Marketing Plan All the Light We Cannot See Hardcover; US $27.00 / CAN $32.50 Ship date: April 15, 2016 Pub date: May 6, 2016 Publicist: Megan Doyle Pre-pub Blurbs • “This jewel of a story is put together like a vintage timepiece, its many threads coming together so perfectly. Doerr’s writing and imagery are stunning. It’s been a while since a novel had me under its spell in this fashion.” —Abraham Verghese, author of Cutting for Stone • “Doerr sees the world as a scientist, but feels it as a poet. He knows about everything—radios, diamonds, mollusks, birds, flowers, locks, guns—but he also writes a line so beautiful, creates an image or scene so haunting, it makes you think forever differently about the big things—love, fear, cruelty, kindness, the countless facets of the human heart. Wildly suspenseful, structurally daring, rich in detail and soul, Doerr’s new novel is that novel, the one you savor, and ponder, and happily lose sleep over, then go around urging all your friends to read—now.” —J. R. Moehringer, author of Sutton and The Tender Bar • “All the Light We Cannot See is a dazzling, epic work of fiction. Anthony Doerr writes beautifully about the mythic and the intimate, about snails on beaches and armies on the move, about fate and love and history and those breathless, unbearable moments when they all come crashing together.” —Jess Walter, author of Beautiful Ruins • “A tender exploration of this world’s paradoxes: the beauty of the laws of nature and the terrible ends to which war subverts them, the frailty and the resilience of the human heart, the immutability of a moment and the healing power of time. The language is as expertly crafted as the master locksmith’s models in the story, and the settings as intricately evoked. A compelling and uplifting novel.” —M. L. Award-winning author Anthony Doerr weaves together an intricate story in All the Light We Cannot See with the intertwined narratives of a French girl and a German boy as they grow up all too quickly amid the advent and spread of World War II. Marie-Laure practically grows up in the Museum of Natural History in Paris. The scientists and curators there teach her about marine biology and geology and foster her natural curiosity and adventurousness. Doerr’s masterful writing creates Marie-Laure’s world filled with rich detail using the sounds and smells and emotions around her, from the perspective of someone who is blind. Werner and his little sister grow up in an orphanage in a German mining town, but when he discovers a broken radio and restores it, illegal foreign broadcasts introduce him to a wide world of science, technology, and music. As Werner has to enlist in the Nazi army, Doerr’s humanist message about the cruelties of war demonstrate that there are two sides to every story. Doerr’s lyrical prose and compelling characters work together to create a story that is both immersive and heartbreaking. He has a reputation as a soulful and cerebral writer, but the themes that permeate this novel—coming of age, family, danger, and loss—grab a much more popular audience.

Pitch Letter “Anthony Doerr sees the world as a scientist, but feels it as a poet . . . Wildly suspenseful, structurally daring, rich in detail and soul, Doerr’s new novel is that novel, the one you savor, and ponder, and happily lose sleep over, then go around urging all your friends to read—now.” —J. R. Moehringer, author of The Tender Bar Dear Journalist, It has been seventy-seven years since the beginning of World War II, and the time period still holds lovers of history and fiction enthralled. Marie-Laure is the blind French girl who has a natural sense of curiosity and a love of sea creatures. Werner is the impoverished German boy who has a knack for radio equipment and a desire to rise above his circumstances. ALL THE LIGHT WE CANNOT SEE follows the perspectives of these two young people as they grow up all too quickly amid the advent and spread of World War II. Doerr weaves together a story that is both heartbreaking and hopeful. He brings MarieLaure’s world to life by filling it with rich detail using the sounds and smells and emotions around her. As Werner is forced to enlist in the Nazi army, Doerr’s humanist message about the cruelties of war demonstrates that there are two sides to every story. As part of an interview, Doerr can discuss: • His travels through Europe and how a visit to the French seaside town of Saint-Malo became the inspiration for the book. • The magic of radio technology and how reflecting on modern cellphone technology inspired imagery of World War II-era radio equipment. • How achieving award-winning work has opened up opportunities to explore his own literary possibilities: the Rome Prize and his memoir, Four Seasons in Rome. • The hindsight of looking back on World War II versus how people lived through it. • The intersection between short fiction and long fiction. Anthony Doerr, author of the critically acclaimed books The Shell Collector, About Grace, and Memory Wall, has created the latest addition to the war novel canon that will eclipse his previous achievements. Doerr has a reputation as a soulful and cerebral writer, but the themes that permeate this novel—coming of age, family, danger, and loss—make ALL THE LIGHT WE CANNOT SEE a must-read for everyone. I urge you to schedule cover this spring, and I will call soon to follow up. Sincerely, Megan Doyle, (817) 123-4567, megan.doyle@publisheremail.com
