Chalk Turning lathe A lathe is a machine tool which rotates the workpiece on its axis to perform various operations such as cutting, sanding, knurling, drilling, or deformation with tools that are applied to the workpiece to create an object which has symmetry about it’s axis of rotation. Like a potter, who rotates the wheel and shapes the clay into pot, a lathe machine rotates metal, wood and other materials. Examples of material created using a lathe are circular drawer knob, machine shafts etc. In this pack, you would learn to assemble a lathe capable of turning and cutting a piece of chalk.

How to operate: Fix a chalk-piece on the lathe chuck using rubber bands and switch on the motor. Using a sharp edged tool like a pin or paper cutter, cut the chalk while it is rotating to create required shapes.
Lessons to be learnt: Pulley: A pulley is a wheel on an axle that is designed to support movement of a cable or belt along its circumference. Pulleys are used in a variety of ways to lift loads, apply forces, and to transmit power. A pulley is also called a sheave or a drum and may have a groove between two flanges around its circumference. The drive element of a pulley system can be a rope, cable, belt, or chain that runs over the pulley inside the groove. Hero of Alexandria identified the pulley as one of six simple machines used to lift weights. When more than one pulley are used, the effort needed to lift a weight can be further reduced.. Pulleys are also assembled as part of belt and chain drives in order to transmit power from one rotating shaft to another.
Belt Drive: Belt drive is a way of transmitting mechanical power from one place to another. It is often used to transfer power to the wheels of a vehicle from the shaft attached to engine.
