Pier 5 Hotel 711 Eastern Avenue
Admiral Fell Inn 888 South Broadway
The Pier 5 Hotel is right where you want to be – Baltimore’s premier waterfront boutique hotel delivers harbor views, unrivaled dining options and an exclusive guest experience directly adjacent to the National Aquarium.
The historic Admiral Fell Inn invites you to celebrate the past and present of charming Fell’s Point while perfectly blending an authentic residential-style destination experience with all the conveniences expected by today’s travelers.
It took more than 200 years to create an address this good! Henderson’s Wharf, which sits on the point of land that gave Fell’s Point its name, is named for John Henderson, a pre–Civil War merchant. In 1893, the Baltimore & Ohio Railroad built our present six-story building as a tobacco warehouse. Cargoes of tobacco from southern Maryland plantations were shipped in by rail down Fell Street, stored, then loaded onto ships for export across the seas. Since 1990, this premier waterfront address has been the home of the Inn, Condominiums and Marina at Henderson’s Wharf.
FELL’S POINT Founded in 1730 by William Fell, who was attracted by its beautiful, deep water and proximity to agriculture and thick forests, Fell’s Point became a shipbuilding and commercial center. Around1763, William’s son Edward Fell laid out streets and began selling plots for homes. The town grew quickly, and incorporated with Baltimore Town and Jones Town in 1797 to form the City of Baltimore. The area grew wealthy on the tobacco, flour and coffee trades through the
18th and 19th centuries. Some of the first vessels commissioned for the U.S. Navy were built in Fell’s Point shipyards, including the USS Constellation in 1797. However, the area became best known for producing topsail schooners, sometimes erroneously called Baltimore clippers, renowned for their great speed and handling.
more affluent to move into other parts of the city.
In 1893, the Baltimore & Ohio Railroad built our six-story building as a tobacco warehouse.
During the War of 1812, Fell’s Point built and supported dozens of privateers who preyed on British shipping vessels. Thus, Baltimore became a principal target of the British during the war, resulting in the bombardment of Fort McHenry. It was that battle that led Francis Scott Key to write what would become our national anthem, “The Star-Spangled Banner”. Fell’s Point, was a major immigration point of entry into the United States. Jobs were plentiful in shipbuilding and in the warehouses and factories, so many of the immigrants stayed in Fell’s Point. This added to the multicultural fabric of the area, but also caused the
Fell’s Point remained a shipbuilding center until the Civil War, when it could no longer accommodate larger ship designs. The shipping industry slowly moved away to larger facilities, and the area transitioned into a manufacturing center, with innovations in canning and packing. Eventually, much of the manufacturing left the city, resulting in urban decay until preservationists organized to save the area’s historic buildings. Those efforts, which stopped a 1965 highway construction plan that would have destroyed much of the neighborhood, resulted in Fell’s Point being named the second National Historic District in the United States in 1969.

FELL’S POINT GHOST WALK
Picture Fell’s Point, as it was, a rowdy seaport town, the birthplace of the sleek and dangerous clipper ship. Its streets were full of sailors from foreign lands spilling off ships, immigrants anxious to start a new life, ladies of the night looking to make ends meet and all the characters looking to make a living off the maritime industry. Given this explosive combination, is it any wonder that many spirits remained behind? Under the cover of night, you can explore the many haunted pubs, shops and residences. But don’t stray too far from the group because you never know when you’ll find yourself face to face with the unknown.

DISCOVER FELL’S POINT What Stories Those Buildings Could Tell!
FELL’S POINT FUN FACTS Fell’s Point is named after the Fell family and William Fell, whose grave is located on Shakespeare Street. Look up and drink up! On the corner of Broadway and Shakespeare, just past Adela in the upper corner of the building, you will see a faded original “Vote Against Prohibition” billboard. Baltimore schooners, built in Fell’s Point, were often used by privateers during the War of 1812. While he was enslaved in the 1830s, renowned abolitionist Frederick Douglass worked as a caulker in a shipyard on Lancaster Street. His legacy and the honor of the first African-American– owned shipyard are celebrated at the Douglass-Meyers Maritime Park located at the end of Broadway.
ADMIRAL FELL INN The Admiral Fell Inn is the Inn at Henderson’s Wharf‘s sister property here in Fell’s Point, and it too has a rich history. The Admiral Fell Inn encompasses seven different buildings. In 1889, a legendary seaman’s boardinghouse was established and later expanded into a 105-bed YMCA housing 50,000 sailors a year. The role of sailing ships declined in the 1930s, and Fell’s Point deteriorated. In 1965, many buildings were condemned to make room for a new highway, but community efforts halted construction, and Maryland’s first National Historic District was born. The cellars of the buildings became a cider and vinegar bottling factory, which operated through the mid-1970s. The building remained unoccupied until the Inn was created in 1985. As a benefit for staying with us here at the Inn at Henderson’s Wharf, you can attend the Admiral’s Reception and the Historic Ghost Tour at the Admiral Fell Inn. Details can be found on the center of this magazine.
HOLLYWOOD EAST Be sure to check out the “stars” of Fell’s Point. The City Recreation Pier – built in 1914 as a place for young people to meet and dance – received national attention in the 1990s as the fictitious police headquarters of the NBC television series Homicide: Life on the Street. Meg Ryan called Fell’s Point home and gazed at the stars from the Broadway Pier (by the water taxis) in the romantic comedy Sleepless in Seattle. Baltimore native and cinema director Barry Levinson also used Fell’s Point and other parts of the city for films such as Avalon, Tin Men and Diner.

You can even become a member of their Grand Marnier Club and have your own bottle stored for whenever you visit.
{THE RED STAR BAR & GRILL} Redstarbar.us | 410.675.0212 Red Star has a sophisticated but warm urban loft ambience. According to folklore, The Red Star gained its name and reputation from sailors visiting Fell’s Point. The sailors knew Fell’s Point was a good place to find a warm meal and a cold ale, along with more “intimate” necessities. The blue laws of the time prohibited the customary red lights in the district ... so resourceful women painted nautical red stars on the sidewalks, leading the sailors to their doors. Hence, The Red Star was born.

FELL’S POINT PRESERVATION SOCIETY & VISITOR CENTER 1724-26 Thames Street, Baltimore, MD 21231
FELL’S POINT PRESERVATION SOCIETY The Preservation Society was founded in 1967 to stop the proposed extension of I-95 across the Inner Harbor. Had the Preservation Society not been successful in its 10-year “road fight,” the highway would have demolished the Federal Hill and Fell’s Point communities, leveled Federal Hill Park and blocked the development of the Inner Harbor. To accomplish this, the Preservation Society led the effort to have both communities listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Fell’s Point became a National Register Historic District in 1969 (making it the second historic district in the United States to receive that honor) and Federal Hill a year later.
“...Tour the Robert Long House & Garden, Baltimore’s oldest surviving urban residence...” 8
