Fork Lift Truck A forklift truck is a powered industrial truck used to lift and transport materials. The modern forklift was developed in the 1920s. The forklift has since become an indispensable piece of equipment in manufacturing and warehousing operations. The material to be lifted is placed on a wooden platform called pallet. The fork pair of the forklift is inserted under this pallet and a hydraulic or electric power lifts the load, which then is driven to the desired location in the warehouse and then placed carefully. Let us create a forklift truck driven by electric power.

How to operate: Toggle the switch up or down to lift or lower the pallet. The rear wheels have steering mechanism that can steer the forklift in the direction required.
Lesson to be learnt: Chain Drive: Chain drive is a way of transmitting mechanical power from one place to another. It is often used to transfer power to the wheels of a vehicle from the shaft attached to engine. Chain drives can be easily spotted in bicycles and motorcycles.
Worm wheel Drive: A worm drive is a gear arrangement in which a worm (which is a gear in the form of a screw) meshes with a worm gear (which is similar in appearance to a spur gear, and is also called a worm wheel). The major advantage of using a worm wheel drive is that, it is a one-way drive, which means, spinning the worm gear can rotate the spur gear but vice-versa is not possible. The worm wheel drive ensures that the heavy load lifted by the forks do not fall down suddenly, even when power is switched off, thus increasing the safety factor.
