baltimore’s inner harbor... While Baltimore has been a major U.S. seaport since the 18th century, the historically shallow water of the Inner Harbor (prior to manipulation through dredging) was not conducive to large ships or heavy industry, most of which was concentrated in Locust Point, Fell’s Point, and Canton. In the first half of the 20th Century, Baltimore shared the disastrous decline of central cities around the World – dragged down by urban sprawl and the abandonment of the old harbors by the arrival of container ships after World War II. Rotting warehouses and piers lined the waterfront until it was gradually transformed with award-winning parks and plazas surrounded by office buildings, hotels and leisure attractions - including the National Aquarium, Maryland Science Center, Baltimore Convention Center, and Harborplace, which opened on the Fourth of July, 1980. With the success of the Inner Harbor in the 1970’s and ‘80’s, Baltimore became a worldwide tourist destination and model of urban planning and development, influencing more than 100 other cities and winning more than 40 national or international awards, including a citation by the American Institute of Architects in 1984 as “one of the supreme achievements of large-scale urban design and development in U.S. history.”

to its permanent, unique and offbeat collection, the museum also refreshes its museum-wide “themed exhibits” annually. HARBORPLACE & THE GALLERY

NATIONAL AQUARIUM IN BALTIMORE The Pier 5 Hotel is proud to be an official hotel of the National Aquarium in Baltimore, the most popular attraction in Maryland. The Aquarium is home to an astounding collection of more than 11,000 marine and freshwater animals, representing more than 600 species. Brilliantly colored Picasso triggerfish explore a coral reef. Dolphins breach the water in graceful leaps. Sharks glide through a shadowy world just an arm’s length away. Trek along a path winding through the lush greenery of a South American rainforest. Then dodge towering waterfalls in a red rock river gorge in Animal Planet Australia: Wild Extremes. Discover 1,800 animals found only in the Land Down Under. The Aquarium’s new 4D Immersion Theater will bring you closer to the sights, sounds and smells of the action, combining the high-defintion images of a 3D film with special sensory effects!

THE WATER TAXI Born in 1978 just as the harbor’s redevelopment was starting, the Water Taxi has since grown from one small boat to an internationally acclaimed system serving 350,000 people per year, with a fleet of 13 boats and 12 landings throughout the harbor. Ride and sightsee to your heart’s content with an all-day, on-off ticket.

AMERICAN VISIONARY ART MUSEUM A true Baltimore gem, the American Visionary Art Museum has been designated by Congress as America’s national museum for self-taught art. In addition

At the heart of the Inner Harbor, Harborplace & The Gallery is an urban market packed with the most popular retail shops in the country. With countless restaurants, a variety of eateries and an outdoor amphitheater offering free entertainment, it’s the perfect place to sip cool drinks and savor delicacies while you enjoy music, waterfront entertainment and beautiful harbor views. SEADOG CRUISES Enjoy this one-of-a-kind speedboat! This 50-minute Sightseeing and Speedboat Tour combines a fun and educational narrative of Baltimore’s historic sights with an exciting speedboat ride. The tour departs from Baltimore’s Inner Harbor and heads southeast on the Patapsco River towards Key Bridge and back.

There’s more to Baltimore than you see at first glance. Charming, historic neighborhoods surround the Inner Harbor, each filled with history, great food, boutique shops and plenty to explore! And best yet, you can get to them either on foot or by hopping aboard the water taxi. FELL’S POINT Get a feel for Baltimore’s British roots in Fell’s Point, named for an Englishman who started a shipbuilding company here in 1726. Historic 18th and 19th-century homes and warehouses line cobblestone streets named Shakespeare, Bond, Fleet and Thames. The famous two-masted schooner-style boat that helped win the War of 1812, was designed and built in Fell’s Point. Back in the waterfront’s more rugged days, sailors bellied up to the bar in scruffy saloons. Today you can browse among the historic waterfront’s eclectic boutiques and antique shops, grab a drink at one of the numerous bars or pull up a stool and listen to live music. Be sure to stop in and discover the Pier 5 Hotel’s sister properties – The Admiral Fell Inn and the Inn at Henderson’s Wharf. LITTLE ITALY The streets of Little Italy, awash with red, white and green Italian pride, are lined with Italian restaurants, from high-end fine dining to casual family fare. Little Italy’s modest beginning was as a residential refuge for Italian immigrants. On February 7, 1904, when the great Baltimore fire destroyed most of the city, the residents of the community lined the streets in prayer and the neighborhood was spared. That miracle is still celebrated every year in June at the St Anthony Festival. Little Italy is still a place where the traditional Italian values thrive – church, family and of course, food. Locals challenge each other at the bocce ball court on Stiles Street. And on select nights in the summer, crowds gather on the streets and under the stars for the Little Italy Open Air Film Festival.

HARBOR EAST Harbor East is a nine-block development project that has risen from the once undeveloped area between Little Italy and Fell’s Point and now connects the communities. Stylish restaurants grace the waterfront and beyond and include an upscale steakhouse, exotic seafood, Irish fare, Southern, organic, and traditional Italian. This on-the-rise area of the harbor is also host to a variety of boutique shops, an upscale movie theater, and two of the Harbor Magic’s partners – MAC Wellness Center and the urban escape, Spa Sante. FEDERAL HILL For a spectacular view of the harbor, walk up Federal Hill. In 1788, 4,000 patriots celebrated Maryland’s ratification of the US Constitution with a hill-top picnic and fireworks. Later, during the Civil War, General Butler hauled cannons uphill and turned them on nests of Confederate sympathizers. Wander cobblestoned Montgomery Street past 18th- and 19th- century homes that once housed sea captains and merchants. Grab some oysters and a beer at the historic Cross Street Market, the hub of this neighborhood. MOUNT VERNON Washington DC may have the more famous landmark, but the country’s first Washington Monument was built right here in Mount Vernon. Climb 228 steps up the 178-foot marble column for a bird’s-eye-view of downtown. Baltimore’s Gilded Age society built their mansions in Mount Vernon, which is also home to the Peabody Institute’s library and a former home of writer H.L. Menken. Take in groundbreaking theater at Center Stage, rated one of the top ten regional theaters in the country, or a performance by the internationallyacclaimed Baltimore Symphony Orchestra at the Meyerhoff Symphony Hall. The cultural anchor of Mount Vernon is the Walters Art Museum with a collection of more than 30,000 works of arts that span 5,00 years and five continents. It houses world-renowned Egyptian artifacts, medieval armor, Renaissance paintings and Faberge jeweled eggs.
