connected to our history... The Admiral Fell Inn on Fell’s Point’s historic waterfront has risen from humble beginnings. William Fell, a Quaker from Lancaster, England who arrived in Old Baltimore in 1726, imported the flavor of Britain – most notably in the neighborhood’s street names (Shakespeare, Thames, Fleet, and Philpot, among others). In the “Point” as Fell’s 1,100 acres was known, there were some 350 early buildings, many pre-dating 1800 (an additional 200 others pre-date the Civil War). The Admiral Fell Inn consists of seven different buildings, some dating back to the 1770s and 1780s. The Anchorage, a legendary seaman’s hostel was established in 1889 by the Woman’s Auxiliary of the Port Mission to “maintain under Christian influence a boarding house for seamen, a home-away-fromhome, a social and recreational center where the seafarer might find safe refuge while in port.” In 1929, the Young Men’s Christian Association converted the expanded Anchorage into a 105bed Seaman’s YMCA with rooms so small that it was nicknamed “the doghouse.” Lodging was provided to as many as 50,000 sailors a continued >

year, and by the end of World War II, the cost of a dormitory-style room had risen to fifty cents a night; a single room cost $1.25 per night. This “home-away-from-home” continued to provide lodging through the mid-1950s. Baltimore’s bustling port was central to Maryland’s economy until the early 20th century. When the role of sailing ships declined in the 1930s, the community of Fell’s Point began to deteriorate along with it. The waterfront became a tough enclave of back-door saloons. Many of the properties were condemned in 1965 to make way for a new highway, I-95. A grassroots effort by community members to halt the destruction of one of Baltimore’s only intact historical neighborhoods resulted in the designation of Fell’s Point as Maryland’s first National Historic District. Federal funds for construction of the new highway were disallowed and Fell’s Point was spared. The cellars of the interconnected buildings of The Anchorage were turned into a cider and vinegar bottling factory known as the Vinegar Works. After the plant’s closing in the mid1970s, the buildings remained unoccupied until the Inn was created in 1985. Now an internationally acclaimed hotel, The Admiral Fell Inn offers intimate elegance – amidst the still-bustling working waterfront community. The Inn was chosen as a charter member of the National Trust for Historic Hotels of America.
Taxi has since grown from one small boat going “from nowhere to nowhere,” to an internationally acclaimed system serving 350,000 people per year, with a fleet of 13 boats and 12 landings throughout the harbor. Ride and sightsee
till your heart’s content with an all-day, on-off ticket. The landing is located just across the street from the Inn and is a great way to journey to the heart of the Inner Harbor. FELL’S POINT GHOST WALK Picture Fell’s Point, as it was, a rowdy seaport town, the birthplace of the sleek and dangerous clipper ship. Its streets full of sailors from foreign lands spilling off ships, immigrants anxious to start a new life, ladies of the night looking to make ends meet, and all the characters looking to make a living off the maritime industry. Given this explosive combination, is it any wonder that many spirits remained behind? Under the cover of night, explore the many haunted pubs, shops, and residences. But don’t stray too far from the group because you never know when you’ll find yourself face to face with the unknown. EVERY ROOM NAME TELLS A STORY As you walk through the halls of the Admiral Fell Inn, you’ll notice that each room is named after a historic figure that played a prominent role in the history of Baltimore and Fell’s Point. Who is your room named after? Can you find the Edgar Allen Poe and Francis Scott Key rooms? Feel free to wander the halls… the Admiral won’t mind. THE LONG AND WINDING… HALLWAYS How can the “second floor” of the Inn actually exist on two different levels? Why does a hallway make that many turns? All logical questions for a building… but there within lies the answer. The Admiral Fell Inn is not ONE building… it’s made up of seven different buildings dating back to the 1770s. Step outside and view the Inn from across Thames Street and you will see the Inn’s different buildings stretch all the way to the Horse You Came in On. AND WHAT STORIES THOSE BUILDINGS COULD TELL
FELL’S POINT FUN FACTS Edgar Allen Poe spent many days walking the streets of Fell’s Point. Legend has it that he had his final drink inside The Horse You Came In On, located right next to the Inn.
LOOK UP AND DRINK UP! Exit the Inn and go to your left. Just past Adela, in the upper corner of the building across the street you will see a faded original “Vote Against Prohibition” billboard. It must have been successful as Fell’s Point has more pubs per square foot than most places in the United States.
Fell’s Point is named after William Fell and the Fell family, whose grave is located down Shakespeare Street. Baltimore Schnooners, built in Fell’ s Point, were used by privateers during the War of 1812. British land ad sea forces attempted to destroy Baltimore in Septemeber 1814. This lead to the birth of “The Star Spangled Banner” which is celebrated daily at Baltimore’s Fort McHenry.
While he was enslaved in the 1830s, renowned abolitionist Frederick Douglass worked as a caulker in a shipyard on Lancaster Street. His legacy and the honor of the first African American owned shipyard is celebrated at the Douglass-Meyers Maritime Park, located at the end of Broadway.
In 1889, a legendary seamans’ boarding house was established and expanded into a 105-bed YMCA in 1889 housing 50,000 sailors a year. The role of sailing ships declined in the 1930s and Fell’s Point deteriorated. In 1965, many buildings were condemned to make room for a new highway, but community effort halted construction and Maryland’s first National Historic District was born. The cellars of the buildings were turned into a cider and vinegar bottling factory, which closed in the mid 1970s. The building remained unoccupied until the Inn was created in 1985. BALTIMORE IN PICTURES The hallways of the Inn are filled with the works of award winning A. Aubrey Bodine (1906 – 1970) a photographer for the Baltimore Sun's Sunday Sun Magazine for fifty years famous for capturing Baltimore on film.

FELL’S POINT PRESERVATION SOCIETY & VISITOR CENTER FELL’S POINT PRESERVATION SOCIETY The Preservation Society was founded in 1967 to stop the proposed extension of I-95 across the Inner Harbor. Had the Preservation Society not been successful in it’s ten year “road fight,” the highway would have demolished the Federal Hill and Fell’s Point communities, leveled Federal Hill Park and blocked the development of the Inner Harbor. To accomplish this, the Society led the effort to have both communities listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Fell’s Point became a Nationaly Registered Historic District in 1969 (making it the second historic district in the United States to receive that honor) and Federal Hill a year later. For over forty years, the Preservation Society has worked to maintain the 18th and 19th
