he coil baskets as the name implies are made from coils of grass. The leaves from date palm are wrapped and stitched every time to make a continuous stitched coil basket. The best coil baskets are made by American Indians in the United States. The different tribes there make beautiful coil baskets. African tribes from different African countries make delightful coil baskets. Pakistan is also on the map of the world with few other countries to make exceptional coil baskets. One day some of these baskets will be in museums around the world. The baskets from Pakistan come from Southern NWFP areas and also from Southern Punjab Saraiki Areas. These baskets are very environmentally friendly as they are made from grass called “sur”, date and mizri palm leaves. These skilled artisans like magicians conjure up the most captivating products like hand woven baskets from their bare hands. The palms shed leaves regularly so no trees are harmed in order to make the baskets. No pollution is created while making these baskets and there no waste materials.
The areas where the baskets are made are one of the poorest in the nations so poverty elevation results each time one buys these master pieces. Truly, one day these baskets will be a rare commodity and become a valuable addition to one’s home. They can be passed down the generations as they are strong enough to grow old gracefully. 2

These baskets are made really fine. Each stitch is placed with precision. The designs in these baskets are very complicated and can only be produced by skilled artisans. Their production is slow as each basket takes a weak to finish. The sizes of these particular baskets range between 14 inches to 16 inches in diameter. The baskets on the smaller side of this range are often finer and more delicate. The bigger ones are substantial and more defined. HAND WOVEN POTTER BASKETS (large)
The hand woven baskets as the name implies are like big earthen pottery. The shapes and sizes of these baskets vary and add beauty to the product. Some are taller while others could be rounder and fatter. The sizes normally are 18” high to 24” high. The material used are date tree leaves and river grass known as “SUR” in the local area. Also, some of these baskets are made from “mizri” palm, which is a local palm grown in the area. These coil baskets are estimated to have 3,000 to a staggering 10,000 stitches that are all done by hand. For anyone it is just agonizing to even count these stitches leave alone actually stitching the basket. A single hand woven potter basket takes almost seven days to weave. We believe that one day these truly amazing pieces of art will eventually become extinct as people from this area are moving to other profitable jobs. Assortments only.

This basket is often called a snake basket. The snake man would often visit the neighborhood. The kids would get together and the snake man would pull out his basket. A black cobra always emerged from the basket and danced to the beat of the flute. The basket provided the snake with a natural habitat as it is very environmentally friendly. This special basket is also called a “Tortilla Basket�. It keeps all your bread and tortilla warm and fresh. The base of this basket only touches the table in the centre and the rest of the base is elevated to provide air circulation from the bottom as well. Made in a rainbow of colors, the weave of these Saraiki baskets is quite intricate. First a simple coil basket is woven. Then the basket is woven again by overlapping leaves over several coils making beautiful designs. These baskets are woven in the Saraiki belt areas of Southern Punjab.
