LONDON Greater london has a population of 8,5 million (2014) and since 2000 the amount of daily cycling journeys has more than doubled. The number went from 290.000 in 2000 to 610.000 journeys a day in 2014, that’s 23 million a year which is a 5% increase since 2013. In 2014 there have been 13 fatal accidents and 419 serious injuries.

CONCEPT To take into account that commuters need to carry items and need to dress in a classy way, I thought of looking into bicycle infantries. From the late 19th century until the first world war bicycle infrantries were popular throughout Europe and the United States.

CONCEPT To relate the garment as much too the city as possible, it’s impotrant to look at London’s heritage menswear brands, such as Burberry, Aquascutum and Belstaff, who have created technical biker coats and provided uniforms for the British army. Their history has played a major role in the current British mens wardrobe.

Taking inspiration from the city’s geography I’ve designed a few prints that could be used on the lining of the garment or detail pieces such as the under collar or pocket lining.

The first two toiles didn’t work very well because in both cases the extension piece had to be folded when changing the sleeve and there is no stiff material holding the extention in place. The third toile however works wel because the cuff stays inside the sleeve and therefore the stability is maintained while changing the sleeve.

DESIGN DEVELOPMENT Lap cover Attached to the left inside of the jacket is a folded panel that can cover the lap when it rains while cycling. The panel is from the hip down, where the front of the coat opens when in seated position.
On the calico toile I also explored how the lap cover panel can be attached between the facing and the lining.

DESIGN DEVELOPMENT Front pocket Flat easy access front pocket with only zip visible. Tape folded around the edges and covering the seams makes the flat pocketbag fully waterproof. The zip is sewn in flat and the zip stitchin is covered with tape on both in and outside. Corners of the pocket bag are taped to the shell to keep it in position. It’s sized to fit phones or other small electronics.

DESIGN DEVELOPMENT Backpack cover A lot of London’s cyclists wear a packpack cover in a high vis colour to protect their bag from the weather and for extra visibility on the road. I cut up the yoke to see if it could possible cover part of a backpack, realising that with and extra lightweight panel it would work perfectly.
The backpack cover has reflective tape on the outer and a heavier tape on the inside in a pattern of the foldlines. This makes it easy to fold the cover in quickly and hide it under the yoke.
