Why Mechelen?

The people of Mechelen are super-proud of their 300 listed buildings, three of which flaunt the UNESCO world heritage label: St Rumbold’s Tower, the Belfry of the Town Hall and the Large Beguinage. The city centre boasts no fewer than eight historic churches, each with its own distinctive style: large or small, Gothic or baroque, Rubens or Van Dyck.

Mechelen’s charm and conviviality are irresistible!

Surprising and authentic That’s Mechelen!

In the blink of an eye Mechelen is on everybody’s doorstep. The city is located in the heart of Flanders, midway between Brussels and Antwerp. From Brussels Airport to Mechelen is a mere 11 minutes by train. And whether you travel by train, plane or car from a neighbouring country, you’ll be here in the blink of an eye!

Pocket-size world city In Mechelen everything’s within walking distance. As you wander along the narrow streets, you’ll be able to feast your eyes on historical buildings and on so many charming restaurants and cafés that you’ll wish you could eat your way through Mechelen! And for a while at least, you can switch off and quietly daydream, for the centre is pedestrianized. You’ll find that the people of Mechelen greet you and are only too happy to offer a word of explanation.

Family-friendly city trip I’m going on a city trip and I’m taking... the kids with me! Combine a spot of history with activities the whole family will warm to. You can visit one of the largest toy museums in Europe, experiment at Technopolis, walk among the penguins in Planckendael and discover the city’s most picturesque nooks on a children’s trail, before falling into bed in one of Mechelen’s child-friendly hotels! And be sure to round off your visit with a family selfie at the top of St Rumbold’s Tower.

Memor able Mechelen

Mechelen has thousands of stories to tell. They come alive as you explore the streets

tip: Patrick (46) “I was amazed by the number of churches in Mechelen. In the historic centre I counted no fewer than eight. And each church has its own style. I discovered religious treasures and masterpieces by Rubens and Van Dyck. In particular, Peter Paul Rubens’ ‘Triptych of the fishmongers’ in the Church of Our Ladyacross-the-Dyle has stayed with me. You could have heard a pin drop in the church and on that gloriously sunny afternoon the play of light through the modern stained-glass windows was magnificent.”

On the roof of Mechelen

tip: Alice (60)

St Rumbold’s Tower can be seen from all directions as it soars “The sounds of the carillon could be heard all over the city. As we wandered round proudly above the city. Prepare yourself, because ‘the giant of the Saturday market, I cheerfully hummed Mechelen’ is 97 meters high! Fortunately, on the way to the top along to the tunes, which weren’t dull old numbers, but pop classics! Who wouldn’t you can stop off in the six rooms – each of which serves a different recognize Abba’s ‘Thank you for the purpose – and catch your breath. And it’s an impressive climb: where music’ and Frank Sinatra’s ‘My Way’! else in the world do you find two carillons in one tower? The Skywalk In the afternoon we climbed St Rumbold’s Tower and I could see the city carilloneur at the top affords a view that will leave you speechless. Note the live at work!” Brussels Atomium making eyes at you in the distance and see if you can pick out Antwerp Cathedral.

Home of the Margarets Highly capable, ambitious women are nothing new in Mechelen! Long ago we had female sovereigns like Margaret of Austria and Margaret of York who added a touch of colour to Mechelen’s history. You’ll find their palaces in the city centre. The Court of Savoy, popularly known as the Palace of Margaret of Austria, was the first renaissance building in the Low Countries. There is a particular magic about its garden, a green oasis of peace in the heart of the city. Step inside and you lose all sense of time and space.

Labyrinth of narrow streets

tip: Carla (39) “In addition to historical landmarks, I also came across surprising architecture in Mechelen. Brand-new residential areas, stunning renovations and other architectural gems are scattered throughout the city. My favourite one? No doubt about it: Lamot, a former brewery that has been converted into a beautiful conference and heritage centre. After our city walk along the Dyle Path, we relaxed on the Vismarkt, where I could have easily admired the impressive building for hours!”

Large Beguinage The quietest spot in Mechelen has to be the Large Beguinage in the shadow of Het Anker city brewery. The beguines, who used to occupy the authentic little houses in the Beguinage and scurry along its cobbled streets, have been replaced by ordinary – if enviable – citizens. Lose yourself in the labyrinth of little streets and soak up the peaceful atmosphere. The Mechelaars are proud of their Large Beguinage which UNESCO has so rightly recognized as world heritage.

Kazerne Dossin An emotionally-charged silence hangs over the Kazerne Dossin. The site is now home to the Memorial, Museum and Documentation Centre on Holocaust and Human Rights, but between 1942 and 1944 the old barracks were in the hands of the occupier. They were the assembly point for the more than 25,000 Jews and gypsies who were put on the train here and transported to Auschwitz-Birkenau concentration camp. The Museum and Memorial tell their moving story. The celebrated architect bOb Van Reeth designed the brand-new museum with its contemporary but understated architecture. Each of the 25,000 stones embedded in the façade with its bricked-up windows symbolizes one of the victims who passed through here. Kazerne Dossin is an extraordinarily intense place of remembrance. The museum explores the roots of mass violence and analyses its underlying dynamics and mechanisms. So as well as historical facts and figures, you are also given new insights into human rights and conflicts today. In 2014 Kazerne Dossin won a special commendation in the European Museum of the Year awards.

Family-size cit y

Mechelen is a children’s paradise!

Visit our city, the Toy Museum, Technopolis or Planckendael. There really is something for everyone.

tip: Felix (8) “After visiting the Toy Museum, I went with mum and dad to the Grote Markt. I couldn’t believe my eyes! The whole square had been turned into a beach, which was brilliant because I could build sandcastles! My mum and dad also made new friends while they were sitting there. They told my mum that next year the Play Day on May 24th 2015 will be the tenth edition. The theme is ‘Celebrating’. We’ll be able to play on all the squares. I’ll definitely be there!” Speeldag, 24/05/2015

Toy Museum To enter the Toy Museum is to feast your eyes on one of the largest toy collections in Europe. It boasts toys from all over the world, past and present. But a visit to the museum is more than just looking. For example, you can try your hand at knucklebones or spin a top. Children are in their element here and you’ll be catapulted back to your own childhood!

8

gree tings from Mechelen

Planckendael Planckendael is so much more than ‘just’ an animal park. It takes the family on an adventure across the five continents of the world. Suddenly you find yourself face to face with a whopping great lion or surrounded by penguins. And before you know it, the children are dashing from one suspension bridge or one treetop to another and hanging there like monkeys! They’ll certainly have a few enthusiastic tales to tell afterwards!

Technopolis Technopolis is an activity centre for science and technology where you can land a plane, take a nap on a bed of nails, ride a bicycle along a high wire five metres above the ground, and much more besides. The 350 plus interactive displays introduce children to the technology behind ordinary everyday objects and they discover for themselves how things work. But adults will also have a field day experimenting... and learn a lot at the same time!

Fresh air and family fun

Letting off steam The city of Mechelen and the area roundabout have no shortage of parks and green spaces. There’s more than enough space to run around and play in the Botanical Garden and Vrijbroek Park – to name just two. A visit to the children’s farm in Tivoli park is also worthwhile, particularly when rounded off with a pancake treat in the castle restaurant! Those looking for action will have the time of their lives at the De Nekker sports and leisure centre on the outskirts, where a beach, swimming pool, playgrounds and sports fields await.

10

gree tings from Mechelen

The verdant outskirts also have plenty to offer the whole family

Tip: Ella (12) “I loved climbing St Rumbold’s Tower, but best of all was the city trail. As we made our way along the narrow streets trying to solve the questions, we came across various play features. For example, near the Culture Centre we found wooden puppets and a little further along we had fun dodging the spray on the Dyle Path. The weather was hot so it was lovely!”

Vibr ant Mechelen

Mechelen rocks!

Hip cafés, novel boutiques, on-trend design shops... even a bicycle bar for the sporty!

tip: Hanne (28) “On driving into Mechelen I noticed a huge wall painting. A local told me that it was an artwork by city artist Gijs Vanhee and directed us to an art project in the city centre where local, Belgian and foreign graffiti artists transform bare walls into colourful works of art, like this giant pelican in the Lange Schipstraat by Dzia.” www.mechelenmuurt.be

Vibrant Mechelen The Vismarkt is where Mechelaars chill out. So take the weight off your feet at one of the many street cafés and enjoy a spot of people-watching! They’ll be on their way to the exciting design shops and hip coffee bars in Onze-Lieve-Vrouwstraat or the Haverwerf, where the Lamot Conference and Heritage Centre is another draw. And if you’re feeling peckish, there’s no shortage of colourful little restaurants in the area.

12

Mechelen suits you! In Mechelen window-shopping is a real pleasure. De Bruul, IJzerenleen and Onze-Lieve-Vrouwestraat form a vibrant triangle of large chains, mini-boutiques and speciality shops – in fact, an embarras de choix and everything within hand’s reach. Retro style, designer labels, novel gifts: something for everyone. Mechelen suits you!

Active enjoyment

From the heart of our city you can walk or cycle into the verdant countryside

Fancy introducing a breath of fresh air into your city visit? Then hop on your bike or put on your walking shoes. With its rivers and lovely lakes hugging the picturesque city, Mechelen combines the best of both worlds. Enjoy the parkland and wildlife areas in and around the centre, or head for the verdant outskirts of Mechelen. The amazing Vrijbroek Park and the Mechels Broek – Mechelen marshland – will keep you happy for hours.

Blue-green belt!

tip: Karel (36) “Sitting still or wandering around is not for me, so the stand-up paddle-boarding formula was ideal. A few friends and I paddled our along the Dyle on surf planks. Half-way along the route we stopped off at the Vismarkt for an aperitif: it was blissful! Our women are off shopping soon so I’m planning to give the City Golf a go with a few friends. Knocking a ball around in the shadow of St Rumbold’s Cathedral? Sounds good to me!”

tip: Veerle (40) “Now that our children are a bit older, they can easily join us on our bicycle rides. The Golden Charles Route leads through the city’s blue-green outskirts to some truly charming spots. The Three Rivers Point, where the Rupel, Nete and Dyle converge, is well worth seeing. And there are lots of cafés along the route serving a very welcome Gouden Carolus beer.”

On and alongside the water Explore Mechelen from the water. The floating Dyle Path leads past charming waterside houses. Try the ‘walking on water’ experience one evening when the city is lit up and the river is at its most beautiful. Or sit back and relax on a boat trip on the Inner Dyle.

Tr adition & Talent

Marvel at the colourful tapestries at De Wit Royal Manufacturers and put our beers to the taste test

tip: Suzan (55) “We were walking round the Large Beguinage. When we came to the Beguinage Church, we noticed a whiff of hops in the air. So we turned into Krankenstraat and followed our noses to the end of the street. We found ourselves at the entrance to Het Anker brewery.”

Het Anker Located on the edge of the Large Beguinage is the authentic city brewery, Het Anker, whose Gouden Carolus beer has won several awards. Try it and you’ll understand why! Het Anker is one of the oldest breweries in the country: Charles V’s favourite tipple was the ‘Mechelsen Bruynen’. And as a memento of your visit, why not take home a bottle of its home-distilled Gouden Carolus single malt whisky.

De Wit Don’t miss the prestigious De Wit Royal Manufacturers of Tapestry, which houses an exceptionally beautiful collection. For four generations antique tapestries have been cleaned and repaired at this world-famous address. On Saturday mornings the Manufacturer opens its doors to visitors - the chance to take a look inside the workshop, admire old and modern tapestries and watch a weaving demonstration.

The Taste of Mechelen

Mechelen boasts many local products

With each bite you taste the art and the craftsmanship behind them

tip: Pieter (34), Lore (33), Titus (7) & Lotte (5) “When we have visitors from abroad we always take them to the centre to try a local speciality. We usually start with a soup of fresh local vegetables followed, of course, by our native-chicken dish, Mechelse Koekoek. All our guests love the sauce made with Gouden Carolus. And the chocolate Mechelen moons and the beer pralines make the perfect dessert!”

Beer in women’s hands Never say that beer is a man’s drink! Even Margaret of Austria was partial to a ‘Mechelse Bruynen’. For more than three centuries Mechelen’s beguines – women who did not, could not or did not want to enter a convent – were in charge of the brewery in the Large Beguinage. And with thirty percent more taste buds than men, women are even the ideal beer tasters! Those who think that the Mechelaars snack on nuts with their beer are mistaken. Here in Mechelen our Gouden Carolus beers are served in style.

Flavours of Mechelen Mechelen has scores of culinary attractions to its name. This makes it a foodie’s paradise. Several ‘institutions’ in the city centre have been producing specialities for more than three generations: from the remarkable selection of cheeses at Schockaert cheese shop to the typical tower biscuits at Matthys’ bakery.

The Thalys high-speed train whooses me from Rotterdam Central Station to Belgium, giving me just enough time to quickly check my emails and run through my presentation.

To work! Our meeting room affords a wonderful view of the city. My presentation was flawless thanks to the state-of-the-art equipment.

My hotel is just 100 meters from the conference centre. I have an hour to check in, shower and change.

After a hearty breakfast in the hotel, a corporate visit is on the programme. It’s enlightening to see the company for real.

The afternoon session is fascinating too. And what an incredible invention, the Twitter wall!

I have a good feeling about the conference as it draws to a close. I’ve learned a lot and made new contacts. Now a quick dash to the shops. I can just squeeze a box of chocolate moons for my wife into my suitcase and football shirts for the boys.

My first impression of Mechelen and its conference centre is positive. The welcome cup of coffee does me a power of good and my Flemish counterparts greet me warmly.

Those contacts come in useful during the game of City Golf in the city centre. Great to have the opportunity to explore some of the city’s historical highlights and green spaces.

My choice in the brasserie is a no-brainer – I go for the Gouden Carolus menu! The beer-flavoured Flemish stew is de-licious.

Brussels, our capital, less than twenty minutes away on the train, is a city that knows how to please and amaze. It owes its cosmopolitan nature to its position as capital of Europe, but is known for much more: its rich heritage, the creative atmosphere, the gold on the pediments of the Grand Place, the Art Nouveau features in the streets, René Magritte and the famous cartoon characters that adorn its walls. In Brussels, the key word is paradox: designers use the oldest neighbourhoods to bring out the very latest, and its most famous resident is three feet tall and answers to the name of Manneken Pis. www.visitbrussels.be

Antwerp is a city with many names and even more faces: the city of Rubens, world diamond centre, hub of the international fashion scene, city on the river and a major player in the culinary world. As such, Antwerp is a hot spot for a variety of visitors: a vibrant centre of creativity for designers and fashionistas, frivolous and trendy for young people and LGBTs, a permanent fixture for culture vultures, a city on the river for river cruisers. If you travel by car or public transport, Antwerp is just a hop and a skip from Mechelen. Cyclists should take the cycle path which takes them to the city on the Scheldt quickly, safely and comfortably. www.visitantwerpen.be

Stroll through the historic city and immerse yourself in Bruges’ history. Bruges is cultural, artistic, cosmopolitan, mysterious and mediaeval. Flemish Primitives, such as Jan van Eyck and Hans Memling found their creative niche in the West Flemish town. Even today, their world renowned works and collections can be viewed in one of the many museums. But there’s more: the cultural centres offer a wide range of performances and various events render the city in raptures all year round. Besides culture and history, you are bound to discover the pleasures of the good life in the authentic pubs, cosy eateries, trendy lunch spots or even gourmet restaurants. In Bruges, the surprises are just around the corner. www.visitbruges.be

If you travel from Mechelen to Bruges, then you should definitely stop half-way in Ghent, a city steeped in history, but at the same time a buzzing cultural mecca boasting modern city life. Ghent’s assets are the Lam Gods, the Light Plan and the Light Festival, Ghent Festival and Europe’s largest range of veggie food. Its history, art, beautiful architecture, water and joie de vivre are bound to win you over. Moreover, the city is pulling out all the stops to please its visitors, including the thousands of students who inject youthfulness into the city every academic year. That is how you can discover Ghent ‘differently’ with the Concrete Canvas Tour, the cycling or walking tours along the city’s graffiti. www.visitgent.be

At a cultural, historic and gastronomic level, Leuven can offer a wide range of possibilities. From culinary delights to the Gothic Town Hall, from the delicious Leuven beer and student atmosphere on the old market square to the sleek, contemporary architecture of M – Museum Leuven: Leuven is a sparkling city where authenticity still means something. You can do your shopping in the many fine boutiques, stroll along the atmospheric streets and squares, and relax in the green idyllic oases of the city. You can get to Leuven from Mechelen by car or public transport in no time at all. Or hop on the bike and take a nice trip along the Leuven-Dyle canal. www.visitleuven.be

Hanswijk Procession

29 August – 8 November 2015

10 May 2015

The Biennial is an exciting, yet relaxing way to discover international contemporary art. Nicola Setari, the Italian curator based in Brussels, is responsible for the artistic direction of the Biennial. Contemporary art at international level, moving images in different shapes and special locations: that sums up CONTOUR 7. www.contour7.be

De Zomer Is Van Mechelen June – August 2015

Come to Mechelen for the country’s longest festival summer! For two months, the centre of Mechelen is dedicated to music, socialising and relaxing. At the end of June, there is the world festival Ottertrotter, where established names and up-and-coming talent share the stage of Parkpop, and with M.E.C., there is also a pop-up event site. We close off the festival summer in style during Maanrock, Belgium’s largest free city festival. The summer belongs to Mechelen! www.dezomerisvanmechelen.be

Feel like coming to Mechelen? In group, with your family or friends? Start your city trip by visiting www.visitmechelen.be in Mechelen

For the people from Mechelen, the Hanswijk procession is a traditional event. Ever since 1273, the miraculous statue of Our Lady of Hanswijk is paraded through the old town every year in May. It is an authentic and colourful spectacle with a mix of folk, traditional, historical and religious scenes. An impressive feat pulled off by the hundreds of actors and extras! www.hanswijkprocessie.be
