Castle Draw Bridge A bridge is a structure built to span physical obstacles such as a body of water, valley, or road, for the purpose of providing passage over the obstacle. A drawbridge is a type of retractable bridge associated with the entrance into a castle surrounded by a moat. This type of a bridge was used to secure the castle from enemy’s invasion. Once the king had safely entered the castle, the soldiers would rotate a handle that would pull the bridge up to close the doorway. The handle is attached to a winch over which a rope or a chain was wound, this chain is in-turn connected to the bridge.

How to operate: Rotate the crank (hand pedal) to either lift or lower bridge’s span that doubles as the castle’s door.
Lesson to be learnt: Pulley: A pulley is a wheel on an axle that is designed to support movement of a cable or belt along its circumference. Pulleys are used in a variety of ways to lift loads, apply forces, and to transmit power. A pulley is also called a sheave or a drum and may have a groove between two flanges around its circumference. The drive element of a pulley system can be a rope, cable, belt, or chain that runs over the pulley inside the groove. Hero of Alexandria identified the pulley as one of six simple machines used to lift weights. When more than one pulley are used, the effort needed to lift a weight can be further reduced.. Pulleys are also assembled as part of belt and chain drives in order to transmit power from one rotating shaft to another.
Chain Drive: Chain drive is a way of transmitting mechanical power from one place to another. It is often used to transfer power to the wheels of a vehicle from the shaft attached to engine. Chain drives can be easily spotted in bicycles and motorcycles.
Winch: A winch is a mechanical device that pulls (winds up) or lets out (winds out) any rope or a chain attached to it. In its simplest form it consists of a big reel attached to hand crank. A similar winch can be seen attached to an army truck that pulls a variety of machinery.
