Earthquake meter This is a simple instrument that measures vibration of the surface it is kept on. If aligned horizontally and kept on leveled surface undisturbed, it can measure movements of the Earth’s surface, in case the Earth shakes. This instrument comprises of a paper roll that slides under a pen. This pen is mounted freely such that it’s free to swing like a compound pendulum. At normal instances, the pen sketches a straight line on the paper. If the table shakes, the pen swings accordingly and creates an intensity graph as the paper slides. This instrument is not very accurate, but it does demonstrate the principal, very well. This kit is for educational purpose only and the output cannot be treated as an indicator of shake intensity.

How to operate: Switch on the motor that drives the paper roller. Keep the assembly on a table. Shake it for a while and note the intensity graph.
Lesson to be learnt: Pendulum: A pendulum is a weight suspended from a pivot so that it can swing freely. When a pendulum is displaced sideways from its resting equilibrium position, it is subject to a restoring force due to gravity that will accelerate it back toward the equilibrium position. When released, the restoring force combined with the pendulum's mass causes it to oscillate about the equilibrium position, swinging back and forth. The time for one complete cycle, a left swing and a right swing is called the time period. Each pendulum swings with a specific time period, which depends on its length.
