our version of the courthouse tells its story, quite frankly, with colours, opacity, reflections, often distorted giving a fair idea of where the action takes place, while hiding the actual proceedings. With our play in material transparency we are trying to strip away the ‘black’ cloak of mystery that usually tends to be associated with the aesthetics of a courthouse.
This transparency is orchestrated through both materials and actions. The facade colours inspired from LA skyline photographs, merge, stand out, fade in the ever changing cityscape. The interiors of the building reflect the similar layering as can be seen on the outside. The interior finishes are a constant interplay between transparent, opaque, reflective and translucent finishes that allows for internal and external reflections creating ambiguous moments within the building. The entries are raised so as to accommodate steps, to mimic the usual ‘climb’ seen in typical courthouses. The raised entry also allows for screening areas for various visitors before they are admitted in the building. The reflective finish allows for interaction amongst outsiders that are generally not allowed in.

Library + References Private libraries for judges and law clerks are loacted in the tallest building, without public access. It is served by a private elevator.
Judge’s Suite Ancillary programs are re-orinted at the second level for multi-defendents court. These include judge’s chambers, offices, holding cells, attorney offices amongst others.
Multi-defendent Courtroom Special proceeding courtroom housing multi-defendent trials have larger areas for public to watch proceedings. The public entries are segregated from law personel entry.

Public lobbies are stacked on top of each other, and have limited access to programs within. To ensure that the space and access is percieved larger than given, the walls of courtrooms are mirrored and the offices have a high gloss finish.

Courtrooms do not follow the typical plan at the multi-defendent courtroom level. Smaller En Banc courtrooms populate the floor in case of these levels.

Despite the apparent transparency, the secure programs stay within the core, giving just glimpses of what usually stays hidden. With the public at the periphery, the building screens itself with the people it serves. The courthouse interacts with the city, through its tectonic systems, indicating its hours of work. 20 / 45

The building is framed within the site with the help of its context has brought about decisions of material finish, accesses, and even program orientation. My design process entailed controlling and balancing its object like features with actual mandatory requirements. This can be seen through planning, material finishes and tectonic elements.

THE sYmBIOTE
The Symbiote

The Symbiote, an alien life form, the amorphous and the undefined. Symbiote, derived from the symbiosis, alludes to a quality of entities, that are interdependent but are mutually exclusive. The Symbiote, ever so malleable, draws upon its archetype, exaggerates its qualities and assimilates itself into the context. Developing this concept further, the design derives from the qualities of Paris. Then it is processed through alienating digital processes, an intentional intervention to form the Symbiote.
The mediatheque is a conscious effort to fit and otherwise alien structure into the Parisian rationale. Sculpted according to both the needs of the program and the aesthetic cues from its context, the building tries to emulate familiarity through various hints in it’s final from. The process intensifies and exaggerates the notion of texture, details, resolution and scale. The Mediatheque, the symbiote, becomes the antagonist to the bibliotheque, as it reveals itself through sneak peeks and tries to combat the cityscape.

Feature walls screen the windows from direct light, providing daylighting to the interiors. The skylight gives way to ambient light inside.
The mediatheque draws in ample light through the skylight, providing ambient lighting to the reading floors via atrium.
The walls also mimic the pitched roofs of the buildings in the immediacy of the mediatheque.
The street level entry is designed to resemble a colonnade, ensuring aesthetic and spatial continuity of the Parisian facade.

The massing of the bibliotheque derived from its surroundings, makes it stand apart rather than blend in. The extrusion of alpha images across X,Y and Z axis mimics the process of drawing plans and sections; but here context is literally used as is, giving the final building an alien look.

This exercise focused on the design development of the Federal Courthouse ( designed in the previous term). Public Atrium
Stone veneer is used as the finish material for the skin. It is supported on a steel framing.
Aluminium panels are placed along the periphery of the courthouse on all sides except the North facade.
The roof of the Public Atrium too features PV panels. The roof is lifted up from the rest of the surface so as to allow light to enter through periphery.
This facade has windows in it, that frame tinted glass.

Openings in the Skin
Steel I-sections and flat sections are used to create a diagrid mesh that acts as a support for the stone veneer skin above.
Metal louvers are placed on the periphery of the building at the courthouse levels. These louvers allow greater control over light entering the interiors.
Since the stone veneer is a translucent material, there are openings in the skin to let natural light in. These openings are a part of the steel diagrid and structural elements of the opening rest on the steel system.
The steel support system acts as a form active system and partially holds its own weight. It is additionally supported on ground.
The louvres are supported on braced trusses that hold the periphery of the floors.

The LineUp
This exercise is based on the idea of exploration of lines and surfaces and their superposition on one another. Using grasshopper scripts to generate many iterations, the final assignment was collage of models photographed by the use of robots which were then superimposed to make a composite to resemble the original object.

Shantivan
‘Shantivan’ is a luxurious residence for a single family and their esteemed guests. Spanning over 70000 sq.ft, the house is divided into many wings. As an intern and then an architect I have mainly worked over the design and the detailing of the interior spaces along with some landscape design. Making detailed drawings for the interior furniture and making as built drawings of the house.
Spaces in this house intermingle and seamlessly connect one another. This is a house that closely embraces the outdoors and achieves a structure of spaces beyond boundaries. Visually stimulating, the carefully orchestrated play of light, the warmth of its interiors, it’s remarkable scenography with defining art, all together sets out an memorable living experience for the family. These multiple and varying dimensions has indeed been the single factor for its oneness and the realisation of ‘ A House Together’. VIDHAAN BHAVAN Competition Entry, Architect , P. K. Das & Associates, Mumbai
Vidhaan Bhavan
Vidhaan Bhavan was a invited competition for the design of the Legislative Assembly of Raipur. Spanning over 550,000 sq.ft, the assembly has a variety of programs that range from kitchens to congregational halls. I was one of the chief designers for this competition and was responsible for both the design and execution of the final document, including preparation of the tender.
We developed our design ideas for the Naya Raipur Vidhan Bhavan, coupled with very careful assessment of functional requirements and their spatial needs, reflected in the plans. The library building and the facility Center are proposed as independent buildings in order to facilitate their use and accessibility by all, at all times without necessarily disturbing the privacy and exclusivity of the core legislative functions and areas. Separate entrances, exits and circulation spaces for legislators, administrators, visitors and Governor along with VIPs have been proposed. The central hall is a distinctly independent landmark structure placed at the centre of the complex, seen and realized from within and outside at all times. A visual delight and a landmark for the Naya Raipur Capital Complex.
