FREQUENTLY ASKED SAME-SEX MARRIAGE QUESTIONS THAT YOU'LL FIND USEFUL

MINNEAPOLIS IS EXCITED TO HOST YOUR SAME-SEX MARRIAGE, as we have always been one of the most heralded LGBT communities in the nation. HOW DO I APPLY FOR A MARRIAGE LICENSE?

The Hennepin County marriage license webpage has everything you need in terms of information on how to apply for a marriage license. They address how to apply, what to bring, the fee and additional information that you'll find helpful.

WHEN CAN I GET MARRIED?

Since August 1, 2013, marriage license applications for samesex couples have been available in Hennepin, Washington and Ramsey (metro area) counties and throughout Minnesota. A marriage license 6

obtained in one county is good anywhere in Minnesota. Check with your local service center for additional details. After applying for a marriage license, you must wait the mandatory five (5) days.

CAN I GET MARRIED IN MINNEAPOLIS EVEN IF I DON'T LIVE HERE? Of course. Anyone from any state or country can come to Minneapolis to be wed.

CAN MY SPOUSE AND I GET MARRIED IN MINNEAPOLIS IF WE WERE ALREADY MARRIED SOMEWHERE ELSE?
No. However, while you are unable to be remarried to the same person, your marriage license from another state or country will be legally recognized as valid in Minnesota. You can have a ceremony and celebration, but you can't apply for a second marriage license.

WINTER / SPRING 2015 | LGBT WEDDING GUIDE

ARE THERE ANY DIFFERENCES BETWEEN SAME-SEX AND OPPOSITE-SEX MARRIAGES?

No, however there is a difference at some states. The state no longer recognizes any differences between same-sex and opposite-sex marriages and the benefits, rights and responsibilities of being married. For more information, please seek legal counsel.

WILL OUR MARRIAGE IN MINNEAPOLIS BE RECOGNIZED OUTSIDE OF MINNESOTA?

As of Jan. 6, 2015, 35 other states and the District of Columbia have legalized same-sex marriage. They will all legally recognize your marriage performed in other states as a civil union. Other states will vary.

ARE THERE ANY DIFFERENCES IN THE MARRIAGE PROCESS BETWEEN SAME-SEX AND OPPOSITE-SEX COUPLES?

WHERE CAN I FILE MY MARRIAGE LICENSE? Once you fill out your marriage license, you can go to any one of the following service centers in Hennepin County:

No. The process is the same between the two marriages in Minnesota.

CAN WE CHOOSE TO BE DOMESTIC PARTNERS INSTEAD OF GETTING MARRIED?

Brookdale Service Center 6125 Shingle Creek Parkway Brooklyn Center, MN 55430 Hours: M-F (9 a.m. to 6 p.m.), Saturday (9 a.m. to 2 p.m.)

Yes, you can still choose to be domestic partners. However, domestic partners have a different set of rights than married couples.

WHERE IN MINNEAPOLIS CAN WE GET MARRIED? Anywhere. And, we've got a list of unique venues that we're sure you'll love. Please note, though, that under 363A.26 of the defense of marriage statute law, religious institutions have the right to refuse service to any couple regardless of sexual orientation.

COUPLE PROFILES

BEGINNING AT MIDNIGHT ON AUG. 1, 2013, former Minneapolis Mayor R.T. Rybak marked the first day that all Minnesotans can legally marry the person that they love. Former Mayor Rybak married 46 same-sex couples in a night-long celebration in the Rotunda of Minneapolis City Hall, which ended at 6:45 a.m. } }

he 46 couples that Mayor Rybak T married have been together a total of 734 years. Seven of the couples that former Mayor Rybak married have been together more than 30 years each.

Minneapolis residents Al Giraud and Jeff Isaacson, who are both big sports fans, met on Sept. 29, 2002, at a Tampa Bay Buccaneers football game, and have loved being together ever since.

In 2005, they held a commitment ceremony in Tampa, Florida, where they lived at the time. In 2008, Jeff, a Minneapolis native, persuaded Al, a native Floridian, to move to Minneapolis. Now Al shares Jeff’s love of Minneapolis and neither can imagine living anywhere else. Al and Jeff said, “Our friends and our family have seen us as married since our commitment ceremony eight years ago, but being legally married in our hometown of Minneapolis not only gave us the same rights as any other citizen, but affirms our relationship in the eyes of our city and community."

AL & JEFF, married at City Hall on August 1st, 2013

“We had considered traveling to Iowa to get married, but we had faith that Minnesota would welcome us before long. We couldn't be happier,” they added.
